PERIOD ONE
Group One: Base runners will work on the primary and secondary leads at first base.
Group Two: Base runners will work on the primary and secondary leads at second base.
Group Three: Base runners will work on the primary and secondary leads at third base.
Runners will work on their primary leads, which should increase constantly over a short
period of time. You will be set and have your maximum lead when the pitcher comes to
the set position. As the pitcher starts with his delivery towards the plate the base
runners will shuffle off the bag with a secondary lead. You must be aggressive thinking
to break up the double play and to get a excellent jump towards the following
base. After the ball has crossed the plate all runners will sprint back to their base while
maintaining eye contact at the catcher. Runners will return to the outside of the base
on both the stand-up return and the head first return. Each base runner must be
aggressive and learn how far off the bases you can get. All base runners should mark or
count your steps off the bags! All groups will rotate in each period.
Fundamental Series Three
Period One
PERIOD TWO
Group One: HOME TO FIRST--Runners will work on getting a good jump out of the batters box. Left
handed hitters first step out of the box is with the left foot. Right-handed hitters will step with the
right foot as their primary step towards first base. Runners will work on touching the front of the
base with either foot. Do not lunge for the base; stay smooth with your stride. After the foot
touches the base the runner must glance over his right shoulder for a possible erratic throw from
and infielder.
Group Two: HIT AND RUN--Runners will react to a hit and run situation form first base. The runner
will shorten his lead on half step. At no time should a base runner be picked off when a hit and run
sign is flashed. As the pitcher breaks to the plate the base runner(s) will break to second base. The
runner must go even if he does not get a good jump for the batter will be swinging to protect the
runner. The base runner must always look into the plate area the time the ball reaches the
hitter. On the third or fourth step the base runner will look into the plate area and react according
to the situation. A ball in the air will cause the base runner to read the ball. A ball on the ground
will cause the base runner to advance and pick-up the third base coach. A ball hit on a line drive
means keeps going. If the base runner reads a swing and a miss on his third step then he must steal
the base on his own. Do not slow your speed down on a swing and miss from the hitter.
Group Three: SUICIDE SQUEEZE--The runner at third base will get a primary lead, not large enough
to draw attention to him. The runner at third wills always a walking lead towards the plate. The
runner at third will break for the plate when the pitcher's arm begins to move forward at the top of
his motion. If there are runners on base and the runner at third is caught in a rundown stay in the
rundown long enough for all runners to advance. Note: When the suicide squeeze is on, all other
base runners will treat the play as a straight steal.
Fundamental Series Three
Period Two
PERIOD THREE
Group One: STRAIGHT STEALS OF SECOND BASE--Runners will work on
getting a good jump for a steal of second base. If the runner does not get a
good jump, he will not steal the base. If a one way steal sign is given with
two outs the runner will break on the pitcher's first movement. The rule will
apply for both a right and left-handed pitcher.
Group Two: STRAIGHT STEALS OF THIRD BASE-- Runners will work on getting
a good jump for a steal of third base. The base runner must remember to
come up in the base line so that a straight line is available towards third
base. The base runner should always be conscious of the pitcher who only
takes "one look" at the runner.
Group Three: TAG OF FLY BALL AT THIRD BASE--Runner will work on tagging
up on fly ball to various areas of the field.
Fundamental Series Three
Period Three
PERIOD FOUR
Group One: READING DIRT BALLS AT FIRST BASE--The runner will get his
primary lead and then take and aggressive secondary lead while reading the
ball in the dirt. If the ball bounces up to the plate and off the catcher we will
steal the base. A ball that lands directly in front of the catcher is not a ball to
advance on.
Group Two: READING DIRT BALLS AT SECOND BASE--The runner will follow the
same procedures as the runner at first.
Group Three: READING DIRT BALLS AT THIRD BASE--The runner at third base
will advance only when the ball has bounced far enough away from the
catcher. The instructions by the third base coach will also play a part in the
runner's decisions.
Fundamental Series Three
Period Four
PERIOD FIVE
Groups One and two: RUNNING A DOUBLE--Runners will work on getting a
good jump out of the batters box while making a good turn at first base. The
runner will pick up the third base coach approximately 18 feet before second
base.
Group Three: SCORING FROM SECOND BASE--Runners will work on getting a
good primary and secondary lead at second base, and then scoring from
second. The runner must make a good turn at third base and pick-up the
third base coach.
Fundamental Series Three
Period Five
PERIOD SIX
Group One: BUNTING AT THE PLATE--Players will be bunting at the plate.
After a successful bunt the player will sprint to first base using the proper
techniques.
Group Two: READING BUNTS AT FIRST BASE--Base runners(s) will read and
react to bunts at the plate. Base runner(s) will shorten their primary leads
one half step, while maintaining an aggressive secondary lead. The base
runner(s) cannot afford to be picked off when the bunt sign is flashed.
Group Three: READING BUNTS AT SECOND BASE--Base runner(s) will
follow the procedures as that of Group 2.
