MATLAB 2009b Installation

Network Version – Windows

These steps describe the process of installing a concurrent MATLAB 2009b client on a
windows computer, i.e. the MATLAB client will be using the K.U.Leuven license server
and therefore requires your computer to be connected to the K.U.Leuven network.

Before installing you need the following items:

FIK (File Installation Key)
license.dat file containing the information on the license servers used.

If you do not have one or both of these items, contact your license administrator.

Important remark: During installation, please DESELECT any Toolboxes that you have
no use for. Installing toolboxes that you don't need, may impact the availability for those
who really are in need of those Toolboxes. Deselecting Toolboxes is possible when you
select the Custom option during the installation.
Thank you for your cooperation.

The installation takes 2 steps:

step 1 = installation of the MATLAB client software on the computer
step 2 = final configuration
After performing step 1, the MATLAB software will work. The final configuration is an
additional step to take advantage of the redundant setup of the license servers at ICTS.
With this additional step, your computer will automatically look for another license
server if the current license server fails to work. Hopefully this will not happen too often,
but to be sure, you can execute step 2 also.

Installation of the MATLAB Client software

Installation Summary
To install a concurrent client:
1) Start the installer, choose the option to "Install manually without using the Internet"
and click Next.
2) Accept the License Agreement.
3) Choose "I have the File Installation Key for my license" and enter in the FIK. Click
Next.
4) Choose Typical if you want to install the toolboxes under license, confirm the
installation folder and click Next. If you want to make a selection out of the toolboxes,
select Custom.
5) When prompted enter the path or browse to the license file and click Next.
6) The installer will confirm your options and you can click Install to proceed.

1
The software is distributed on dvd or as an iso.

Step 1: Start the Installer

Double click on setup.exe.

The Mathworks installer will start unpacking and should then display the screen.

Choose Install manually without using the Internet and click Next.

2
Step 2: Review the software licensing agreement
Review the software licensing agreement and, if you agree with the terms,
select Yes and click Next.

Step 3: Enter File Installation Key (FIK)

Select the option I have the File Installation Key and enter this key into this dialog box.

3
Step 4: Choose Installation Type
Choose Typical to install all the toolboxes connected with this license and click Next.
At this point we ask for your cooperation and ask you to choose for a Custom
installation and please DESELECT any Toolboxes that you have no use for.

Step 5: Specify Installation Folder

Specify the name of the folder where you want to install MATLAB in the Folder
Selection dialog box.
You can accept the default destination folder or specify the name of a different
installation folder. If the folder doesn’t exist, the installer creates it.

4
Click Next to continue with the installation, an overview of the different toolboxes will
appear.

Step 6: Select Toolboxes to Install

Select only those toolboxes that you need, once the selection is made, click Next.

Step 7: License file location

Enter the location where you stored the license.dat file (it is common to store it under the
MATLAB directory at the Program Files folder)

5
Step 8: Installation options
Check the installation options (the proposed default options should be ok)

An overview of the settings is given and clicking the Install button will actually start the
installation.

Step 9: Complete the Installation

6
It is possible that some additional configuration steps are needed, they are shown at the
end of the installation process.

When the MathWorks Installer finishes, it displays the Setup Complete dialog box.

7
This second step is optional, but it is better to execute this additional step.

After completing the installation, the client license file should be removed and an
environment variable should be used in its place.

On Windows the client license file (“network.lic”) is located in $MATLAB\licenses.

Rename that file to “nework.old”

The environment variable should be added. One way to achieve this is:

Go to the Control Panel and select “system”. In Vista, select “Advanced system
settings”. In XP, go to advanced tab.

Select “Environment Variables”

8
Enter the information:
[email protected],
[email protected],[email protected]

Select “OK” to confirm the new variable.

The newly defined variable should be visible in the list
