Science and Technology:
Science comes from the Latin word scientia, which means knowledge. It refers to a systematic and
methodical activity of building and organizing knowledge about how the universe behaves through
observation, experimentation or both.
According to John Heilbron (2003), science required invention to devise techniques, abstractions,
apparatuses and organizations to describe their regularities and law like descriptions.
Technology is the application of scientific knowledge, laws, and principles to produce services, materials,
tools and machines aimed at solving real-world problems.

Science, Technology and Society:


Science, Technology and Society is an academic discipline which concerns on how the progression science
and technology shapes and influence the society.
STS applies the methods drawn from history, philosophy, and sociology to study nature of science and
technology and ultimately judge their value and place in society.
MYTHS OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
Read about the lists of emerging and ethical dilemmas and policy issues in science and technology
from year 2018 – 2020 from the John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology and Values of the University
of Notre Dame and answer the following questions as to:
1. What is the emerging ethical dilemma all about?
2. What factors or events led to this dilemma?
3. What are the social implications of this dilemma?
4. Why is it important to question the moral and ethical issues surrounding innovations of science
and technology?
5. In the face of this dilemma, why is it important to study STS?

Health:
Penicillin – Alexander Flaming – Friday, September 28, 1928 – Penicillum notatum – the challenge of mass-
producing drug was daunting.
March 14, 1942 – the first patient was treated for streptococcal septicemia with US- made penicillin
produced by Merck & Co.
