from provided sources to answer a question.

Objective
➢ Students will be able to identify what makes them unique by individually creating a self-
portrait with 95% accuracy.
➢ Students will be able to summarize and identify the theme of the story through partner
discussion while using critical thinking skills with 90% accuracy.

Materials Needed
➢ The book The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson
➢ Writing utensil: Markers, crayons, and colored pencils
➢ White Drawing paper (Self-portraits)
➢ Lined paper (To write)

Procedure
1. Introduce: Show the book The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson. Then ask
students, “Have you ever walked into a room full of people who seemed different than
you? (suggest, maybe it was the first day of school); how did it make you feel? Quickly
with your neighbor, discuss those feelings and how they changed over time.
2. Read: Teacher will begin to read book aloud to entire class.
3. Discuss: Students will engage in the five questions and have time to discuss each
question with a partner. Then students will discuss their answers with the class.
▪ Question 1 – Why does the girl on the cover feel that her story is not as great as the
stories her classmates are sharing?
▪ Question 2 – How does Rigoberto’s teacher turn around how he is feeling about his
name?

▪ Question 3 – How does the girl say we must overcome our fear of being different?
Explain what you think she means.
▪ Question 4 – Pick and child from the story; why does that child feel like he or she
doesn’t fit in?
▪ Question 5 – Is there a character from the book you relate to? Explain why.

Activities
➢ Students will individually create a self-portrait illustrating what makes them unique.
Students will use white drawing paper, color pencils, markers, and crayons.
➢ Students will write a 5-7 sentence self-to-text connection to the book, sharing what
happened in the book and the connection they made. They will then present their
connection with the class.

Evaluation
➢ Teacher will check student portraits and text connection for accuracy.
