3 Overview
NOTE
Unless otherwise specified, smartphones and UEs described in this document refer only to iPhones in an
iOS version of 10.2 or later.
4.1 Principles
An iPhone sets up a specific connection with a Huawei eNodeB during its access. This
process is called handshake. After a handshake succeeds, coordinated control functions can be
implemented. For example, the iPhone can flexibly request a specified group of DRX
parameters from the network, request the network to migrate the iPhone to idle mode, or
allow the network to quickly transmit data for background services (such as file upload and
download) during off-peak hours. This improves the power saving performance of iPhones
and user experience. Figure 4-1 shows the working process.
l If event A2 or A3 parameters have been configured, the A2 Announcement Message and the
event A2 or A3 configuration are delivered to the UE simultaneously. If event A2 or A3
parameters are not configured, the A2 Announcement Message is separately delivered to the
UE.
l The difference between the A3-based inter-frequency A2 RSRP threshold
(InterFreqHoGroup.A3InterFreqHoA2ThdRsrp) or A4/A5-based inter-frequency A2 RSRP
threshold (InterFreqHoGroup.InterFreqHoA2ThdRsrp) and the inter-frequency A1/A2
hysteresis (InterFreqHoGroup.InterFreqHoA1A2Hyst) in the event A2 configuration must
be different from a specified threshold in the A2 Announcement Message. This specified
threshold is always -139 dBm.
l In the A2 Announcement Message used for handshake, the timeToTrigger and reportInterval
fields now indicate related information about the eNodeB software version. The information
varies with the software version.
2. The UE responds to the eNodeB with an RRC Connection Reconfiguration Complete
message.
3. When the UE receives the A2 Announcement Message and it supports smartphone
awareness-based coordinated control functions, the UE determines whether to send a
proprietary Initial Message over a specified Media Access Control (MAC) channel
element (CE) to the eNodeB to shake hands with the eNodeB based on service needs.
This Initial Message includes the UE software version.
4. On receipt of the Initial Message, the eNodeB responds with a Handshake message
containing A2 and A3 handover threshold offsets. Coordinated control processing
operates only after the handshake between the eNodeB and UE is successfully
completed.
NOTE
The UE uses the A2 and A3 handover threshold offsets to request the eNodeB to restore the
default DRX parameter settings.
1. The eNodeB determines whether the requested DRX parameters are specific to a DRX
algorithm.
– If the DRX parameters are specific to a DRX algorithm, the eNodeB proceeds with
2.
– If the DRX parameters are not specific to a DRX algorithm but, for example, to an
ANR algorithm, the eNodeB rejects the UE's request.
2. The eNodeB determines the number of bearers established for the UE and the bearer
type.
– If more than three bearers have been set up for the UE or if guaranteed bit rate
(GBR) bearers are set up for the UE, the eNodeB rejects the UE's request.
– If three or fewer non-GBR bearers have been set up for the UE, the eNodeB
proceeds with 3.
3. The eNodeB determines whether a signaling procedure or VoLTE service is ongoing.
– If the eNodeB is processing a signaling procedure (such as CSFB, SRVCC, or
bearer setup) or VoLTE service, the eNodeB rejects the UE's request.
– If the eNodeB is not processing a signaling procedure or VoLTE service, the
eNodeB proceeds with 4.
4. The eNodeB determines whether the DRX feature is activated.
– If the DRX feature is deactivated, the eNodeB rejects the UE's request.
– If the DRX feature is activated, the eNodeB proceeds with 5.
5. The eNodeB selects DRX parameters requested by the UE and sends them to the UE
through an RRC Connection Reconfiguration message.
The following table lists the DRX parameter groups that the eNodeB tailors for
smartphones.
DrxParaG DrxP OnD DrxI DrxR Long Supp DrxS Short

l After a UE sends a CA Enable flag to the eNodeB along with information about uplink
or downlink traffic volume, the eNodeB determines whether to activate traffic-aware CA
and SCells for the UE.
l After the UE sends a CA Disable flag to the eNodeB, the eNodeB deactivates the SCells
and keeps the SCells deactivated until the RRC connection for the UE is released or a
new CA Enable flag is received.
NOTE
1. When a UE detects a background service, it queries the eNodeB load by sending a Load
Information Request message to the eNodeB.
2. The eNodeB determines its load and informs the UE by sending a Load Information
Response message to the UE.
NOTE
eNodeB load can be determined by the CPU usage of the baseband processing units (BBPs),
uplink RB usage of its cells, downlink RB usage of its cells, and the average number of symbols
occupied by the physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) in its cells.
3. The UE determines whether to delay transmission or to transmit data immediately, based
on eNodeB load.
4.2.1 Benefits
Coordinated control can reduce power consumption of smartphones and provide a better user
experience. This function is applicable only to iPhones.
4.2.2 Impacts
Network Impacts
Coordinated control has the following network impacts:
l A UE requests a long DRX cycle from the network when performing sparse-packet
services (such as heartbeat packets of upper-layer applications). When non-sparse-packet
services are processed later, it takes longer for the UE to identify the service type and for
the network to reconfigure a short DRX cycle. This increases end to end (E2E)
transmission delay, and decreases the values of the following KPIs:
– User Downlink Average Throughput
– User Uplink Average Throughput
– Cell Downlink Average Throughput
– Cell Uplink Average Throughput
l The number of RRC_CONNECTED UEs decreases when UEs request fast dormancy
imposed by the network.
l If the eNodeB has configured a long DRX cycle for the UE, the number of sounding
reference signals (SRSs) received by the eNodeB within the time indicated by

aggregated bandwidth between 20 MHz and 40 MHz
(inclusive) and downlink TDD 2CC CA can reach an
aggregated bandwidth between 30 MHz and 40 MHz

CA feature, operators must select this option
regardless of whether the local cell acts as a PCell or
an SCell for a UE. This option takes effect only in
adaptive (frequency-based) configuration mode. This
option applies only to LTE FDD and LTE TDD.
CaDl3CCExtSwitch(CaDl3CCExtSwitch): indicates
whether to enable downlink 3CC CA on extended

aggregated bandwidth between 40 MHz and 60 MHz
(inclusive) only if this option is selected. To use this
CA feature, operators must select this option
regardless of whether the local cell acts as a PCell or

UeSpec ShortDr ADD LAOFD Smartph Meaning: Indicates the length of the short DRX cycle.
DrxPara xCycle UESPE -111208/ one According to 3GPP specifications, the length of a long
Group CDRXP TDLOF App- DRX cycle must be an integer multiple of that of a
ARAGR D-13140 Aware short DRX cycle. In addition, the actual value of
OUP 8 Coordin LongDrxCycle assigned to a UE may be less than the
MOD LBFD-0 ated configured value because of the impact of the SRS
UESPE 02017 Control bandwidth and TA period specified by the
CDRXP DRX TimeAlignmentTimer parameter. Therefore, the actual
ARAGR value of ShortDrxCycle assigned to a UE may be less
OUP than the configured value. This parameter applies only
to LTE FDD and LTE TDD.
