5- If a b , then either may replace the other in any statement
without changing the truth or falsity of the statement.
DEFINITION 1 Linear Equation in One Variable
Any equation that can be written in the form:
a x b 0, a0 Standard Form
Where a and b are real constants and x is a variable, is called a linear
equation (first degree equation) in one variable.
EXAMPLE 1: (a) Solve: 5 x 9 3x 7 and check.
Solution (a): ( see text book page 46).
EXAMPLE 1: (b) Solve and check: 7 x 10 4 x 5
Solution: We will use the properties of equality to transform the given equation into an
equivalent equation whose solution is obvious.
7 x 10 4 x 5
7 x 10 10 4 x 5 10 7 x 4 x 15 Add 10 to both sides and combining like terms.
7 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 15 3x 15 Subtract 4x from both sides
3x 15
x 5 Divide both sides by 3.

DEFINITION: For a and b are real numbers, we say that:
a is less than b and written a b.
a is greater than b and written a b.
a is less than or equal to b and written a b.
a is greater than or equal to b and written a b.
The double inequality a x b means that x a and x b ; that is, x is
between a and b including b but not a .
The interval notation: a, b x : a x b .
