3.TERMINOLOGY
A dictionary (glossary) of the main terms and their definitions used within the activities of the R&D can be
consulted in-house via the DESP or by clicking on the following link: SCPO_MGPJ07_0116.
3.1.DEFINITIONS
For the requirements of this norm, the following terms are defined:
Anosmia: Sensitivity default to the olfactory stimulus. Anosmia may be total or partial, permanent or
temporary.
Perceived intensity: A perceived intensity is a quantitative measure of a descriptor by the trained sensory
panel. The perceived intensities vary from 1 (not perceptible) to 6 (unbearable
perception).
Perception intensity, correspond to the global odorous intensity.
Monadic: Presentation of samples one by one, individually.
Odour: Interpretation by the brain of the signals supplied by the olfactive receptors during their
stimulations by odorous substances.
Organizer: Person who organises the odour tests directs the activities of the panel, recruits, forms
and supervises the judges. It can also analyse and interpret the results.
Initiated pane:l This term is made up of « subjects » called « judges ». It follows an initiation into a
sensory analysis. The panel is trained to assess odour strength and recognise the
odorous nature. The judges must not attend the preparation of sessions and must
observe the general assessment instructions.
Repetition: This means repeat the assessment of the sample, independently, by the panelists.
Vial or Marmotte: (Vial: chemical term; marmotte: perfumery term).
This term refers to a small glass container sealed with a screw thread and a stopper
provided with a protective cover.
3.2.ACRONYMS
For the requirements of this norm, the following acronyms are defined:
POM: Polyacetals
VOC: Volatil Organic Compound
PID: Detector with Photo Ionisation
TEP: Thermoplastic TExtile

5.5.3.CLIMATIC CHAMBER FOR THE WHOLE PART
Example: Climatic chamber WEISS VCE 1000 of 1m 3 equipped with a tap for perform a sampling of the
enclosure atmosphere.
The environmental chamber test takes place in 4 phases.
The pre-conditioning phase allows to adjust the temperature and the hydrometric of enclosure and renew the
purified air.
The stabilization phase of 30 minutes, allowing the stabilization of the constants, and the air sampling at outlet
of the enclosure to analyse of "white."
The test phase begins when the part is introduced into the enclosure; it comprises a first phase of 2h30 which
allows the part to achieve a stable VOC emission regime and therefore odour, and a second sampling stage
which lasts 2 hours maximum. The preconditioning temperature is selected to 5°C above that of the test to
compensate the opening of the chamber during introduction of the part.
The cleaning phase that includes a rise in temperature of the chamber at 240°C in dry air, with an air sweep of
4m3/h (period = 10h). Then, the chamber and the levies channels are cleaned under renewed air at a rate of
0.4m3/h and humid (50%) at 70°C.
Remarks and recommendations:
The part must be introduced in full within the enclosure and must not touch the walls of the enclosure.
If the room is cumbersome it can be folded into the enclosure but the air must circulate easily.
Air stirring must be adapted according to the size of the part to have a contact speed with the walls of the
enclosure of 0.1m/s.
Sampling lines are reduced lengths but also heated to prevent recondensation of the sampled species.
Moreover, they are purged at least 1 minute before sampling.
The air sampling flow rate does not exceed 20% renewal of the flow of the enclosure.
The end of the cleaning is achieved when the air was renewed at least 10 times (or value VOC with PID
below 3 ppmC).

RECRUITMENT AND PANELISTES SELECTION
Panel must consist of at least 5 persons internal or external to the company.
The judges are recruited for their availability, their olfactory ability, their interest and motivation for the olfactory
analysis, their intellectual capacities (concentration, logical reasoning) and their physiological level (do not
recruit heavy smokers or persons with allergies or chronic rhinitis).
INITIAL TRAINING
Adapt the period training to the knowledge and experience in the olfactory analysis of trainees.
People with anosmia are not excluded from the panel but the anosmia should be known by the organizer.
Odorous intensity
Range of butanol presentation in the order
The organizer has the range butanol in the order indicating for each solution the intensity level
corresponding to the rating scale.
The judges must make a break of at least 1 minute between each concentration of butanol.
Assessment of the range of butanol in comparative mode
The panelists carry out comparative tests in scoring throughout the range butanol.
The organizer notes the results of ranking and scoring of the different levels.
Assessment of different butanol solutions in monadic mode
The panelists lead the rating tests monadic.
If possible, assessment of various materials or parts in monadic mode
The panelists perform rating monadic testing on a sample or samples whose olfactory evaluation was
previously performed by a validated panel.
The organizer compares the odour intensity results from the two panels and gives a return at the panelists
on the sample reference intensity.
TEST THE END OF TRAINING
The judges classify different levels of the range butanol.
Following the initial training, the criterion of conformity with these tests is the correct classification and 1
inversion on levels consecutive is accepted.
