Understanding Past Perfect Tense

The past perfect tense expresses an activity that was completed before another past activity or time. It is formed using had plus the past participle of the main verb. The past perfect is used to show that one event happened before another in the past. It is not always necessary if other contextual clues make the time relationship clear, such as using words like "before" or "after".
