Aesthetic movement:

The word aesthetic means beauty, whenever we use this word it means we are describing the
beauty of something. It deals with the visual and sensual qualities of the art and design. It is the
name of the movement too which was started in the English literature. Critic Walter Hamilton
regularized and named it as an Aesthetic movement in 1882. This movement challenged the
norms of Victorian society that was established in literature.

Decadent movement was started in the late 19th century in the western Europe and the
participants of this movement were the followers of the Aesthetic movement as the beauty as the
main subject of the poetry and art. they focused on the material things when they subjected
toward the beauty as the subject of the poetry. They reflected the decay of the Victorian values.
Oscar wild is considered as the father of this movement who first gave the concept of
Aestheticism in the English literature. This movement was started in the 1860 and got its end in
1890. Themes for this movement were “Art for art’s sake, Art should only be art, Art should not
teach a lesson and art should only be beautiful. Oscar Wild, Ernest Dowson, Lionel Johnson and
Arthur Symons are the famous aesthetics in the English literature.

Oscar Wild is considered as the father of the Aesthetic movement in the English literature. He
gave strength to the theory of Art for art’s sake and carried the movement further to its end point.
According to his point of view art had no other aim except to gratify the taste of the artist. It has
no relation with the morality. Artist is the one who lives in his own world.

Ernest Dowson is the renowned poet of Victorian era. He is among the poets of English literature
named as the Decadents. He lived in London and participated in many movements in the very
little span of his life as he died in the age of 32. He spent an active social life as he spent time in
many literature movements.

Lionel Johnson was born in 1867 was renowned poet and critic of the English literature. He is
also known because of his lyrical poems also representative of the tragic generation of the 1890
which was affected by decadence movement. He was died at the age of only 35.

Arthur Symons is known as the English poet and the famous critic. He was a part of the
movement named as the Rhymers’ Club along the William Butler Yeats. His main subject of the
writing was love and loss. He also headed toward the movement named as the symbolist
movement and gave it a special direction.
