Peripherals
1. Identify the peripherals in this computer application. Devide the into input and ouput device.
Input: Barcode , keyboard
Output : Monitor

2. Link the inputs on the left anda the outputs on the right with the appropriate peripherals in the
centre

3. Study this description and answer these questions.

 How do digital cameras differ from conventional cameras?
 The memory card of digital cameras is not a film
 Digital cameras have an LCD on the back for playback
 Photos from the digital cameras can be downloaded to the PC for retouching,
manipulating, or printing out.
 How do they work?
The conventional camera uses film to store the image. A digital camera captures the
image with CCD and stores it on a memory card.
 What are their advantages and disadvantages compared to conventional cameras?
Advantages :
• Digital cameras don’t need to buy film.
• Instant viewing of pictures
• No delay waiting for the film to be developed
Disadvantages :
• The price is expensive
• Digital cameras consume a lot of power

Disadvantages of conventional camera
 Cannot transfer photos easily to PC
 High prices for photo printing
 Cannot delete the portrait
 Requires chemical processing
6. Now listen to both parts again to find the answers to
these questions:
 What does a CCD contain?
For the pixel in images.
 What is a pixel?
Some dots of the picture or image on the screen, or the smallest addressable element in
an all points addressable display device.
 How can you view pictures before they are downloaded to a PC?
You can play back the image on the small LCD screen on the back of the camera
 When you have downloaded the images, what can you do with them?
we can save it in-camera memory.
 Is special software required?
yes, it’s coming from the camera.
 Why is the resolution important?
because a higher resolution will produce better photos.
 What does the capacity of a digital camera depend on?
Flash Card
 Why is it worth getting a rechargeable battery?
Because the camera digital is wasteful of battery.
A. Find the answers to these questions in the following text.
1. Name some types of devices that use ‘computers on a chip’.
Computers on a chip are used in medical equipment, home appliances, cars, and toys.
2. What uses of handheld computers are mentioned in the text?
Workers use handheld computing devices to collect data at a customer site, generate
forms, control inventory, and serve as desktop organizers.
3. What are the benefits of using computers with the following items?
a. Security systems
Computers in security systems result in safer environments.
b. Cars
Computers in cars improve energy efficiency.
c. Phones
Computers in phones provide features such as call forwarding, call monitoring, and
call answering.
4. What smart devices are mentioned in the text?
These smart devices are designed to take over some of the basic tasks previously
performed by people.
5. What are smart cards used for?
Smart cards store vital information such as health records, driver's licenses, bank
balances, and so on.
6. What are the advantages of multimedia?
Multimedia systems are known for their educational and entertainment value, which we
call edutainment. Multimedia combines text with sound, video, animation, and graphics,
which greatly enhances the interaction between user and machine and can make
information more interesting and appealing to people.
7. What can medical expert systems do?
Medical expert systems can help doctors pinpoint a patient’s illness, suggest further
tests, and prescribe appropriate drugs.
8. How can computers help the disabled?
Connectivity enables computers and software that might otherwise be incompatible to
communicate and to share resources. Now that computers are proliferating in many
areas and networks are available for people to access data and communicate with
others. With the proper tools, hospital staff can get a diagnosis from a medical expert
hundreds or thousands of miles away. Similarly, the disabled can communicate more
effectively with others using computers.
9. What types of computing systems are made available to people in remote locations
using electronic classrooms or boardrooms?
Distance learning and videoconferencing are concepts made possible with the use of an
electronic classroom or boardroom accessible to people in remote locations. Fast
databases of information are currently available to users of the internet, all of whom
can send mail messages to each other.
10. What aspects of computing can people power determine?
People power is critical to ensuring that hardware, software, and connectivity are
effectively integrated in a socially responsible way. People-computer users and
computer professionals-are the ones who will decide which hardware, software, and
networks endure and how great an impact they will have on our lives. Ultimately
people's power must be exercised to ensure that computers are used not only efficiently
but in a socially responsible way.
