What is being symbolized by the “scent of apples?”

The scent of apples symbolizes the feeling of homesickness from own country. The loneliness for
being alone and far away from his homeland. Loneliness is one of the most damaging emotions a person
can experience. It is a nuanced and sometimes negative emotional reaction to loneliness. It denotes a
feeling of being isolated. It is a time when one feels depressed whether they are emotionally or mentally
apart from their loved ones. He feels alone or disconnected from the rest of the planet, cut off from whom
he wishes to communicate.

How does the literary text, explicitly or allegorically, represent aspects of colonial oppression?

An allegory is a fictional technique in which a character, setting, or circumstance is used to

convey a larger message regarding real-world problems and occurrences. The story shows the real-life
situations in every Filipino on which the apple just like at the bible it represents temptation and Mario's
previous unethical existence. The story's message is that it is man's basic instinct that pushes him towards
survival. Still, nonetheless, he must remember that society wants him to conform to its standards.

What does the text reveal about the operations of cultural difference - the ways in which race, class,
cultural beliefs, and customs combine to form individual identity - in shaping our perceptions of
ourselves, others, and the world in which we live?

As we go in different places we somehow experienced the culture shock for we are not
familiarize with their customs and beliefs and that what was happened to the writer. But the good thing is
that he proudly share to the people what characteristics a Filipino possessed. The writer never forgets the
place where he was born and he still practice the traditions that he was used to and he share or tell it to
others.

What is the theme of the story?

The story's focus is the sense of loss and loneliness that many immigrants experience. They may
be overcome with a constant feeling of longing for their home country, but they may also be certain that
they may not be able to return, at least not anytime soon. Around the same time, aspects of the modern
world, such as the fragrance of apples that can only be found in America, are unusual and not always
friendly or familiar. The idea is about how first generation immigrants feel a sense of deprivation and
yearn for a bond to their past lives, even though they have made a life for themselves in the modern
world.
