New signals
coming from India
India has ambitious objectives for expanding solar energy. The
government plans to increase photovoltaic output by a factor of
30 by 2022, to a total of 100 gigawatts. The state of Maharashtra
has also committed to a determined energy policy: By 2020, the
Maharashtra government intends to install an additional 7.5GW
of photovoltaic power. This policy provides the backdrop for

event. As in the previous year, the Intersolar India Conference
will be held in parallel with the exhibition. The first conference
day sheds light on current market developments. Both the
exhibition and the conference take place at the Bombay India’s Largest Exhibition and

GAME CHANGER:
Merkel-Modi Summit

Six months is not considered a long period in geo-politics. But, it has been in case of India and Germany.
In April this year Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Hannover Messe promoting Make in
India with an eye to get Germany industry for his ambitious 175 Giga Watt (GW) renewable energy
target. Almost six months down the line German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be in Delhi in October
with her senior cabinet colleagues to finalise an array of collaborations in the green energy sector. Her
visit marking 10 years of India-Germany Energy Forum (IGEF) will also showcase the way historic
partnership between the two rising global powers has cemented in the last six months with several
rounds of high level meeting.
Germany had excelled in renewable energy especially solar in the last quarter of the century emerging
as one of the greenest country in the world. India under Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, had opted for a

similar sustainable growth pathway now an attraction for global investors including Germans.
India can learn from German expertise in renewable energy to meet PM Modi’s ambitious RE target.
In return, India will provide a unique investment opportunity to German companies to take benefit of
Modi’s Make in India programme.
Merkel-Modi summit in New Delhi is expected to be historic as it would be a win-win for both the

The Energiewende: A

Germany’s energy transition is usually thought of in terms of energy and

Is energy turnaround a
job-creating machine?
By 2050, Germany plans to reduce its CO2 emissions
by 40 per cent compared to 1990 levels. The trade
unions in Germany are committed to ensuring that
these goals are achieved. Many desirable, new “green
jobs” are often mentioned in this context. But is the
energy turnaround really a “job-creating machine”?
And what will be the quality of these new jobs?
Stefan Körzell explains

another welcome side effect of falling prices.
In Germany the energy turnaround is
having an effect on the labour market. And
the growth is impressive: thanks to the
construction and installation of renewable
energy facilities, the number of “green jobs” has
risen from 225,000 in 2006 to approximately
400,000 in 2012. At first glance this is a truly
unique success. However, the situation is a
little more complicated because an energy
turnaround doesn’t simply mean modifying
electricity supplies by adding renewable
sources. It’s also about restructuring the entire

l The solar industry in Germany has

been one of the big winners in the boom in
renewable energies since the early 2000s.
Between 2006 and 2012, employment in this
sector has jumped from 40,000 to 114,000
jobs. Since 2013, the number began to drop,
however, because the solar industry in
Germany has proved to be uncompetitive

Successful PV market launch

– experiences from Germany
Solar power has become an important part of German
power generation: 6 per cent was the amount of solar
power in the gross electricity consumption for 2014.
By the end of 2014, more than 1.5 million PV systems
with a capacity of 38.2 GW were installed in Germany,
which generated 34.9 TWh solar electricity in 2014 and
reduced CO2 emissions. Gerhard Stryi-Hipp explains
