HR English Reading Practice Sheet 9-11-2020 Prepared by: Abu Malik

Read the following short paragraph, and study the summary given carefully to understand the
core points.
Managing Meetings as a Supervisor
How employees view their supervisor is to a great extent determined by how he or she conducts
meetings. A supervisor is judged not only by the content, goal setting, or results of the meetings. More
important are the supervisor’s “soft skills”: the ability to encourage, empower, and motivate his or her
employees with the right phrases that encourage them to buy into their supervisor’s agenda, needs, and
goals. In other words, meetings are where supervisors create productive teams that make their jobs
easier.

 The way a supervisor conducts a meeting affects the opinion employees have of him.
 A supervisor’s way of conducting meetings is not the only factor that determines employees’
opinion of him – but it’s an important factor.
 Other factors that employees depend on to judge the success or failure of a supervisor in
fulfilling his role are: the content of meetings, the goal setting process or procedure
applied/adopted by the supervisor, and the results or outcomes of the meetings he presides over.
 The most important element in determining how employees judge their supervisor is what soft
skills he possesses.
 Examples of soft skills mentioned in the paragraph:
- the ability to encourage/ the ability to empower/ the ability to encourage/ the ability to
motivate employees …etc.
 The main task/responsibility of a supervisor is to create a productive team whenever he
conducts a meeting with his employees.
 Soft skills have a big value because they help create productive employees when they are
applied properly by supervisors.
 A supervisor can persuade employees to accept and support his agenda, needs and goals by
using the right phrases (meaning the right language) at meetings.
 Supervisors should come to meetings with clear agenda, needs, and goals on hand
so that those meetings can produce positive results.
