Tutorial 1 Topic: Vibration BNJ 20303 Mechanic of Machine SEMESTER 1 SESI 2020/2021

This document provides a tutorial on vibration with 10 problems involving springs and masses. Problem 1 asks students to determine the natural frequency of different vibrating systems with springs and masses. Problem 2 shows a mass-pulley-spring system and asks students to derive the displacement and natural frequency. Problem 3 asks students to determine the natural frequency of another vibrating system. The remaining problems involve deriving natural frequencies of various mechanical systems involving springs, masses, rods, and cylinders. Students are provided diagrams and asked to determine equivalent springs, draw free body diagrams, derive equations of motion, and calculate natural frequencies.

TOPIC : VIBRATION

BNJ 20303 MECHANIC OF MACHINE

SEMESTER 1 SESI 2020/2021

1. Refer Figure 1. Determine the equivalent spring stiffness and the natural frequency of the following
vibrating systems when the :
(a) Mass is suspended to a spring
(b) Mass is suspended at the bottom of two spring in series.
(c) Mass is fixed in between two springs (parallel)
(d) Mass is fixed to the midpoint of a spring
(e) Mass is fixed to a point on a bar joining free ends of two springs
Given, s1= 5 N/mm, s2 = 8 N/mm, m = 10 kg, a = 20 mm, & b = 12 mm
[Ans : 3.56 Hz, 2.79 Hz, 5.74 Hz, 7.12 Hz, 5.737 Hz]

Figure 1
2. Figure Q2 shows a mass-pulley-spring of vibration system. Springs in series and parallel
arrangement are attached to pulley 1 and pulley 2 respectively. The friction and the masses of
the pulleys are neglected.

(i) Re-draw Figure Q2 showing an equivalent spring and the displacements of this
mass-pulley-spring system

(ii) Draw the FBD for pulley 1 and pulley 2. The pulleys has a fixed length, derive
the displacement of this system.

(iii) Draw the FBD for pulley 1 and pulley 2.

(iv) The pulleys has a fixed length, derive the displacement of this system.

(v) Derive the vibration equation of motion of this system.

(vi) Calculate the natural frequency of the system if k = 100 N/m and m = 5 kg

Figure Q2

Ans : n = 2.24 rad/s

3. Determine the natural frequency of a vibrating system as shown in Figure 3

4. Figure 4 shows, a system consists of a uniform thin rod, AB having a mass of 1 kg and carries a
concentrated mass of 2.5kg at B. The rod is hinge at A and is maintained in the horizontal position
by a spring of stiffness 1.8 kN/m at C. Determine the frequency of oscillation (motion) by neglecting
the effects of the mass. (Ans : 2.01 Hz)

5. A uniform round cylinder M mass and radius R is shown by Figure 5. The mass of m is suspended
by the cable attached to the cylinder. The cylinders are prevented from rotating by the springs (K
N/m) attached to the radius r from the center of the cylinder. If the mass is shifted/pulled down
from the resting position and released, get the system's (rad / s) frequency.

6. Figure 6 shows a length of ABCD steel shaft is 1.5 m having a flywheel at its tip at A. The mass
of the wheel is 60 kg and its radius is 0.6 m. Shaft has 50 mm diameter for section AB = 0.4 m,
for BC = 0.5 m its diameter is 70 mm and for CD part = 0.6 m, its diameter is d mm. If the shaft
rigid modular is 80 GN / m and the natural system frequency is 10 Hz, determine the diameter d.
[Ans : 95.2 mm]

Figure 6
7. Figure 7 shows the lever ABC has a uniform section (I = 1/3 ml2) and masses 1.2 kg. It has a
mass of 1 kg in C. DB network is fixed on ABC and has a mass of 1 kg. It carries a mass of 1 kg
at D. The spring elasticity constant is K = 1 kN / m. Obtain the natural frequency (rad / s) of this
8. system.

8. Figure 8 shows a see-saw game with its boards stretched on O, with two palyer, left and right.
The mass of each player is 50 kg and the mass of 20 kg boards with radius at O is 1 m. Each
spring is tied 0.5 m from the O pivot. If each player sits at the end of the board and is required to
freely making one swing/vibrate is 4 seconds. Obtain the value of elasticity constant on the spring
that must be used.

If the player was increase to four (50 kg mass each), find the position of each player so that the
time of 4 seconds can be reached. (position of each pair should be equal from point O).
