Perseverance, hardworking, won’t give up , determined! Grit is the ability to persevere

towards a goal in the face of discomfort or obstacles. There are many examples of how grit is

used in the poem, “Mother to Son,” by langston hughes and in the Ted Talk video, Grit the power

of perseverance and passion, by Angela Duckworth. I have also used grit to get through a

difficult time in life.

In the poem “Mother to Son,” there are few examples of grit like when she said that “life

ain't been no crystal stair case,” or when she said “ i've been a-climbing and reaching` and

turning corners.”I picked these quotes because the first one she said that life in not great ,but you

can't stop now. She also said “ i've been a-climbing and reaching` and turning corners.” which

means that you also need to forgive and forget which helps you move on with life and allows

you to have grit to carry on. She is only saying to have grit because in the long run he will have a

better life.

In the TED Talk video, Grit The Power of Perseverance and Passion, by Angela

Duckworth, many examples were given that show that grit is more important than someone's IQ.

Angela also ran a specific test that showed most successful people had a lot of grit and

determination than a CEO or a high IQ. I think she said this to inspire others to have grit and to

try to be successful. I also think she brought up the tests to show that this is possible and you
don't have to be a genius. I found this was a great paragraph because it doesn't give examples of

grit, but instead talks about what grit is and how it can affect you.

In your life and my life there are examples of grit or perseverance. For example, in my

life I have experienced grit when I was playing gaelic football and someone came up behind me

pushing me in the back causing me to fall face first onto the ground. I also had to give a

presentation that I didn't know what I was doing, but I was able to keep going and give the

presentation anyway. I believe that when I had to keep going with my presentation it showed grit

because I was able to complete it and learn that I had to prepare in the future and not do things

last minute. I also had grit when I fell on my face and everyone thought it was funny, but I got

up and kept playing helping my team win the game. I realize that life has its ups and downs.

In life we need grit to find success. In the poem,“Mother to Son”, there were many

examples of grit. In Angela Duckworth”, Grit, The Power of Perseverance,” She found that

those with grit succeeded more than those who didn’t have any. Grit helped me shape who I am

today and will continue to shape the person who I am in the future.
