Hand-in- where? The assignment should be uploaded to the canvas

Pass mark 40%

Method of retrieval Re-sit a similar coursework

Feedback Given in the form of comments on the script

Collection of marked work Final marks will be entered into e-vision.

Learning outcomes:
LO1 .Identify the applicability of different mathematics to relevant engineering problems
LO2 Apply a range of mathematical tools appropriate to engineering systems and processes.
LO4 Use appropriate computer software to solve mathematical problems
Please note that this is an individual assignment. Collusion will be treated as academic
misconduct.
Use MS EXCEL where necessary to show your workings/graphs for the solutions. All
illustrations and details should be given in a report format prepared using MS WORD. In
addition EXCEL sheet tables should be given in the report where necessary.

Error analysis of Numerical Integration

1.i) Estimate the following integral correct up to 6 decimal places using,

a) Trapezoidal rule

b) Mid-ordinate rule

c) Simpson’s rule

considering 2,4 and 8 intervals for each method.

𝑦 = ∫ 6𝑥 5 𝑑𝑥 (9 marks)
0

(4 marks)
ii) Find the solution of the above problem using integration (analytical method)

iii) Calculate the absolute error for each of the estimates. (9 marks)

iv) Show that the error of trapezoidal and mid-ordinate rule is proportional to 𝑑 2 (18 marks)

( 𝑑 = 𝑤𝑖𝑑𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑎𝑙) and error of Simpson’s rule is proportional to 𝑑 4 .
