Biology Lab Genetics
Aim: To identify continuous variation in height/ foot size of 35-50 students in your year group or
age group.
Apparatus:
50 students
Ruler/ meter ruler
Book
Pen
Method:
1. Measure the height / foot span of 50 students in your year group/ age group.
2. Record the data into 10-15 intervals.
3. Display this data on a histogram.
Background Knowledge:
Heredity, also called inheritance, is the passing on of traits from parents to their offspring; either
through asexual reproduction or sexual reproduction. The offspring cells acquire the genetic
information of their parents. Moles of DNA carry information that codes for various proteins.
These proteins interact with the environment, causing observable pattern of life. Any difference
between cells, individual organisms, or groups of organism of any species caused either by
genetic differences or by the effect of the environmental factors on the expression of the genetic
potentials. Through heredity, variations between individuals can accumulate and cause species to
evolve by natural selection.
Variation is the differences between individuals within a species. Feathers of different organisms
in a species show continuous variation and discontinuous variation. Human height is an example
of continuous variation. It ranges from that of the shortest person in the world to the tallest
person. Any height is possible between these values. A characteristic of any species with only a
limited number of possible values shows discontinuous variation. In the ABO blood group
system, only four blood groups are possible (A, B, AB or O). There are no values in between, so
this is discontinuous variation.
Conclusion:
Genetic variation occurs as allies in gametes are separated and randomly united upon
fertilization. The continuous variation of teenager’s height varied with maturity.
Reflection:
Continuous variation was used to determine the height of students.
