QMD Quality Alert 005-2020 Wrong Pressure Rating Marking of Flanges

This quality alert from Aramco Overseas concerns socket weld flanges that were incorrectly marked as class "1500" when the purchase order specified class "900". The root cause was that the manufacturer's ERP system uses the same code for 900Lb and 1500Lb flanges for sizes 2" and below. To address this, manufacturers must differentiate between 900Lb and 1500Lb flanges in all sizes in their ERP systems, or include a warning to validate customer requirements. As a corrective action, the manufacturer implemented a warning in its product configuration software and re-marked the affected flanges as 900Lb with confirmation they meet the 1500Lb pressure rating.

Quality alert
Subjec t: Wrong pressure rating marking of flanges
Quality Alert Reference Number: 005_2020
Issue Date: 3/10/2020
Issued By : Anar Suleimenova
Distribution: All Aramco Overseas Offices and Inspection Agencies

Bac kground
Socket Weld flanges have been marked as class “1500” instead of as required by Purchase Order description class
“900”

Root Causes
As per Purchase Order SW RTJ Flanges 1” 900Lb were requested. ASME B16.5 standard does not include sizes for
flanges 900Lb pressure rating for 2” and below.
As per ASME B16.5 for Class 900 flanges, Class 1500 dimensions in sizes 2” and below shall be used. Manufacturer
internally uses the same item code in their ERP system and after the order is confirmed in the ERP, the description
and marking will be modified manually, so that information is sent to the marking unit after the machining of flanges.
Referenc e
Aramco Specification No/Revision: ASME B16.5
Title: Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings NPS ½” Through 24”
Paragraph: Table 18
Item Description: SW RTJ Flanges 1” 900Lb

Rec ommendation
Manufactures shall differentiate flanges of pressure rating class 900 and class 1500 for all sizes including sizes of 2”
and below in their ERP systems or warning shall take place for validation with customer requirements.

Correc tive ac tion

A warning has been implemented for the cases when 900Lb pressure rating, size of 2” and below are requested in product
configuration software, through which all the items of Manufacturer’s quotations are updated (structure and routes). The system
does not allow to continue with the offer without customer validation of the alternatives (according ASME standard should be to
upgrade the pressure rating to 1.500Lb).
Flanges with wrong marking have been re-marked with 900Lb pressure rating with compliance letter from the Manufacturer that
flanges are in full compliance for pressure rating 1500Lb as well.
