b) Verify the homogeneity of the kinematic equation, s = v0 t + Vza r2, where s is
displacement, v0 is initial velocity, a is acceleration and t, time using dimension analysis.

a) Differentiate between vector and scalar quantities.
b) A motorcycle travels 30 km due north and then 40 km due east. Find the magnitude and
direction of the motorcycle's resultant displacement. Show your illustration and
calculation.

A motorist is travelling in a straight line between two points in which the distance is 500 m.
His speed at first point is 10 ms" 1 .
a) What is the time taken to reach the second point if he does not accelerate?
b) Determine the acceleration after he applies a break at point 25 m before stopping at the
second point and the time taken to stop. Consider the acceleration is uniform.
c) Sketch the velocity time graph for (a) and (b).

b) Figure 2 shows two masses m, = 5 kg and m2 = 20 kg connected with a light string over
a frictionless pulley. The system is released from rest when m2 is 4.0 m above the floor.
Determine the velocity of m2 immediately just before it strikes the floor.

QUESTION 6
A car A of 1000 kg is traveling North at 15.0 m s -1 . This car collided with another car B of
2000 kg at 10 m s"1 which is heading East at the four-junction road as shown in Figure 3.
Treating each car as a particle and it is an inelastic collision, Find
a) the total momentum just before the collision and its direction.

A highway curve has a radius of 500 m. The road should be banked so that a car travelling
at 110 km h~1 will not skid. Obtain an expression for the banking angle. At what angle

and 50% of its volume in oil as shown in Figure 4. If the density of the body is 0.74 g

QUESTION 1
Three forces A = 100 N, B = 200 N and C = 150 N make angles of 45°, 120° and 210°
respectively with the positive x-axis.
a) Sketch the forces graphically to show the resultant force.
b) Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force.
c) Find the expression for each component forces and then determine the resultant force in
term of vector unit.

QUESTION 2
a) A block m^ of 5.0 kg is resting on a horizontal surface and is connected by a light string
passing over a frictionless pulley to hang another block m2 of 8.0 kg. The coefficient of
friction between the block and the horizontal surface is 0.6. Find the acceleration of each
block and the tension in the string.

A 10-kg ball at A of a pendulum is released from the height of 1.0 m and hit the second
2.0-kg ball at B as shown in Figure 5. Assuming all energy from first ball at A is
transferred to the second ball at B, the second ball then makes a trajectory and end at D.
If C is 1.0 m below B, find
a) the initial velocity of the second ball to make a trajectory,
b) the time for the second ball to reach at D,
c) the distance CD,
d) the magnitude and direction of the second ball just before it strikes the surface at D.

QUESTION 3
a) Trolley A of mass 2.0 kg is placed to the left of compressed spring while trolley B of
mass 4.0 kg is placed on the right of the same spring. Initially the system is at rest and
on the frictionless surface. As the spring is released, it expands exerting equal and
opposite forces on the trolleys. The velocity of trolley B is 2.0 m s~1.
i) What is the velocity of trolley A?
ii) Prove that the ratio of their velocities is the same as the ratio of their kinetic energies
iii) Calculate the impulse of the force on trolley B and the work done on trolley A.

b) A 0.5 kg sled is released from rest at the top of a 30° incline plane of 4.0 m long and
reaches at the bottom with a speed of 4.0 m s~\ Calculate the change in potential
energy and the change in kinetic energy. How much work was done by frictional force?
Determine the average speed of the sled.

The angular velocity of a wheel increases from 300 revolutions per minute to 1800
revolutions per minute in 5.0 s at constant angular acceleration. Determine
a) the final angular velocity in rad s"1,
b) the angular acceleration,
c) the number of revolution in 5.0 s,
d) the linear speed at point 0.4 m from the centre of the flywheel,
e) the radial and tangential acceleration at point 0.4 m from the centre of the flywheel,
f) the constant torque required for the flywheel to accelerate at this rate, If it has a moment
of inertia of 40 kg m2,
g) the final kinetic energy.
