Lesson Plan for Grade 1, Music, 30 minutes

Learning Objective (Music)

MELODY #3. A sequence of sounds may move from low to high, high to low, or stay the same.

Materials

● Copies of Hot Cross Buns


● Teacher copy of Andy Pandy
● Triangles
● Drums
● Sticks
● Glockenspiel

Opening (5 mins)

-Rhythm Rondo Game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPeXqMzYCZQ)

● Students sit in circle


● Teacher says a rhythm while clapping the beat on her knees
● Students join in and the teacher continues the rhythm/beat a few times until most students are
following along
● Teacher stops participating and allows students to carry the rhythm/beat on their own until most
students are following along
● Teacher tells students that they need to remember their rhythm
● Teacher claps and says a different rhythm/beat, students respond by clapping and saying their
original rhythm
● Continue for 5 minutes, switching the beat and rhythm every couple minutes

Anticipatory Set (5 mins)


-Andy Pandy
● Teacher sings Andy Pandy to students, putting her arms at different heights to
correspond with the notes
● Students sing without hand motions
● Students add hand motions and teacher stops demonstration
● Repeat a few times

Develop (5 mins)

-Review Hot Cross Buns

● Teacher groups students into groups of three. Each student gets a different instrument. One plays
a triangle, one plays sticks, and the other plays a drum. The teacher explains that each instrument
makes a different sound, either high, low, or somewhere in between.
● Teacher sings hot cross buns and explains that each student is responsible for a note throughout
the song. For example, the triangle player plays along with all the B’s, the sticks player plays
along with all the A’s, and the drum player plays along with all the G’s
● Teacher sings once through with students then allows them to sing once on their own
● Students add their instrument while continuing to sing. After each round, students switch
instruments so that everyone has a turn with everything

Apply (10 mins)

Andy Pandy Music Notation

● Teacher lets students know that they are going back to working with Andy Pandy
● Teacher and students review the exercise of raising and lowering their hands as the melody goes
up and down
● Teacher explains that students will work in pairs or groups of three to complete the musical staff
of Andy Pandy
● Teacher distributes a bag of glass stone and staff sheets for students to work with
● Students work to complete the activity
● Students compare with another group
● Teacher calls everyone back together and completes the activity on the board, showing how the
melody goes up and down in the song

Closing (5 mins)

Melody Imitation
● Each student gets a glockenspiel
● Teacher plays a melody and students attempt to imitate it
● Teacher makes the melody progressively more complex, starting with a melody that stays the
same, and then melodies that move up and down
