Types of Bearings

A bearing is a mechanical component that supports loads and allows motion. There are two main types of bearings: ball bearings with spherical elements and roller bearings with cylindrical elements. These bearings can experience axial or radial loads. Ball and roller bearings are further classified into several sub-types based on their design and applications, including deep groove, self-aligning, tapered roller, and needle roller bearings. Bearing housings support and protect bearings while retaining lubricant.

BEARINGS:

A bearing is a mechanical element used for bearing the load. A bearing may experience two
types of loads, namely;

1. Axial loads
2. Radial loads

TYPES OF BEARINGS:
On the basis of inner assembly to support the load, there are two types of bearings, namely;

1. Ball Bearing: Bearings that consist of Spherical elements.

2. Roller Bearing: Bearings that consist of Cylindrical, Tapered or similar shaped elements.

TYPES OF BEARINGS:
Ball and Roller bearings are further classified. A bird’s eye view of such classification is
presented below:

SUB-TYPES OF BALL BEARINGS:

A brief explanation of the types of ball bearings is given below:

1. Deep-Groove Ball Bearings:

This is the most widely used type of a bearing. They can support
both a radial load and a limited axial (or thrust) load. Deep-groove ball
bearings are great for handling:

1. Heavy loads
2. Fast operating speeds

2. Self-Aligning Ball Bearings:

The bearings, as the name suggests, are self-aligning, used for

applications where mis-alignments, shaft deflections and housing
deformations can cause disruptions.

Self-aligning ball bearings have low minimum load

requirements that makes them suitable for low- to medium-sized
loads.

3. Angular Contact Ball Bearing

The bearings having large contact angles can support heavier

thrust loads and thus angular contact ball bearings serves the purpose
of supporting a radial load along with a one-directional axial load or
heavy thrust loads depending on the contact angle magnitude.

4. Thrust Ball Bearing:

They are designed to accommodate axial loads only and must

not be subjected to any radial load. Thrust ball bearings are classified
into those with flat seats or aligning seats depending on the shape of
the outer ring seat (housing washer).

SUB-TYPES OF ROLLER BEARINGS:

A brief explanation of the types of roller bearings is given below:

1. Tapered Roller Bearing

Tapered Roller Bearings have tapered raceways in the inner

and outer rings with conical rollers arranged between them. Tapered
roller bearings can absorb high radial and axial forces in one
direction.

2. Spherical Roller Bearing

Spherical roller bearings utilize spherical rollers that allow them

to support heavy loads. They are suitable for absorbing high radial
loads and moderate axial loads. They can also compensate for the mis-
alignment between the housing and the shaft.

3. Cylindrical Roller Bearings

Cylindrical Roller Bearings use line contact between the rolling

elements and the raceways, which optimizes the distribution of
stress factors at the point of contact.

This arrangement means that cylindrical roller bearings have a

very high radial load rating. Depending on the design, they may
also be able to transmit limited amounts of axial loads

4. Needle Roller Bearings

Needle Roller Bearings are a special type of cylindrical roller

bearing that contain long, thin rolling elements, known as needle
rollers.

Needle roller bearings have a high load rating and are only
suitable for radial forces. They are suitable for machine applications
where we have a limited space to place the bearing.

BEARING HOUSING UNITS
Bearing housings support the bearings, protect them from contaminants while keeping in
lubricant, and can also house monitoring equipment.

UCP 200 series

• Cast Iron housing with grease fitting.
• The bearing is usually fixed to the shaft by means of two set
screws in the extended portion of the inner ring.

UCF 200 series

• Cast Iron housing with grease fitting.
• Standard duty four bolt flange bearing with wide inner ring
with two set screws.

UCT 200 series

• Cast Iron Bearing Housing Unit.
• They are typically used for conveyor roller tension systems.
