Assignment 12

Name: alpapikabaka
Course/ section: BS

Instruction: Watch the video Typhoon Haiyan: Eye of the Storm on You tube
(https:www.youtube.com/watch? v=BnanhLg_LG DmQ). Then, with a partner, write reaction
essay on the documentary using the following questions.

1. What are the impacts of climate change on meteorological patterns?

 We all know that climate change is definitely one of the major problems the world is
facing. The destruction typhoon Haiyan caused was immense. Meteorological patterns
has basically 5 major components which are temperature, wind, air pressure, precipitation
and humidity. The five components in weather patterns are strongly affected by climate
change, more specifically the heating up of ocean waters which in return causes the
formula to create the perfect calamity in terms of thunderstorms and typhoons. It starts
off with the strong heat temperatures from the ocean that creates a dry and stronger wind
which pulls in moisture or humid air to the formation of tropical thunderstorms. After the
moisture is pulled the thunderstorm would then convert it to heat which in return will pull
more wind in the forming thunderstorm and cause evaporation. This cycle would create
more air that will flow toward the eye of the storm which would create a massive weight
for the thunderstorm to become a typhoon. Climate change of course creates a rise and
ocean water levels along with the heating of the water temperature climate change
throughout the years develop stronger and deadlier storms.

2. What pieces of evidence are presented that prove or reinforce the connection between climate
change and the changing meteorological patterns?
 Just like what happen within the video showed the evidence that reinforce the case of
climate change and weather pattern change being connected is the Typhoon Haiyan that
hit the Philippines which referred as the strongest typhoon in history. Before the typhoon
landed here in the Philippines it was like any other thunderstorm, but due to the changes
in weather being that the Pacific Ocean water temperature had the optimal heat and the
water levels raised the thunderstorm developed and evolved to a super typhoon. This
typhoon comes on top of other extraordinary meteorological events that have occurred
before. It started off from cold waters. The path from China to the landfall in the
Philippines as the super typhoon Haiyan: Eye of the storm simply showed that it gained
more strength after it went across Vietnam from floods caused by a cyclone in Sardinia,
the typhoons within us, and also the unprecedented rains that caused the Pakistan floods.
This are some evidence to prove that there is a connection between the climate change
and the changing meteorological patterns.
3. How did the documentary affect your personal beliefs and actions toward protecting the
environment?
 The documentary film of typhoon Haiyan is an eye opener to the both us. It affects our
personal beliefs and silently relayed a message, the true importance of protecting the
environment. It made us both think of how the country together with the government
should invest more time and effort in making sure the environment is protected. Not just
for my country but for the whole world as well, I contemplated and questioned myself
“Are we really doing our best in protecting the environment or are we putting the world
at doom by turning blind eye of what’s happening around us”. My belief changed and I
see it as protecting the environment should be in the top list of priorities. There are many
simple ways to assist in protecting the environment. As an example, saving electricity by
turning it off once we didn't use it, employing a reusable bag, conserving energy, and
stopping people on cutting a number of trees instead we should always further propagate
it to plant more. This documentary shows that we cannot protect the environment alone
we as a nation should work together to prevent this kind of disaster in the future.
