A/B Behavioral Pattern Scale (ABBPS)

Introduction
In general, personality refers to the quality of an individual, or characteristic configuration
of behavioral response pattern that each person evolves as a reflection of her/her individual
adjustment to life.
Personality is the fundamental to the study of psychology. The major system evolved by
psychiatrists and psychologist since Sigmund Freud to explain human mental and behavioral
process can be considered theories of personality. These theories generally provide way of
describing personal individual differences, characteristics and behavior, establish an overall
framework for organizing a wide range of information and address such issues as individual
differences, personality development from birth through adulthood and the causes, nature
and treatment of psychological disorder.
Personality defines as a whole person rather than just as a biological description of hair,
weight, eyes, color of skin, appearance etc. It is a total quality of an individual as it is
shown in habits of thinking in her behavior and the characteristics combination of the
behavior distinguish one individual from another giving each a unique personality and
identify.
Overall personality is the sum total of the typical way of thinking and feeling that makes
each person unique.
Behavior is the range of actions and mannerisms made by individuals, organism, system, or
artificial entities in conjunction with themselves or their environment, which includes the
other systems or organisms around as well as the (inanimate) physical environment. It is the
response of the system or organism to various stimuli or inputs, whether internal or external,
conscious or subconscious, overt or covert, and voluntary or involuntary. Human behavior is
believed to be influenced by the endocrine system and the nervous system. It is most
commonly believed that complexity in the behavior of an organism is correlated to the
complexity of its nervous system. Generally, organisms with more complex nervous systems
have a greater capacity to learn new responses and thus adjust their behavior.
Divisions of Personality
A simple division of preference or personality type is into Type A and Type B which is
based broadly on anxiety and stress levels.

i. Type-A Personality
ii. Type-B Personality

i. Type-A Personality
Type-A personality generally lives at a higher stress level. They enjoy achievement of goals,
with greater enjoyment in achieving of more difficult goals. They are thus constantly
working hard to achieve these. They find it difficult to stop, even when they have achieved
goals. They feel the pressure of time, constantly working flat out.    They are highly
competitive and will, if necessary create competition. They hate failure and will work hard
to avoid it. They are generally pretty fit and often well-educated (a result of their anxiety).

ii. Type-B Personality

Type B personality generally lives at a lower stress level. They work steadily, enjoying
achievement but not becoming stressed when they are not achieved. When faced with
competition, they do not mind loosing and either enjoy the game or back down. They may
be creative and enjoying exploring ideas and concepts. They are often reflective, thinking
about the outer and inner worlds.

behaves or shows the type A behavioral factor most of the time.

Conclusion
The Type A individuals want to win every ‘game’ in life, speak fast, act fast, see goals and
challenges everywhere, manifest impatient gestures and interrupt when faced with slower events.
These persons cannot wait in queues, are superficially interested in the aesthetic aspects of life
and they have tendency to measure success in terms of material gains and a number rather than
quality of goals achieved.
In the Type A pattern, emotions like hostility and anger play an important role. Type A persons
experience strong stress reactions in environments where pressure is high, but they also search
for these environments; it can be said that they are addicted to such environments.
