Greg Tang’s games are really great. There are Deanna
multiple options on this site. They are based on
conceptual understanding and fluency. My http://gregtangmath.com/games
favourite is Kakooma. The students do not
realize how much computation practice they are
doing.
2048! Grade 4/5 and up. Combine numbers of the Ashlee
same tile to double/square numbers. Try to reach
the milestones of 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048. https://play2048.co/
Students will quickly learn squares and strategy
and can also work towards the next milestone.
My students love to play.
I also recently stumbled upon another website https://poki.com/en/math
which offers several different ones. I tried Line
Up: Dots! which is a thinking game where you
have to connect the dots in the correct number
order. It will give hints if you aren’t sure how to do
it. This is certainly a great game to teach problem
solving skills.
Mathplayground has a number of engaging Lisa
games that students enjoy at a variety of levels.
I like the game I’ve shared in the next column https://www.mathplayground.com/number_bonds
called “Number Bonds” I teach my kids to play it _II.html
starting with “making ten” (although you can use
other numbers to add up to) Making ten is an Math Playground general site:
important concept to master at this age, and this https://www.mathplayground.com/
is a fun, puzzle-game way to practice it. (Then you can choose your grade)
I love ‘Estimation 180’ because it gets my grade Monika Schultz
4/5 students thinking about the world around
them, estimating various amounts of real-life https://estimation180.com/days/
items they recognize. There is so much
discussion around the referent and making an
educated guess. Over time, they have become
quite good at estimating things. I also like that we
estimate in all units of measurement.
Just found this website - great thinking games. I Monica S.
think they would be higher level. I would try some https://www.transum.org/Software/Puzzles/
with my 6/7’s but may be better suited for high
school. There are some higher level puzzles on
this site.
Mathisfun is more appropriate for elementary Monica S.
students (grade 4-7) and has a wide variety of https://www.mathsisfun.com/games/games-eleme
games and puzzles. You can pick from a variety ntary-html5.html
of concepts such as measurement, algebra,
numbers and geometry. Primary to intermediate.
Brain bashers is a website that has MANY new Jason T
logic style puzzles that are generated every day.
Each puzzle has levels, so the whole class could https://brainbashers.com/
be working on the same game, but different
versions of it. Printable and playable online.
Set game is another daily logic game I like to use, Jason T
just for fun and logic practice and pattern
recognition. GIven 12 tiles, match three using the https://www.setgame.com/set/puzzle
rules outlined. Good class game, can project on
screen and let kids think.
Math games are an integral part of my Steve M.
elementary math program. I enjoy finding new
math games and adapting them to meet my Here is the link to the article “8 Reasons to Start
students’ needs and support the curricular Using Math Games For Review”:
competencies. In searching today for new https://mrelementarymath.com/math-games-8-be
possible games to post here I came across a blog nefits/
page that listed 11 favourite math sites/games.
Rather than posting a link to one or two games I And
am posting a link to the blog site itself so you will
have easy access to 11 different math sites and Here is the link to the blog post that has links to
games. The blog has an informative description 11 Free Math Sites:
of each site so you will know quickly which ones https://blog.reallygoodstuff.com/11-free-math-sites
you wish to visit. But additionally, I am posting a -for-kids/
link to a great article that lists “8 reasons to start
using math games for review”. It’s a great article
that lists the multiple benefits of including math
games in learning. I will be including a link in my
own blog to this article so parents will understand
the benefits of game play.

All Grades Mavis Wen
This is a free online game for students. It is a https://www.prodigygame.com
character building game. To progress in the
game, the students need to defeat monsters.
They do this by answering math questions
correctly. If the answer is incorrect, they won’t be
able to attack the monster. This is a great thing to
do with your class when there is extra time or
allow students to complete their work early to
play! They are also able to access this at home!
Once set up, it is very easy for students go on
and play! I would use it as a reward (eg. if the
entire class worked really hard, I will book the
computer lab out for 30 minutes to let them play
Prodigy).
IXL is a paid program but has math and language Stephanie
arts components and allows students to work IXL - IXL | Math and English Language Arts
through at their own pace. It also is a great Practice
resource for parents who would like to help their
kids and do work at home. Math Games, Books, and Videos for Kids -
Funbrain
Funbrain - this is a free resource that can be used
as an additional math activity or for early finishers
as well as an activity alone for additional practice.
PBS Kids Math has a lot of fun games for Stacey
younger students grade k-3. There are critical https://pbskids.org/games/math
thinking games, strategy, patterning, building etc.
Most of the students are having so much fun they https://www.mathletics.com/blog/educators/launch
don’t realize they are working on math skills. -into-the-multiverse/
My school has a Mathletics subscription and one
of my classes favorite games in Multiverse. It is a
game where the students can practice their
multiplication facts while finding resources to
build space stations.
The games on this site can be connected to Sabina
Google classroom, which we use in our school for https://www.mathplayground.com/grade_1_game
communicating with the parents. The “ addition s.html
snake “ is very interesting and engages children, I
use this on my smart board screen when the
children have finished their work and we get to https://www.splashlearn.com
play this.It also works great for reviewing and
practicing the addition and the children tend to
finish work faster to get to play.
This week started with the subtraction concept
and “ Ducky subtraction” is great for initial start up
of the concept.
THe games on Splash learn are great too,
although I haven’t used in the classroom, but last
year we used to take extra classes after school
for struggling students and then I had a couple of
them and we used to use these games as
practice and of course as an incentive for great
work.
Lots of fun math games covering different math Jacquie Cable
skills, including word problems, logic, memory
games, number games, puzzles, and strategy https://www.coolmathgames.com/
games. They are not levelled by grade or age,
which I think is a good thing, then kids won’t know
they’re facing a challenge beyond their typical
age or grade, they’ll just try to figure it out
because it’s fun! Also, games don’t include many
instructions beyond one simple description of the
objective, so players need to experiment and use
intuition to figure out how to play.
A variety of games for primary learners. They Ian Parkinson
cover basic facts and number sense concepts.
The games try to tie into students interests such
as various sports (baseball, football, car racing), https://www.funbrain.com/math-zone
or more imaginary things such as protecting cake
from a cake monster.
A retro site that has lots of activities and games to Vanessa Jones
engage students. It includes math history, which
can help engage students who may not be http://mathcentral.uregina.ca/index.php
engaged with math alone, and links to videos
about careers in math.
