Procedure For Handling, Storage & Transportations of Bare & Coated Pipes

This document provides guidelines for handling, storing, and transporting bare and coated pipes. It outlines responsibilities and describes procedures for loading, unloading, stacking, and transporting pipes safely using appropriate equipment to prevent damage. Pipes must be handled carefully and stored on skids, rails or sand rows with protective barriers to avoid damage from falling or water. Transportation is by trailer loaded in a balanced manner not exceeding a maximum number of layers or weight limit. Safety precautions and proper equipment are required during all stages.

1.0 Scope:
This procedure provides guidelines/ instructions for ensuring the proper Handling, Storage &
Transportations of Bare & Coated pipes in a safe manner.
2.0 Applicable Code/ References:
As per JSL standard practices & API RP 5L1/ 5LW, S-04-02-005, Rev.2, & S-04-02-006, Rev.1 and
SOW No.:0047-01-04-06-001-SW.

3.0 Responsibility:
Head (Dispatch & QC) shall be responsible for the maintenance and implementation of this
procedure.
4.0 Equipment & Accessories
Mobile Cranes, EOT Cranes, Trailer, PPE’s etc.

5.0 Procedure: Description / General Requirements

5.1 Handling of Pipes (inside at plant)
5.1.1 The Pipe movement inside the plant (bare pipe mill)
Rolling of the pipes on the Level Beds & racks ensuring that there are no projections on any of
the contact surfaces, which may cause damage on the pipe.
Hydraulically or pneumatically operated jacks.
Conveyors running along the full length of the plant.
EOT/ Mobile crane having slings/ nylon belts.
Lifting equipment shall be approved by GAIL / GAIL’s authorized representative. Wire ropes shall
not be used in direct contact to lift pipes

5.1.2 Handling of Bare/ Coated Pipes (at Coating Plant)

Pipes are loaded / unloaded to trailer by overhead EOT crane or mobile crane equipped with
slings/ nylon belts/ hooks and Care is taken to avoid any kind of rolling of pipes during handling.
Inside the plants, pipes are moves through hydraulically or pneumatically operated jacks and
electrically operated Conveyors.
Portion of the hook & jaw clamping to bevelled edge of pipe shall be lined/ padded & coated with
Teflon/ rubber etc. Handling hooks shall be rubber coated so as to avoid any impact damage to
pipe coating, shoe of hooks that is jaw clamping to bevelled edges shall be Teflon padded.
The bevelled end of pipe shall be protected by metallic bevel protector. Always when
pipes are handled by hook / crane.
Wire slings/ Webbing slings covered with soft materials shall be used.
Throughout the work, the pipes shall be handled in such a way as to avoid dents, cuts, cracks
and other damage including bevel damage and coatings.

5.2 Storage of Bare & Coated Pipes at Plant Yard

Pipes shall be stacked either on rails/skids / sand rows / brick wall / saw dust / husk bags or
wooden sleepers. In case of Sand rows, covered with LDPE / plastic sheets.
Pipes shall always be stacked completely clear from the ground so that bottom row of pipe
remains free from any surface water & rain water will not collect inside the pipes.
Stack shall be prepared in a way to ensure stability and to avoid pipes from falling down.

PROCEDURE FOR HANDLING, Doc. No : PROC-HST-20-100
STORAGE, TRANSPORTATIONS OF Rev No : 01
Location: Nanakapaya/ Samaghogha BARE & COATED PIPES Date : 09-OCT-2020

Pipes shall be stockpiled in a limited number of layers so that damages to pipe as well as
coating are avoided in accordance with API RP 5L1
All equipment, tools, tackles, trucks/ trailers, devices required for loading, transportation, hauling,
handling, unloading, stacking, and storage of bare/coated pipes.
All equipment should be in good working condition and shall have valid documents.

Stacking pattern at JSL stock yard shall be as follow:

Width of sand rows/ skids: 100mm minimum
Height of sand rows / skids: 150mm minimum
Distance between two sand rows/ skids: 8m minimum

5.3 Transportations of Bare & Coated Pipes

5.3.1 Loading/ Unloading
Pipe shall be loaded and unloaded using cranes equipped spreader bars / shackles/ suitable
slings/ hooks / nylon belts and soft faced lifting shoe, such as Teflon or PE.
Usually pipes are directly placed onto trailer by crane to form a truck/Trailer load adequate to
the size and capacity of truck.
The wooden beam / sleepers / saddles / bolsters may be positioned onto trailer so as to take
load of pipes. And tighten by Chain cover with rubber or nylon belts.
5.3.2 Bolsters (Sleepers or Saddles)
Trailer should be positioned with appropriate “bolsters” designed to hold bottom of
pipe in the correct position.
Bolsters may be Pre- formed or shaped bolsters as per diameter size of the pipe or timber
bearing strips fitted with timber wedges each side of the pipe which is of an appropriate size to
hold the pipe in position when transport is fully loaded.
Pipes shall be stacked on trailer as considering maximum load stress calculated as per API
RP 5L1
6.0 Precautions :
Care shall be taken that bare and coated pipes shall not get damaged at the time of handling,
storage & transportations.
During the pipes movements in plant, ensure that all stoppers, lifting jacks, conveyors should
work properly.
Trucks and all other conveyances shall be cleaned of debris or any substance that might
damage the pipe/ coating during loading, transport, handling and load out.
Persons engaged in handling, storage & transportation should use appropriate PPE’s and
follow all safety norms.

7.0 Stacking of Bare/ Coated Pipes:

Transportation of line pipe by truck to this specification shall comply with the laws and
regulations of authorities having the jurisdiction over transportation of goods in all jurisdictions
between the point of loading and location of destination
The maximum number of tiers/ Layers for stacking of bare/ coated pipes at trailer & yard shall
be used by as follow: -
