Class A Power Amplifier (MOSFET)
AIM:
To construct the MOSFET Class A power amplifier circuit by using LTspice
software and verify its Transient response curve and match the theoretical and Practical
frequency.
APPARATUS REQUIRED:
LTSPICE Software
Personal Computer
Si.No Name of the Component / Specification / Range Quantity
Equipment
1. Resistors 20ohm-490ohm 5
2. Capacitor 0.01u-100u 4
3. Voltage source V1-ACvoltage,V2-20V 2
4. Grounding
5. Connecting wires
6. MOSFET BSS123 1
THEORY:
Working principle:The Class A amplifier is the simplest form of power
amplifier that uses a single switching transistor in the standard common emitter
circuit configuration as seen previously to produce an inverted output. The
transistor is always biased “ON” so that it conducts during one complete cycle of
the input signal waveform producing minimum distortion and maximum
amplitude of the output signal.
Advantage :
It has high fidelity because of the output exact replica of an input signal.
It has improved high-frequency response because the active device is ON full
time, i.e. no time is required to turn on the device.
There is no crossover distortion because the active device conducts for the entire
cycle of the input signal.
The single ended configuration can be easily & practically realized in class A
amp.
Disadvantage :
Due to the large power supply and heat sink, class A amplifier is costly
and bulky.
It has Poor Efficiency.
Due to the transformer coupling frequency response is not as good.
Application:
The Class A Amplifier more suitable for outdoor musical systems, since
the transistor reproduces the entire audio waveform without ever cutting
off. As a result, the sound is very clear and more linear, that is, it
contains much lower levels of distortion.
They are usually very large, heavy and they produce nearly 4-5 watts of
heat energy per a watt of output. Therefore, they run very hot and need
lots of ventilation. So they are not at all ideal for a car and rarely
acceptable in a home.
Design:
Determine the Frequency and compare the Theoretical and Practical frequency
Design RC p amplifier for the following values
VCC=12,IE=28 mA, Kn=1,RD=120
VDD=20V
VDS=VDD - ID × RD
VDS= 20-(28×10-3)×(120)
VDS= 16.64
VDS(sat)=VGS - VTN
VDS(sat)= 20 - (1)×(120)VDS2(sat)
VDS(sat) = 0.404 V
PL=0.287W
PS=1.82W
η=PL/PS
η= (0.287/1.82)×100
η= 15.769%
VDSQ=(VDS+VDS(sat))/2
VDSQ=(16.64+0.404)/2
VDSQ= 8.702V
VR=(VDS - VDS(sat))/2
VR = 8.3V
PROCEDURE:
Step 1 : Open the LT spice and using the draft create the Class A amplifier using mosfet.
Step 2:After construction of the circuit set simulation as transient 10ms(.tran 10ms)
Step 3: When we do this and run we will get the output graph window when we touch at
output end(Vout).
Step 4: Set the ac analysis .ac(dec 10ms 1 1000meg).
Step 5: We will get the frequency response graph from which we can find the bandwidth.
