Assignment 1

1. The safe load for a 2.5m x 2.5m square footing founded at a depth of 1.5m in loose sand with an angle of shearing resistance of 25 degrees and unit weight of 16 kN/m^3 is calculated using Terzaghi's analysis with a factor of safety of 3 against shear failure. 2. The safe bearing capacity of a 1m wide strip footing located 0.8m below ground in soil with unit weight 18 kN/m^3, cohesion 30 kN/m^2, and angle of friction 20 degrees is calculated using Terzaghi's analysis with a factor of safety of 3, assuming the water table is at the base of

ASSIGNMENT 1

1. A square footing 2.5 by 2.5m is built in a homogeneous bed of loose san of unit weight
16kN/m3 and the angle of shearing resistance is 250. The depth of the base of footing is
1.5m below ground surface. Calculate safe load that can be carried by footing with a
factor of safety 3 against complete shear failure. Assume that the soil fails by local shear.
Use Terzaghi’s analysis.

10 9.6 2.7 1.2
15 12.9 4.4 2.5
20 17.7 7.4 5

2. A strip footing, 1m wide at its base is located at a depth of 0.8m below ground surface.
The properties of foundation soil are unit weight = 18kN/m 3, C = 30kN/m2, angle of
friction 20 and FOS = 3. Determine the safe bearing capacity, if the water table is located
at the base of the footing. Assume that the soil fails by local shear. Use Terzaghi’s
analysis.
Φ NC Nq Nr
10 9.6 2.7 1.2
15 12.9 4.4 2.5
20 17.7 7.4 5

3. A rectangular footing 2 X 3 m rests on a C-Φ Soil, with its base at 1.5m below ground
surface. The soil has following parameters: unit weight = 18kN/m 3, C = 10kN/m2, angle
of friction 30. Calculate
i. Ultimate bearing Capacity
ii. Net Ultimate bearing Capacity
iii. Safe bearing capacity using FOS = 3. Use Terzaghi’s Analysis. Take N c=37.2,
Nq= 22.5 and Nr= 19.7.
4. A square footing located at a depth of 1.3m below the ground has to carry a safe load of
800kN. Find the size of the footing if the desired FOS is 3. The soil has the following
properties: Void Ratio = 0.55, Degree of Saturation = 50% , Specific Gravity = 2.67, C =
10kN/m2 and angle of friction 30. Use Terzaghi’s Analysis. Take Nc=37.2, Nq= 22.5 and
Nr= 19.7.
5. Determine the depth at which a circular footing of 2m diameter be founded to provide a
factor of safety of 3, if it has to carry a safe load of 1600kN. The foundation soil has unit
weight = 18kN/m3, C = 10kN/m2 and angle of friction 30. Use Terzaghi’s Analysis. Take
Nc=37.2, Nq= 22.5 and Nr= 19.7.
