A- Read the dialogue and answer the questions below
Mike: You know? Sometimes I feel sorry I went into business.
Adam: Really? Don’t you like what you are doing?
Mike: Well, I get a good salary, but the job doesn’t really interest me. I wish I hadn’t followed my family’s advice.
If I had gone for law, I would have been a lawyer.
Adam: There are thousands of university graduates going in for that job though.
Mike: yes, I know. But still, I regret having chosen this career.

:To express a wish or regret, we need to


Change the verb tense: Present Past simple Past Past perfect -1
)+ –( / )– +( Switch from negative to affirmative (and vice versa) -2
.Present: I don’t know the answer to this question I wish / If only I knew the answer to this question
.After wish and if we can use were instead of was
E.g. I’m not rich.I can’t help poor people I wish I were a rich man. (If I were rich I could help poor people)
.Past: I didn’t know the answer to that question I wish / If only I had known the answer to that question
Examples:
1- I don't have enough money to buy this laptop. (Present)
I wish I had enough money. (Simple past)
2- I couldn’t buy that mobile phone from the shop yesterday. It was too expensive! (Past)
If only it hadn’t been expensive. (past perfect)
-We can use conditional 3: I could have bought that mobile phone if it hadn’t been too expensive.
