Transmission Oil Cooler

Remove & Install Transmission Oil Cooler
Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection,
maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid
with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and
supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of fluids
according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Drain the coolant from the transmission oil cooler into a suitable container for storage or
disposal.
2. Remove six bolts (1) and six bolts (5).

3. Remove oil cooler bonnet (2), the gaskets and the seal on the adapter.
4. Remove four bolts (3), remove tube assembly (4) and the O-ring seals.
5. Attach a strap and a suitable lifting device to the transmission oil cooler. Remove six
bolts (7) and remove transmission oil cooler (6) and the gasket. The weight of the
transmission oil cooler is approximately 34 kg (75 lb).
6. Carefully clean the tube bundles in the transmission oil cooler with a 3.2 mm (.12 in)
diameter rod.
NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the transmission oil cooler.
NOTE: Check all the gaskets and seals for wear or damage and replace with new parts if
necessary.
7. Attach a strap and a suitable lifting device to the transmission oil cooler. The weight of
the transmission oil cooler is approximately 34 kg (75 lb). Put transmission oil cooler (6) in
position and install the gasket and six bolts (7).
8. Install the seal on the adapter of oil cooler bonnet (2) and put the oil cooler bonnet and
the gaskets in place. Lubricate the bore and seal lightly with glycerin.
9. Install six bolts (1) and six bolts (5).
10. Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 55 ± 7 N·m (40 ± 5 lb ft).
11. Install tube assembly (4), the O-ring seals and four bolts (3).
12. Fill the engine with coolant to the correct level. See the Operation & Maintenance
Module.
