COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is essentially skills-based, offering students varied opportunities to develop their four
language skills-reading, writing listening and speaking. The course materials offer a wide range
of text types [literary, discursive, descriptive and factual], followed by learner-centered
activities. The course focuses on enlarging students’ vocabulary through word building skills;
extensive practice in creative, reflective and academic writing with emphasis on the process of
writing process -prewriting, organizing, composing, revising, and editing; developing speaking
and listening skills through activities that are overtly built into the material to guide students in
their actualization of these skills. They are supported by the inclusion of the mechanics of speech
[stress, intonation, phonetics] with grammar [ proper sentence structure, punctuation marks,
prepositions] that supports these skills and facilitates in proficiency and accuracy not only in
academic but also professional field.

COURSE GOALS:

The students should be able to:


 refine their underlying attitudes, thinking processes, language skills and knowledge
within the context of language use.
 think imaginatively, logically and critically as they use and learn English.
 write about complex subjects in a letter or a creative nonfiction.
 edit for appropriate style, including attention to word choice, sentence structure,
punctuation, and spelling.
 develop skills for oral presentation with good verbal, visual, and multimedia materials as
necessary, in individual and/or collaborative projects, as appropriate.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After taking this course the students will be able to:

 Read an English paragraph and answer questions to demonstrate their understanding.


 Read a logical and analytical problem described in English and respond to the queries to
reflect their comprehension.
 Read and summarize short and long scripts in the form of articles, extracts and research
papers.
 Read and analyze a variety of sentences for accurate comprehension of the provided text.
 Write a paragraph expressing their understanding of the topic.
 Skim and scan long texts for comprehension and precision.
 Organize and systemize thoughts while writing descriptive scripts
( i-e letter writing and reflective writing).
 Develop interest in intensive and extensive readings.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

In this course, the students are expected to:


• Attend all class sessions for requisite number of hours and actively
participate in all class activities.
• Complete all assignments in time
• Respect and benefit from the criticism offered by the instructor and peers by
revising the work
• Take unannounced/ pop quizzes
• Make use of a dictionary, take notes, and raise questions in reading assignments
• Fully participate in class discussions and help in fostering a discourse
community by listening to the peers’ views and articulating their own in
effective manner.

TEACHING-LEARNING METHODOLOGY:
Transparent Language online and Learning Management System will be used to improve
learning outcomes through Declaratively Accelerated Blended Learning (DABL) methodology.
English development exercises, talk show, seminar, group discussion, lectures, reading material,
handouts, reference books, accuracy and fluency exercises, projects and research works will be
used for support.
