1.04 REFERENCES

A. The referred codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these
standards and the text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.

B. The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever

1.05 DEFINITIONS

A. bird screen: Wire mesh used to prevent birds from entering the building through
ventilators and louvers.

B. curb: Raised flashing around a roof accessory to provide water tightness at the roof
opening.

C. damper: A baffle used to open or close the throat of ventilators.

D. dome: A roof with a partial-spherical shape.

E. flashing: Components used to seal the roof system at areas where the roof covering
is interrupted or terminated. For example, pipes, curbs, walls, etc. all have special
components that, when correctly installed, will help prevent moisture entry into the
roof system or building.

F. galvanized steel: Steel that is coated with zinc to aid in corrosion resistance.
Galvanize steel for use in roofing should be G-90 hot-dipped galvanized.

G. hatch: An opening in a deck; floor or roof. The usual purpose is to provide access
from inside the building.

H. ridge: The highest point on the roof of the building which describes a horizontal line
running the length of the building.

I. sheet: A thin, flat rolled metal product having mill or cut edges.

J. skylight: A transparent or translucent item that is designed to admit light and set
over a curbed opening in the roof.

K. vent: An opening or device used to permit air or vapors to exit an enclosed structure.

L. ventilator: An accessory, usually used on the roof that allows air to pass through.

1.06 SUBMITTALS

A. The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions of
SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:

1. Product Data

a) Provide manufacturer’s drawings, rough-in diagrams, specifications, and


installation instructions for each accessory required.

b) Show on transmittal form that copy of information has been transmitted


to the installer of each item.

2. Shop Drawings

a) Shop Drawings indicating material profile, jointing details, fastening


methods, and installation details.

b) Fabrication and/or installation shall not proceed until after approval of


Shop Drawing from the Royal Commission.

3. Samples

a) Samples of each typical accessory item with required finish shall be


submitted to the Royal Commission, prior to application for approval.

4. Quality Control Submittals

a) Documented experience of Contractor’s site supervisors.

b) Certificates for all elements indicated showing compliance with


referenced standards and requirements of the Royal Commission.

c) Records and reports of Contractor’s internal Quality Control.

d) Records and reports of Contractor’s external Quality Control.

1.07 QUALITY CONTROL

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with
SECTION 01450.

1. Qualification of Manufacturers

a) Products used in the work of this Section shall be produced by


manufacturers engaged in this work, with a history of successful
production acceptable to the Royal Commission.

2. Qualification of Installers

a) Adequate number of skilled workmen shall be used, who are thoroughly


trained and experienced in the necessary crafts, and who are familiar
with the specified requirements and methods needed for proper
performance of work.

b) The Contractor’s site supervisors shall have knowledge of referenced


standards, and at least 5 years of documented experience.

1.08 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full


accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the
following:

1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

a) Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

2. Royal Commission Regulations

a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.

3. Contractor

a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the Royal


Commission.

B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be
employed throughout.

1.09 JOB CONDITIONS

A. Installation of roof accessories shall be coordinated with roofing and flashing, to


achieve the best possible integration of work and resulting in permanent
waterproofed construction.

1.10 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following
requirements:

1. Materials shall be delivered to site originally packed by manufacturer.

2. Materials shall be protected during delivery to comply with manufacturer’s


directions.

3. Damaged materials shall be replaced at Contractor’s cost.

4. Materials for roof accessory shall be stored at site in an adequate manner to


prevent twisting, bending and abrasion, and it shall be ensured that the
storage stays dry and properly ventilated.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.

2.02 MATERIALS

A. Galvanized Steel

1. Galvanized sheet steel shall comply with ASTM A653M, 275 g/m2 (G-90)
commercial steel. Minimum thickness shall be 0.6 mm, unless otherwise
indicated. Grade 275, structural quality, where indicated or as required for
strength.

B. Aluminum

1. Sheet

a) Aluminum sheet shall comply with ASTM B209M for alclad alloy
3005H25 or alloy and temper required to suit forming operations, with
mill finish, unless otherwise indicated.

b) Minimum thickness shall be 0.80 mm.

2. Extrusions

a) Extruded aluminum shall comply with ASTM B221M alloy 6063-T52 or


alloy and temper required to suit structural and finishes requirements,
with mill finish, unless otherwise indicated.

b) Minimum thickness shall be 0.80 mm.

C. Stainless Steel

1. Stainless steel sheet shall comply with ASTM A167, Type 304; minimum
thickness of 0.40 mm. Pattern shall be provided and finished, as indicated.

D. Copper

1. Copper sheet shall comply with ASTM B370, cold rolled, minimum thickness of
0.50 mm, natural or lacquer finished, as indicated.

E. Aluminum-Zinc Alloy-Coated Steel Sheet

1. Aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel sheet shall comply with ASTM A792M with
Class AZ-150 coating, structural quality, Grade 275, or as required for
strength.

F. Plastic Sheet

1. Acrylic

a) Thermoformable, cell-cast or continuous cast acrylic (methacrylate)


complying with ASTM D4802, Category A-1 or A-2, Type UVA
containing ultraviolet absorber, with smooth or polished Finish 1, unless
otherwise indicated.

2. Polycarbonate

a) Thermoformable, monolithic extruded polycarbonate sheets, burglar-


resistance rated UL 972, with an average impact strength of 850 J/m of
width when tested according to ASTM D256, Method A (Izod).

G. Insulation

1. Insulation shall be as per manufacturer’s standard, rigid or semirigid glass fiber


board, complying with ASTM C612 Class 1 or 2, and minimum thickness as
indicated.

H. Wood Nailers

1. Wood nailers shall be softwood lumber, pressure treated with airborne


preservatives for aboveground use, complying with AWPA C2; not less than
38 mm thick.

I. Fasteners

1. Fasteners shall be of same metal as metals being fastened, or non-magnetic


stainless steel or other non-corrosive metal as recommended by manufacturer.
Finish of exposed fasteners shall be matched with finish of material being
fastened. Fastener heads shall be non-removable.

J. Gaskets

1. Gaskets shall be as per manufacturer’s standard, tubular or fingered design of


neoprene, EPDM, or PVC; or flat design of foam rubber, sponge neoprene, or
cork.

K. Bituminous Coating

1. Bituminous coating shall be in accordance with SSPC-Paint 12, solvent-type


bituminous mastic, nominally free of sulfur and containing no asbestos fibers,
compounded for 0.38 mm (15 mil) dry film thickness per coating.

L. Sealants

1. Sealants shall be acrylic, silicon, polyurethane or polysulfide based sealants,


unless otherwise indicated, shall be as specified in SECTION 07920.

M. Roofing Cement

1. Roofing cement shall comply with ASTM D4586, non-asbestos, fibrated

asphalt cement designed for trowel application or other adhesive compatible


with roofing system.

N. Asphalt Coating

1. Asphalt protective coating shall comply with ASTM D1187, Type I, quick
setting.

O. Finish

1. Prime-Painted Finish

a) Manufacturer’s standard exterior galvanized steel primer, and as


specified in SECTION 09910.

2. Baked-Enamel Finish

a) Manufacturer’s standard 2-coat thermocured system.

b) Color and gloss shall be as selected from manufacturer’s full range.

3. High-Performance Organic Coating Finish

a) Flouropolymer, 2 or 3-coat system, with topcoats containing not less


than 70% polyvinylidene fluoride resin by weight; complying with
AAMA 621 for galvanized steel and AAMA 620 for aluminum.

b) Color and gloss shall be as selected from manufacturer’s full range.

4. Clear Anodic Finish

a) Class I coating complying with AAMA 607.1.

5. Color Anodic Finish

a) Class I coating complying with AAMA 606.1 or 608.1.

b) Color shall be as selected from full range of industry colors and


densities.

2.03 FABRICATION

A. General

1. Manufacturer’s standard products shall be provided except as otherwise


indicated, and custom fabricated work shall comply with applicable
recommendations and details of the SMACNA.

B. Plastic Skylight Units

1. Acrylic plastic domes shall be provided of not less than 6 mm thick, glazed into
metal framing, with provision for expansion of the plastic sheet and drainage of

condensation to the exterior; prepared for mounting and anchorage as


indicated.

2. Color

a) Colorless transparent sheets, OR

b) Tinted transparent sheets of bronze or gray color, OR

c) White obscure sheets with not less than 50% light transmittance.

3. Inside Domes

a) Inside skylights of colorless transparent acrylic sheets shall be provided,


and glazed with exterior domes to form double domes with integral air
spaces.

4. Inside and exterior domes shall be hermetically sealed at edges, with clean dry
air or gas between sheets.

5. Ceiling Domes

a) Where indicated, provide manufacturer’s standard ceiling dome unit of


white obscure plastic sheet with not less than 50% light transmittance,
and with standard trim and hardware for removal.

6. Framing

a) Framing shall be as per manufacturer’s standard extruded aluminum,


not less than 1.6 mm thick for primary framing members.

7. Framing and Curbs

a) Framing and curbs shall be as per manufacturer’s standard extruded


aluminum framing with integral curb walls, not less than 1.6 mm thick for
primary framing and curb members, and shall be prepared to receive
roofing and flashing.

b) Curb walls shall be insulated with not less than 25 mm of manufacturer’s


standard rigid board type insulation, between metal faces to form
double-wall curb construction.

8. Well Liner

a) Well liner shall be as per manufacturer’s standard sheet metal, primed


for paint finish.

C. Roof Hatches

1. General

a) Roof Hatches shall be framed with minimum 225 mm high, integral-curb,


double-wall construction with insulation, formed cants and cap flashing

(roofing counterflashing), with welded or sealed mechanical corner


joints. Double-wall cover (lid) construction shall be provided with 25 mm
thick insulation core. Gasket shall be provided and equipped with
corrosion resistant or hot-dip galvanized hardware including pintle
hinges, hold-open devices, interior padlock hasps, and both interior and
exterior latch handles.
1) Single-Leaf Personnel Hatches
(a) Size
(i) As indicated.
2) Double-Leaf Equipment Hatches
(a) Size
(i) 1830 by 2440 mm or as indicated.

2. Curb

a) Integral steel curb shall be of minimum 2 mm galvanized steel (G-90),


with minimum 25 mm rigid glass fiber or foam insulation and shall have
integral cap flashing and extended flange for mounting.

b) Integral aluminum curb shall be of minimum 3 mm aluminum, anodized,


with minimum 25 mm rigid glass fiber or foam insulation, and shall have
integral cap flashing and appropriate extended flange for mounting.

3. Cover

a) Flush steel cover shall be of minimum 2 mm galvanized steel (G-90),


with minimum 25 mm rigid glass fiber or foam insulation, steel interior
liner of minimum 0.6 mm galvanized sheet steel, and continuous
neoprene or vinyl gasket to provide a weatherproof seal.

b) Flush aluminum cover shall be of minimum 3 mm aluminum, anodized,


with minimum 25 mm rigid glass fiber or foam insulation, aluminum
interior liner of minimum 1 mm mill-finish aluminum, and continuous
neoprene or vinyl gasket to provide a weatherproof seal.

c) Skylight cover shall be single or double lined as indicated. Double lined


skylight shall have minimum 12 mm airspace between the two panes.
Skylights shall be fabricated from polycarbonate according to shape,
color and pattern indicated; design shall be for a minimum live load of
1.5 kPa; a continuous neoprene or vinyl gasket shall provide a
weatherproof seal. The external face shall have a UV-protection of
minimum 50 microns.

4. Hardware

a) Compression spring operator with shock absorber.

b) Steel manual pull handle for interior and exterior operation.

c) Steel hold open arm with grip handle for easy release.

d) Heavy duty type hinges.

D. Heat and Smoke Vent Units

1. General

a) Automatically operated roof vents for heat and smoke shall be


constructed to operate (open) without power source that could be
interrupted during a fire. Custom fabricate units only to extent necessary
to comply with indicated dimensions and other special requirements.

2. Live Load and Uplift

a) Heat and smoke roof vents shall be fabricated to withstand a minimum


0.50 kPa external live load and 1.4 kPa uplift.

3. Regulatory Requirements

a) Heat and smoke roof vents shall comply with provisions of the following:
1) UL 793, for construction and performance of automatically
operated roof vents for heat and smoke.
2) NFPA 204M, for heat and smoke vent design constraints,
operation, size, and location.

4. Heat and Smoke Vent Compliance

a) Units shall be provided that have been tested, listed, or approved as


follows:
1) Construction/operation shall be UL listed or FM approved.
2) Fire resistance of lids shall be UL Class A rating.

5. Framing

a) Framing shall be with manufacturer’s standard welded or sealed


mechanical corner joints, including cap flashing (roofing
counterflashing):
1) Material
(a) Material shall be formed sheet, extruded aluminum, hot-dip
galvanized, aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel sheet or
manufacturer’s standard.
2) Unit Support
(a) Support shall be mounted on separate curbs or double-wall
integral curb with 25 mm insulation, of height indicated or, if
not indicated, for mounting with height minimum 225 mm
above roof membrane.
(b) Formed cants shall be provided and base profile
coordinated with roof type and insulation thickness.
3) Sloping Roofs

(a) Where slope of roof deck exceeds 1:48, curbs shall be


fabricated with height tapered to match slope to level tops
of units.

6. Hatch-Type Units

a) Units shall be equipped with unit support, lid, lid gaskets, automatic self-
lifting mechanisms, UL-listed fusible links rated at 71°C or other heat or
smoke sensitive release devices, as indicated, and hardware including
hinges, hold-open devices, and independent manual-release devices for
inside and outside operation of covers.
1) When release is actuated, cover will open against 0.50 kPa wind
load and lock in position.
2) Single or Double-Leaf Lid
(a) Covers with 25 mm integral insulation; material and finish
matching framing.

7. Dome-Type Units

a) Units shall be gravity-opened, shrink-back and drop-out, acrylic or PVC


sheet, dome unit with 99°C activation. Glazing system shall be provided
for easy replacement of activated domes and drainage of condensation
to exterior.

b) Color
1) Single-Dome Color
(a) Colorless, white, gray or bronze.
2) Outer Double-Dome Color
(a) Colorless, white, gray or bronze.
3) Inner Double-Dome Color
(a) Colorless, white, gray or bronze.

E. Relief Vent

1. Low-Profile Gravity Ventilators

a) Sizes, style, and profile shall be as indicated, which will develop a


gravity air-flow of not less than 90 m/min. (300 ft/min.) for 8 km/h
(5 mph) wind, 11°C (20°F) temperature difference, and 6 m (20 ft.)
stack height.
1) Material
(a) Galvanized steel, OR
(b) Aluminum sheet or extrusion, OR
(c) Stainless steel AISI Type 302/304.
2) Finish
(a) Finishes shall be as specified in par. 2.02 O.

3) Bird Screens
(a) Bird screens shall be square mesh 13 mm; with opening
size made with 1.6 mm diameter stainless steel wire.
4) Insect Screens
(a) Insect screen shall be mesh with opening size of 1.5 by
1.1 mm; made with 0.30 mm diameter, anodized aluminum
wire in removable, rewirable frames.
5) Manual Dampers
(a) Dampers shall be designed for operation from floor directly
below ventilator unit.
6) Roof Curb Construction
(a) Curb-mount units designed for installing 38 mm wood
curbs.
(b) Self-flashing units with integral self-supporting double-wall
aluminum curb, enclosing minimum 25 mm thick, glass fiber
board insulation (or equivalent), and with minimum 75 mm
roof flanges.

2. Louvered Penthouse Gravity Ventilators

a) Ventilator shall have weatherproof extruded-aluminum louvered walls


with mitered or boxed corner construction, sheet aluminum cover (roof),
and 25 mm insulation adhesively applied on underside. Extruded-
aluminum base and cap flashing shall be provided for mounting on
curbs that are not integral with units.
1) Finish
(a) Finishes shall be as specified in par. 2.02 O.
2) Bird Screens
(a) Bird screen shall be square mesh with opening size of
13 mm; made with 1.6 mm diameter aluminum, in
removable aluminum U-frames.
3) Insect Screens
(a) Insect screen shall be mesh with opening size of 1.5 by
1.1 mm; made with 0.30 mm diameter, anodized aluminum
wire in removable aluminum frames, with vinyl spline
inserts for screen replacement.
4) Manual Dampers
(a) Dampers shall be designed for operation from floor directly
below ventilator unit.

F. Ridge Vents

1. General

a) Ventilating ridge cap with ventilating mesh, providing a minimum net free
area of 380 cm2/m.

2. Aluminum Ridge Cap

a) Cap shall be fabricated from sheet aluminum with baffles to prevent rain
entering, and with weep holes to allow water to drain to roof. Required
splice plates and end caps shall be provided.

b) Finishes shall be as specified in par. 2.02 O.

3. Plastic Ridge Cap

a) Cap shall be high-density polypropylene or other UV-stabilized plastic,


designed to be installed under shingles at ridge.

G. Prefabricated Curb/Support Units

1. General

a) Units shall be capable of supporting superimposed live and dead loads,


including equipment loads and other construction to be supported.
Dimensions shall be coordinated with equipment to be supported.
1) Preservative-treated wood nailers shall be provided at tops of
units, and formed flange at perimeter bottom for mounting to roof.
2) On ribbed or fluted metal roofs, flange shall be formed at
perimeter bottom to conform to roof profile.
3) Units shall be fabricated to a minimum height of 200 mm, unless
otherwise indicated.
4) Where slope of roof deck exceeds 1:48, support units shall be
fabricated with height tapered to match slope to level tops of units.

2. Curb/Support Units

a) Curb/support units shall be provided of the type, style, height and


opening size (if any) as shown; fabricated from sheet steel with welded
joints, followed up with hot-dip zinc coating.

b) Loading
1) Manufacturer’s heavy duty units shall be provided, designed to
support the loading indicated, and fabricated from not less than
1.9 mm (14 gage) steel sheet, OR
2) Manufacturer’s standard duty units shall be provided, designed to
support the loading indicated, and fabricated from not less than
1.21 mm (18 gage) steel sheet.

c) Base of units shall be formed in the profile indicated, prepared to receive


roofing and flashing.

d) Insulation
1) Insulation shall be not less than 38 mm thick rigid board type
glass fiber insulation, inside structural support walls of curb units.

e) Nailers
1) Pressure-treated wood nailers, not less than 38 mm thick and of
the width indicated (unit width if not otherwise indicated) as the
top plate of each unit, anchored to metal framing unit. Provide
waterborne AWLPB LP-2 treatment.

f) Metal cap flashing (counterflashing) shall be provided with each


curb/support unit, formed to match unit and to cover roof flashing not
less than 75 mm vertically. Materials shall be as indicated below:
1) 1.21 mm (18 gage) zinc-coated steel, OR
2) 0.45 mm (26 gage) stainless steel, OR
3) 450 g lead-coated copper.

g) Top surface of units located on sloping decks shall be leveled, by


tapering the metal fabrication; or for low slopes, by tapering and
increasing the thickness of wood nailers.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. The Contractor shall:

1. Verify that deck, curbs, roof membrane, base flashing, and other items
affecting work of this Section are in place and positioned correctly.

2. Correct conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the work.

3. Verify that materials and prefabricated items to be used for work comply with
requirements in specifications and schedules.

4. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been


corrected.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. General

1. Installation of roof accessories shall be coordinated with installation of roof


deck, roof insulation, flashing, roofing membranes, penetrations, equipment,
and other construction, to ensure that combined elements are waterproofed
and weathertight.

2. Roof accessories shall be anchored securely to supporting structural


substrates, such that they are capable of withstanding lateral and thermal
stresses, and inward and outward loading pressures.

B. Roof accessory items shall be installed according to construction details in NRCA’s


“Roofing and Waterproofing Manual,” unless otherwise indicated.

C. Separation

1. Metal shall be separated from incompatible metal or corrosive substrates,


including wood, by coating concealed surfaces, at locations of contact, with
bituminous coating or providing other permanent separation, minimum
0.38 mm (15 mils).

D. Thermal Expansion

1. Thermal expansion shall be provided in the installation of continuous-run


accessory items, wherever the run is more than 4.5 m in length.

E. Flange Seals

1. Unless otherwise indicated, flanges of accessory units shall be set in a thick


bed of roofing cement to form seal. On sloping decks, flanges shall be shingled
with other work for proper water shed.

F. Cap Flashing

1. Where required as component of accessory, cap flashing shall be installed to


provide waterproof overlap with roofing or roofing flashing (as counterflashing).
Overlap shall be sealed with thick bead of mastic sealant.

G. Adjusting

1. Roof hatch hardware shall be adjusted to operate freely and so that cover will
operate without binding, close tightly at perimeter, and latch securely.

H. Operational Units

1. Units shall be test-operated with operable components. Joints and hardware


shall be cleaned and lubricated, and adjusted for proper operation.

I. Roof Insulation Vent Spacing

1. Vents shall be spaced uniformly to provide not less than one vent per 74 m2 of
roof area. Do not penetrate the vapor barrier (if any).

J. Heat and Smoke Vents

1. Vents shall be located, installed, and tested according to NFPA 204M.

3.03 PROTECTION

A. Protection of Aluminum

1. Protection for aluminum against galvanic action shall be provided wherever


dissimilar materials are in contact, by painting the contact surfaces of the
dissimilar material with 2 coats of asphalt coating (complete coverage), or by
separating the contact surfaces with a preformed neoprene tape having
pressure sensitive coating on one side.

2. Aluminum in contact with wood, concrete or masonry, or other absorptive


materials, that may become repeatedly wet, shall be painted with 2 coats of
asphalt coating.

B. Roof accessories shall be protected from damage during installation, and after
completion of work from subsequent construction.

C. Protection or surveillance shall be provided to ensure that roof accessory units will be
without deterioration or damage at the time of final acceptance.

3.04 CLEANING

A. Exposed surfaces shall be cleaned according to manufacturer’s written instructions.


Damaged metal coatings shall be touched-up.

B. Surfaces or roof accessories shall be cleaned as required to prevent deterioration

and uneven weathering.

C. Flashings shall be cleaned from any on-site soldering and soiling. Special care shall
be taken not to soil adjacent finished construction.
