Most importantly, the boarding house prepares you for university and life beyond that. Students learn to be
independent in several ways, learning to efficiently and effectively manage everything from pocket money to free
time. The leadership opportunities that boarding life gives are endless. From the Prefect role as Head Boarder to
smaller but equally important roles such as Corridor Prefects – the Boarding House has it all! These opportunities
are not just great for the development of interpersonal skills that help to create long lasting friendships but also give
many boarders the chance to develop their communication and active listening skills.

Students living in boarding houses experience difficulty along academic and family areas. This can be attributed
to the fact that living away from home requires a lot of adjustments on the part of the students as well as coping
with the novelty of subjects learned in college. Also, comforts are given up and one has to face the rigors of
living independently. On the other hand, social area is considered as never a problem because students living in
a boarding house gain friends along the way as they interact and relate with their board mates.

Parents Working Abroad and They Effects on Their Children
3858 WordsMar 28, 201316 Pages
Better job opportunities and higher pay overseas have urged many Filipinos to work abroad and leave their families for
years. In fact, way back in 2006 alone, 1.5 million Filipino workers were deployed to various parts of the globe. So, a
number children these days experience the absence of fathers or mothers, who tend to come home only once in every two
to three years. The situation is far from normal and is more-likely to cause a huge impact on the mental and emotional
well-being of the children. The increasing amount of absentee parents becomes more alarming because without them,
discipline is not enforced at home.
When questioned, the child may disclose worries about parents or other family members getting hurt or killed, and
may feel responsible for protecting them from harm. Kids are also very perceptive to what a parent at home is
feeling. For example when a mother is distressed when her husband is going away, these feelings may consciously
or subconsciously trouble children. According to most experts, separation anxiety is a natural event in human
development. Fears and anxieties among children arenormal, common and passing reactions to a variety of
situations. But separation anxiety may be much more apparent in cases where one of the parents has to leave home
for long periods of time to work a b r o a d , “ E m o t i o n a l hardship” and “difficulties in social adjustment” are

around you like a shadow? Does he or she refuse to let you go out without her? Does she get upset or refuse to go
to school or a friend’s house without you? Your child may suffer from Separation Anxiety. In some cases the child
may simply refuse to leave the house. When it’s time to leave for school, the child may complain of a
The Overseas Filipino Worker phenomenon is a vital and growing sector of the Filipino society. Labor Migration
started during 1974, and has not stopped since (Ortigas, 2008). While 3.8 million Filipinos the total labor force are
working abroad as temporary migrants. While millions of children in the developing world grow up with at least one
parent living abroad (Cortes, 2011). This research aims to find out the actual experiences of adolescents who have
parents that work abroad. The researchers also want to understand what they go through and what are the things
that affect them. The impact of migration varies – ranging from economic benefits not only for the family but the
country in general through its remittances to the security and well being of the family of migrants. But a major
concern here is the social costs of migration, specifically, to the children left behind (Reyes, 2008). This study
intends to discover and find out more about the experiences of OFWs or Overseas Filipino Workers’ adolescent
children. This study also seeks to find out what are the experiences of Overseas Filipino Workers’ Adolescent
Children, what are the perceived effects of having OFW parents as adolescents, how do they characterize their
relationship with their parents, and how do they cope with the situation of not having a physically present parent.

Another setback on the effect of the OFW phenomena is when absent parenting is being replaced by material wealth and
gadgets (e.g., cell phone, laptop, iPod, PSP, XBOX, Wii, etc.) to affirm the affection of absent parent, this could result in
material expectation rather than affection (Reyes, Melanie, 2003: Migration and Filipino Children Left Behind). Based on
several studies done by government and non-government organizations, about nine (9) million Filipino children under the
age of 18 are left behind by one or both parents to work attentively or live permanently abroad (Hugo, Graeme, 2005).
However, the major reason for working abroad among OFW’s is to send their children to good, preferably exclusive schools
from primary up to college because they acknowledge that the best thing they can give their children is the right for
education. Therefore more OFW children are enrolled in private schools and are more likely to participate in extra-
curricular activities and gain exposure. These do not only broaden their learning, but also make them gain overall academic
performance compared to students with strict budget.
