CHEM 403L Module 5 - Post-Laboratory Questions

This document provides an overview of a module on qualitative analysis of carbohydrates. The module objectives are to understand carbohydrate structure, digestion, and impact on blood sugar. Students will learn color reaction tests to characterize carbohydrates and perform a Benedict's test on unknown solutions to identify sugars. The module includes virtual simulations, videos, and readings on carbohydrate tests. Post-lab questions require students to explain test principles, complete tables comparing reagent colors and carbohydrate detections, and identify specific carbohydrates using qualitative tests.

MODULE

5 CHEM 403L CHEMICAL BIOLOGY III – BIOMOLECULES

Qualitative Analysis of Carbohydrates

At the end of the module, the students must be able to:

1. describe the molecular structure of sugars and polysaccharides;
2. understand digestion and appreciate the complexity of the human body;
3. experiment with different foods and measure their impact on the blood sugar level;
4. identify the different color reaction tests necessary to characterize the
structural composition of the carbohydrates;
5. provide the underlying principle involved in each qualitative test of carbohydrates;
and
6. perform a Benedict test on four unknown solutions to test for the presence and
relative concentration of simple sugars.
