A technical tour for a day was organized for the students of civil engineering department by Structure
engineering department of our college Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya under IEI. Students gathered
at the college campus at around 8:30 am for registration and total 25 students registered themselves for
the visit. We had 4 faculties from structure department along with us.
Ahmedabad Gandhinagar Metro - MEGA

First of all we went to the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project site-phase 1 which was in the stretch
of 6 km. The construction of the site was under J. Kumar pvt. ltd. The financing was done by
state and central government. JICA of Japan has funded it with 4870 crores for the entire stretch
of the Metro Link Express For Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) Company Ltd. On the
casting yard we first met the planning engineer of the site Devam Patel who was the
representative of J. kumar. He gave us the detailed information of the project regarding concrete
mix, grade of concrete, design of segment, launching of girders, station details. He also briefed
us about the entire process from the manufacturing to the placement of the precast U shaped
boxes including its curing. The cement for superstructure and substructure was OPC and PPC
respectively. The concrete used was M 50 and M 35 respectively. We observed the lifting of
boxes with the heavy cranes of capacity upto 75 tons and the launching process by the
launching girders with high safety precision. We also observed the miscellaneous works of
parapet and plumbing. They also cleared our doubts pertaining all round works with great zeal.

Brief about the Project

Ahmedabad – Gandhinagar Metro rail project is being promoted with the objective of providing
safe, fast and eco-friendly transportation services to the public at affordable rates while
simultaneously reducing the congestion on the roads. The metro rail project will promote
integration with AMTS, BRTS, Railways and other modes of public transit system.
 Very responsive State Government and progressive leadership
 Relatively flat terrain
 Use of state of the art technology
 Minimum land acquisition
 Majority elevated track

MEGA is committed to deliver World Class state-of-art technology most cost efficient
metro within the shortest time span possible in the country.
The proposed metro will have majorly elevated structure, ballast-less tracks, air-conditioned
coaches, GPS based rail tracking system, train destination indicators & stations with support
infrastructure like automated fare collection, parking facilities, etc.

On 4th February 2010, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) namely, Metro-Link Express for
Gandhinagar & Ahmedabad (MEGA) Company Ltd. was incorporated by the Government of
Gujarat to implement Metro Rail Project under the Companies Act, 1956.
The company was restructured and with effect from 20th March 2015 the Company has been
converted as a 50: 50 SPV of Government of India and Government of Gujarat.

Construction of Helipad Building at V. S. Hospital, Ahmedabad

Afterwards we moved further towards over second stop-VS hospital. We had our lunch before
the introductory session. The project is carried out under Patel Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. The
senior project manager C. C. Patel briefed us about the details. The structure was a steel
structure with 2 basements and 17 floors up to height of 78 meters having the facility of air
ambulance. The construction is carried out according to the new norms of the government
making it an eco- friendly structure. The materials used were AAC blocks with chemical
binders. They had installed a sound fire resisting system. In this project, the engineers replaced
the conventional building techniques with the new ones. Students had a mesmerizing view of
the river from the helipad.
Brief about the Project

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation wanted to develop their medical campus in Ellisbridge area
and build a multi-speciality hospital catering to current and future needs. Ramboll has been
engaged to be the structural consultant for the project and we are working with Archimedes
Consultants in designing this facility, which will have 1450-beds across general, speciality and
super speciality wards.
This multi-storey hospital building will also have accommodation for resident doctors and
nursing staff along with auditorium and classrooms for educational and training purposes. The
building will have two basements for parking and 16 floors above. There is a helipad at the
roof to support the operation of air ambulances as well.
Ramboll developed the structural scheme for the basement portion completely with RCC
elements (walls, slabs, columns) and proposed the superstructure in structural steel with RCC
core walls. This approach was chosen to meet the tight timelines of the project as well as the
need to have clear spans up to 11.5m with full flexibility for floor layouts in the future.
The building was modelled completely in ETABS and analyzed for all loads cases and
combinations. The superstructure was designed with steel columns encased in concrete for fire
protection supporting the steel floor framing with composite decks. This reduced the depths of
the steel beams allowing for better planning of services and interior facilities in the floor. We
developed the tender package and assisted the clients in evaluation and selection of the
appropriate contractors for the execution of the concrete basement and the steel superstructure.
