Design Furrow Irrigation System For Cotton Crop Grown at A Farm at Mettu in Light Sandy Loam Soil For The Following Data

The document provides information to design a furrow irrigation system for a cotton crop in Mettu, Ethiopia. It includes soil properties like available moisture holding capacity of 10 cm/m and effective root zone depth of 90 cm. It also provides the infiltration rate equation and measured values of water advance and recession for a border irrigation system. The goals are to determine the furrow dimensions, inflow discharge, cutoff time and calculate the water application and storage efficiencies given the net irrigation depth of 4 cm.

1.

Design furrow irrigation system for cotton crop grown at a farm at Mettu in light
sandy loam soil for the following data;
 Available moisture holding capacity of the soil (AMHC)=10 cm/m
 Irrigation to be done at 45% MAD
 The effective crop root zone depth was 90 cm
 The filled was levelled along width but had 0.15% slope along the length
 Manning roughness coefficient=0.1
The water infiltration rate of the field soil may be expressed as
I= 0.12t0.75 + 0.7

Where I= cumulative infiltration in cm and t= time in min

I. Determine the furrow length, width, inflow discharge

II. Time of cut-off
2. The measured value of water advance and recession for a 20m wide border laid at 0.2% slope with inflow discharge equal to 30lit/sec are

given in the following table. Measured values of water advance and recession.

Distance of water advance, x in m 0 40 80 120 140 180 220

Time of water advance, tx in min 0 13.5 29.5 48.2 59.4 84 113.5

Time of water recession, tr in min 113.5 126.7 141 152.7 155.9 161.9 168.5

Water infiltration rate of the soil may be expressed

0.35
I= 8.5t
Where I =cumulative depth of water infiltration in mm and t= time in min
The desired depth of irrigation (net depth of irrigation) was 4cm. Neglect time of
depletion (vertical recession) calculate
i. Water application efficiency
ii. Water storage efficiency
