ABSTRACT
The main purpose of my research paper is to find out “The Most Trending Makeup Brand Sold
on Online Shops in Bangladesh” and discuss the impacts of branded makeup products and talk
about the roles it plays in every woman’s life as well as all the makeup artists. As we all know
that electronic business has grown a lot in Bangladesh as people are dependent on technological
gadgets, thus the online service sector is growing day by day. The attitude towards brands in
terms of beauty and personal care has increased a lot than before as the Bangladeshi consumers’
have become more knowledgeable about the global brands and are more demanding now which
clearly means the beauty industry has got a lot of opportunities and is one of the booming
industries of Bangladesh. Mahmud (2019) described in his reports that “the beauty industry is
currently estimated at 3.2 billion dollars.” (para.1).The access of internet has been an endowment
for us because the advancement of internet through smart-phones has caused a dramatic rise in
electronic shopping in the beauty industry. According to Mahmud (2019) “It has been estimated
by the BTRC, data in September 2019, that 95 million of Bangladeshis have got the easy access
to the internet through their smart-phones and their fingertips are pushing the beauty industry to
rise continually in our country.” (para.4) However, the middle to affluent class of Bangladeshi
population has been contributing significantly in the growth of beauty industry as their
purchasing power is improving. Furthermore, talking about the most trending brands in
Bangladesh that are sold on online shops are the brands that have established few years back and
have become much popular in terms of their specific products. The attitude of customers tends to
change a lot through the trends, product’s quality, pricing and its brand image or goodwill. The
product’s attributes as well as its feedbacks must meet the consumer’s expectations and
satisfaction which will influence the consumer to increase the purchasing activity. Makeup
products with medium end to high end brand has high importance to women and even men today
as it helps to boost up self confidence which every person needs. Makeup is such a tool in our
society that enhances a person’s appearance and beauty and help women to embrace their natural
features. However, using a brand has become necessary in our society as it is said that the
makeup should look natural which means the products must be well pigmented and should blend
well. Brands do matter a lot nowadays. Kestenbaum (2017) reported that the president and CEO
of Shiseido Americas, Marc Rey described “his implication about the growth rate of independent
brands was a reflection of a change in consumer tastes that everyone in the business has to
respond to” (para.4).

INTRODUCTION:
The trending sector of Bangladesh based on technology is online shopping services. The online
stores make lives trouble free and also shopping online is just done by one click while you sit at
your home, so it is technically less time consuming. Morgan (2019) explained, “To keep
customers engaged in what is a highly competitive market, brands are using new forms of
emerging technology to personalize products and services.” We all know how much girls are
passionate about makeup and they feel the necessity for it. Nowadays, most of the girls and
women spend a whole lot of time browsing online looking for their favorite brands. Many of the
online stores such as Banglashoppers.com, The Mallbd.com, Afsheenbd, Lavishta, and
Shopaholic etc. in Bangladesh these online shops import branded makeup products from
different parts of the world. Some of these are E-commerce businesss and at the same time have
physical stores and some operate through Facebook pages. However, I feel the beauty and
cosmetics industry has grown a lot than before. Moreover, the attitude towards branded makeup
products has escalated a lot as women are much more fascinated towards makeup products. As
far as my hypothesis, I believe Huda Beauty Cosmetics, Jeffree star cosmetics, ColourPop
cosmetics, Morphe, ABH cosmetics and Ardell are the most popular makeup brands that are sold
online.
The focus of my research will be to find out what the impacts and the experience of using
branded makeup products and what role it plays in a women’s life. I would like to know why
women are so fascinated towards eye palettes that too branded. Is brand an essential requirement
for every woman before they use cosmetic products? I want to know what benefits they gain and
the after effects of using makeup. Would it really make a difference if they do not use branded
cosmetics? Is it just women using makeup products or are there boys who also use makeup?
Hopefully through my research I expect to find my answers to such questions.

BACKGROUND:
As for my secondary research, I have found from sources that all these brands Huda Beauty,
Morphe, ABH, ColourPop, Jeffree Star and Ardell are not trending in Bangladesh but some of
them are very popular in terms of their specific products and are mostly sold on online. Firstly,
talking about Ardell- the brand itself is very well known for its false lashes. Carhart (2020) has
reported, “It has been a go-to source for false lashes for makeup artists, editors, and beauty
fanatics alike since 1971. The company has more than 200 different types of lashes ranging from
natural to extraordinary, but the Demi Wispies Fake Eyelashes are the best.” It is lightweight,
clear flexible band, easy to apply and remove, reusable and comes in the price of $8.91, but have
to buy lash glue separately. On the other side, Huda beauty’s classic false lashes are incredibly
celebrity favorite. Moreover, the company first became an overnight success thanks to the
popularity of its false eyelashes. Also, the false lashes are vegan and cruelty-free, durable,
reusable up to 15 times, but the lashes are pretty expensive- comes in $20 and lash glue sold
separately. However, nowadays eye palettes are pretty much in demand and people spend
thousands of money to get that perfect pigment to create beautiful eye-look. Weiss (2019)
explained in the article that Star notes that Jeffree Star Cosmetics (JSC) broke a record with 1
million total eye-shadow palettes sold — including the flagship Conspiracy Palette as well as a
smaller Mini-Controversy Palette — in roughly 30 minutes. On the other side, Jeffre Star Velour
liquid lipsticks have been performing amazing. As per a blog by Junkee (2016) reports that “the
lipsticks are cruelty free, gives a non drying finish, has a great quality in general, the texture and
it’s long lasting pretty much the entire day with minimal retouching.” Despite of its wonderful
performance, packaging, quality, fragnance and stay of power, however these velour liquid
lipsticks are so demanding that it’s not always available, thus resulting they retail a bit high in
price. Not just Jeffree Star cosmetics but Morphe has been doing great and most of the makeup
artist, bloggers or influencers have been reviewing eye palettes of MORPHE. (Team, 2017)
noted that 15N Night Master and Morphe 15D Day Slayer Eyeshadow Palettes costing $15 each
have stepped out amazingly. Morphe’s has worked more in these palettes on textures and
packaging and are worth all your money and tagging it as “Best Value.”(para. 3) However, the
most playful was tagged to Anastasia Prism Eyeshadow Palette costing $42. In the blog, HB
Team says that palette has creamy matte shades as well as gorgeous shimmers by which classic
and exciting eye looks can be created. According to Krause (2019), Morphe provides major sale
on influencer’s collaboration palettes and brushes. Now this Morphe an advantage as their
collaborations with biggest influencers like James Charles and Jeffree Star and Jacklyn Hill were
the most hit palettes. Also, these discount bundles are offered customers cannot hold themselves
back from purchasing these. Moreover, Morphe eyeshadow palettes are a game-changer when it
comes to high-quality, creamy textures that give you the most worth for your buck. However,
Jowett and Reid (2020) noted that with James Charles x Morphe Unleash Your Inner Artist
Palette. It's packed with 39 super-pigmented, rainbow-inspired hues, in both creamy matte and
glossy metallic finishes. You can create endless looks with this multi-coloured palette, from an

emerald smokey-eye to a wash of neon pink, it covers all bases. Culliney (2019) reported
“ColourPop is quickly becoming the beauty brand to beat,” Cherry Pick wrote in his report.
ColourPop offers a wide array of products at budget friendly prices and eye-shadow palettes that
provide more bang than their buck. The brand’s trending products in Cherry Pick’s analysis were
its lux liquid lip, crème lux lipsticks, and midnight masquerade palette. When talking about a
new ColourPop collection, we can never miss out on those gorgeous eye-shadow palettes they
produce. Yin (2019) noted Lilac-Like You a Lot is possibly ColourPop's dreamiest palette yet!?
Featuring buttery matte shadows and eye-catching glittery metallics, this palette can help you
transition from day to night effortlessly. If you're looking for go-to palette, it's worth considering
at a neutral colour spectrum. According to Jowett and Reid (2020), “A great option would
be Huda Beauty's NUDE Obsession eye-shadows.” On the other side, Basu (2020) reported in
his article that Huda Beauty’s Rose Gold Remastered, Desert Dusk Eyeshadow Palette
and Smokey Obsessions are the best three palettes of this brand. Moreover, he mentioned the
best three lipstick collection as well such as Nude Love Collection, Contour & Strobe Lip Set
and Demi Matte Cream Lipstick. Abelman (2019) reported, “As Anastasia Beverly Hills' biggest
palette yet, the Norvina Vol. 1 Palette balances a bevy of bolds with numerous neutrals, so you
can easily experiment or resort to your signature look depending on the day. Allure editors have
quickly fallen in love with E4,” and it retails at $60. As with all the Anastasia Beverly Hills eye-
shadow palettes, the quality is impeccable, therefore it is a worthy investment for your makeup
collection. Garner (2016) argued in his blog that despite of how ABH is well reputed as a brand
for its eyebrow pomade, however the liquid lipsticks are often the most sold products. “It’s a
liquid lipstick, with a high pigmentation and opacity, and gives a complete matte finish. There
are 32 colors in the range and the price is $20.” Formulas (2017) reveal in the blog that Huda
Beauty is the best liquid lipstick saying that-“HB has probably the 'truest' matte finish liquid
lipstick formula to make it into the favorite portion of this post. The consistency of this is very
fluid but the color is still completely opaque. It's incredibly long-wearing, though when it does
begin to fade, it can give that 'lip liner' effect. Even though it doesn’t have creamy feel but it
doesn’t leave on any dry patches on my lips. Moreover, Jasmine’s blog also reviews ColorPop
Ultra satin lips to be the third best.
On the other hand, ("Cosmetics Business forecasts 5 Global Beauty Trends of 2020 in new
report", 2019) says that the top performing brands of 2019 are Huda Beauty and Anastasia
Beverly Hills.
After doing my secondary research thoroughly, I got some answers of my questions that i
mentioned in the last paragraph of introduction part. According to Smith (2014), the effects of
makeup on society today is that teenagers have such low esteem that they are striving to look like
what society and unrealistic ads are telling them, getting influenced by social media. Since the
1990s, the makeup and beauty industry has been creating and till now the brands has been
dramatically growing. Somehow, the teenagers are so instigated that they believe if they do not
purchase the latest makeup products then they won’t be accepted in the society. However, we

now know that using brands make a real difference to all the MUA and makeup fascinated
women out there. Applying makeup boosts their confidence and self esteem. As for about men
using makeup then most of the Bengali actors use makeup while they are shooting also
successful MUA like Zahid Khan have been doing pretty amazing as a male MUA in Bangladesh
because at the end of the day all that matters is the skill and expertise. Apparently, I discovered
two male teens practicing to be beauty bloggers named Mehedi Noor and Nahiyan Epu saying
that “every artist have something unique to inspire someone but James Charles is their
inspiration who highly inspired them to come in beauty community.” (personal-interview)

In my research I plan to investigate the compulsoriness of mental health education in colleges.

of eye palettes in Bangladesh?

HYPOTHESIS:
Online makeup shopping can be beneficial as well as non beneficial. As we are aware that
customers are also concerned about the product’s quality, brand and price while purchasing. The
factors that influence and attract most of the customers’ attitude are the branded cosmetics which
are imported from abroad. However, in this era, everyone tends to use branded cosmetics
whether it is high end or medium end products but the only requirement is that it must be
authentic, imported and branded. Brands like Hudabeauty, ColourPop, Jeffree Star, Morphe,
Anastasia Beverly Hills and Ardell are pretty much in demand and have the most trending
products like eye palettes, lipsticks, and lashes in the makeup industry in Bangladesh. They come
up with innovative makeup products every time. These brands have a lot of retained customers
since they have a brand name and they make sure to amaze and satisfy their customers by
providing sale, discount on special occasions and by not selling fake low quality products as we
all aware of the massive amount of fake cosmetic flood market in Dhaka. Hence, we are quite
dependent on branded products. Also, the websites of these brands are pretty handy to browse
through since it is very well-organized and segmented so it is not time consuming. On the other
hand, for customers who are not used to purchase cosmetics online might be hesitant so they go
the physical stores of Banglashopper.com, Shop Shajgoj and Lira Import but they might not find
some of the products available in physical stores which they can avail in online stores. But there
is no scope for customers to get worried as they have their physical stores so the customers can
go for testing in the store and finally buy the product. However, the only insignificant problem
could be that at some specific situations the delivery could be slow if you order directly from the
online stores like Afsheen, Shopaholic, and Lavishta. The eye palettes of Jeffree Star,
HudaBeauty, Morphe and Anastasia Beverly Hills are pretty much in demand as they are high
end brands whereas ColourPop cosmetics has unique and pigmented eye palettes and are also
high in demand for those who can afford branded palettes in less price. In addition to that
HudaBeauty and Jeffree Star Cosmetics are directly competitors for their very much trending
lipsticks also somewhat ABH plays a role in this competition. Somehow, sometimes you might
not avail your preferred branded products on online stores if it is out of stock. Nevertheless, I
strongly believe my hypothesis to be right by doing the primary research. I cannot imply the real
view of my hypothesis now as many will agree and some will disagree with my hypothesis.
However, I am highly curious to know what the people think about my hypothesis. Hence, I will
stand by my hypothesis.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:
By doing my primary research, I will carry out a survey of a representative sampling of the
students and other women who use makeup interview them who tend to use branded palettes in
their daily lives. According to my target audience I will prepare my questionnaire with diverse
types of questions to collect a range of useful data and information which will help me answer
my research questions.
As for my secondary research, I plan to take help from the Internet sources and use standard
search engines like Google.

The above pie charts indicate the information about the respondents of my survey. In figure 2,
the majority of the respondents of this survey were female which is 94% and. the male
respondents are 6%. Figure 1 shows the age of the respondents 79% were less than 18 years old,
15% were 18-24 years old, rest 3% each were 25-30 years and above 30 years old.

In response to my question, 37% of the respondents have claimed that HudaBeauty is the most
trending brand in terms of eye palette whereas, Morphe with 26%, ColourPop stands with 23%,
the least trending is Anastasia Beverly Hills with 14% and with no votes Jeffree Star turned out
to have no popularity between Bangladeshi makeup lovers.

In respose to my question, the respondents replied that 60% of the people prefer buying branded
makeup from online stores whereas 40% says they prefer the touch and checking the products in
person so they prefer physical stores.

The demand for branded eye palettes has drastically increased over the years. As we can see that
60% of the respondents claimed that they used branded palettes to create eye looks which is
definitely for that flawless pigmentation. However, 28% says they do not always use branded eye
palettes. Coming to the part where 6% of the respondents have mentioned they do not always use
and 6% voted maybe they use brands. Now these respondents do seem confused.

respondents with 17.14% prefers Huda Beauty palettes, with equal amount of vote of 14.29% for
ABH and Morphe and others with 8.6% says Makeup Revolution.

This graph explains how much girls and women of our country spends monthly on branded
cosmetics that they desire for. The majority of 43% respondents said that they spend Tk.700-
1900, the second highest showing 34% spends Tk.2000-4500, and there are 12% of people
purchasing products monthly tk.5000. Lastly, 11% doesn’t even spend tk.500 on branded
cosmetics.

products from Banglashoppers.com with 14.3%, Afsheen with 11.4% and The MallBD with
8.6% and so on the list goes.

However, as the respondents have claimed to be price sensitive so they have suggested their most
preferred online stores which sell branded cosmetics at the cheapest price. 8.6% of the
respondents suggested BD Budget Beauty, Carnesia with 8.6%, the Mall BD with 8.6% and
5.7% of the each 4 bars represents Lira Import, Shajgoj, Banglashoppers.com and SA
corporation.

The above graph represents how the respondents think of all the six trending brands for its
overall makeup product lines. 45.7% of them said ColourPop with its budget friendly provides
better quality and has overall better makeup collections. On the other side, 22.9% claims Morphe
has the better quality products with affordable retailing price. 8.6% of the respondents says ABH
has versatile products but the price doesn’t attract the customers much. HudaBeauty is doing
great with its products the reason why 20% of the customers would buy their products because
they are a bit pricey but has better quality than Jeffree Star or Ardell.

neutral for Huda Beauty with 43% and Ardell with 43%. However, people looking for less pricey
lashes will definitely go for Ardell but if one is thinking to invest more money on a pair of lash
that can be reused up to 15 times will go for Huda Beauty lashes cause it will be worth each
buck. 14% of the respondents use other lashes not either of these brands.

Thus, I think both these brands are very competitive with its products quality and collection.
However, ColourPop got the majority votes because of its affordability.

Considering the overall result, it can be stated that the hypothesis has been proved. The
respondents have clearly agreed to the above topic. They have provided with the exact responses
as it was expected. The importance of makeup brands in our society has risen due to escalating
purchasing power there is an increasing demand for makeup products in Bangladesh. Moreover,
other reasons of growing demands of branded makeup products are uplifting a person’s self-
esteem and to enhance their facial features which will make them feel beautiful and confident
which is sometimes seen to the top most priority in our society nowadays. Therefore, the reasons
stated prove why people are more into branded cosmetics and not only female but male are

falling for beauty community as well. Hence, I can say the most trending makeup products in
Bangladesh give us the opportunity to look beautiful and be more confident.
My research had very limited time, lower source, lack of funding, as a result it was prepared
within a very short period of time and had the limited responses of 35 but still, the hypothesis has
been proved. However, in future the research can be carried out with adequate time, adequate
source and sufficient funding. Future scope of further research is possible.
