Critical reflection:
I decided to choose the poem “Mirror “by Sylvia Plath, because I feel like this genration
specifically teenagers my age, older or younger have this obsession into looking at the mirror
24/7, trying to see their insecurities, but still expecting the mirror to have some magical
transformation, expecting something good to come out of it. I myself, can personally relate to
this because I do it to myself on a daily basis. This poem talks about its existence and its owner
who grows older as the mirror watches. The mirror is embodied - that is, it is blessed with
human characteristics. It can perceive repetitiveness, remarking on the consistency of the
divider that it reflects more often than not. Further, while it doesn't offer good judgment, it can
notice and comprehend its owner (the woman) as she struggles with the truth of maturing. In
spite of the fact that the speaker is a mirror, the subjects are time and appearance. The lady
battles with the deficiency of her excellence, conceding every day that she is becoming more
established. In spite of the fact that the lady incidentally deludes herself with the
complimenting "liars" candlelight and moonlight, she consistently gets back to the mirror for
reality. The lady needs the mirror to give her an unbiased, unadulterated impression of self,
despite the fact that it is frequently discomfiting, causing her "tears and an agitation of hands."
I have created a storyboard that consists of six images that I think resembles and reflects the
poem and tells a story of the relationship between the mirror and its owner. I decided to start
of my storyboard by adding a picture of a little girl looking into the mirror in (Image 1). I think
it’s effective because my storyboard starts off with a young girl starting to acknowledge her
insecurities because she realizes everything has somehow gone horribly wrong. Under that
picture I have put the quote “Whatever you see I swallow immediately”. Meaning that the
mirror has a mouth that can absorb the whole image as soon as it captures it. The mirror is
describing itself like it’s some magically creature. Next, I decided to add a picture of a mirror in
(Image 2) and added a bubble text saying, “Can I be honest with you?”. The reason to why I
think adding this quote says a lot more than just adding a picture of a mirror because the young
girl will have so many fake opinions and unrealistic expectations from other sources like filters,
makeup, face tunning and so much more. So, the mirror is trying to intend that it will be honest
with her at all times no matter what the circumstances are, without any judgement. I personally
feel like the tiny details adds so much more to the story and makes it clearer. Under that
picture I have decided to choose the quote “I’m not cruel, only truthful---” meaning that the
mirror does not want its owner thinking it hurting their feelings or being bitter but only being
honest for the best in order for its owner not to get hurt or lied to and thinking that there
something they are not. I, then added an image of a girl looking at her acne scars in (Image 3),
and added a quote saying, “NO YOUR LYING!!!!!!”, because she is denying those allegations. I
supported that image by using the quote, “It is pink, with speckles, I have looked at it for so
long.” Even though the original analysis of this quote is not about acne or pimples I, personally
saw it in that aspect. Most girls my age have acne scars or pimples, and it is like pink speckles,
with that saying a lot of girls look into the mirror denying or not accepting the fact of this stage
of puberty and the mirror does look at it for a long time. To continue the story, I added an
image of a comparison of an original picture VS the same image with face tunning in (Image 4). I
think this is one of the best ways to show that girls are so insecure of showing people their
flaws and insecurities, because of the backlash they get and how it’s not normalized in our daily
world. The best quote that resembles this picture from the poem is “Then she turns to those
liars, the candles or the moon”. Meaning that they don’t give the woman a precise
representation of her true appearance, compared to how the mirror sees her. Just because the
woman is satisfied by the flattering image of herself which is provided by the candlelight or
moonlight does not mean she won’t go back to the mirror. Now that she went to those liars
and realized it’s something she’s not, she goes back to her realizable source the mirror, in
(Image 5) you can see that she is crying Infront of the mirror and it’s reflecting a mask, which I
think is very effective, because she trying to show her a message. I decided to add a bubble text
with a quote from the poem, because it’s a first-person message from the mirror saying “She
rewards me with tears and agitation of hands” meaning that the woman does not appreciate
what the mirror is showing her and is not grateful for the mirror’s faithfulness. The mirror does
not like that she is coming back to it, with it being wrongfully rewarded for being honest.
Instead of seeing the woman being satisfied with her reflections she comes back crying. Lastly, I
finish off the story with an Image of a women drowning in her insecurities in (Image 6), the
insecurities she had when she was young and carried it with her till this day. I supported this
image with a quote saying “In me she had drowned a young girl, and in me and old woman”
meaning that she has hates her appearance from the day she started having an obsession at
looking in the mirror and dragging these insecurities as she grew up, and the mirror watching it
all happen.
