Aṣṭa-Kālīya-Līlā of Śrī Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu

“Kṛṣṇa’s nitya-līlā [eternal pastimes] are of two types, which are always meditated upon by devotees.
(1) Santara nitya-līlā are the transcendental pastimes performed in the material world at intervals, with a beginning and end, but which repeat eternally in one material universe after
another. Santara nitya-līlā includes Kṛṣṇa’s birth, His growth through childhood and youth, the killing of different kinds of demons, and His journey to and residence in Mathurā and
Dvārakā.
(2) Nirantara nitya-līlā is performed incessantly, in eight time divisions throughout the entire day and night. These sports are motivated by Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s pure loving affection for the
residents of Vraja, and the sweet pastimes don’t stop for a second. These non-stop pastimes of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa are commonly known as the aṣṭa-kālīya-līlā.” (Gītā-mālā)
The aṣṭa-kālīya līlā [eternally flowing eight-fold daily transcendental pastimes] of Rādhā-Śyāmasundara in the spiritual world have been beautifully described in Govinda Līlāmṛta,
Kṛṣṇanika Kaumūdi, Kṛṣṇa Bhavanāmṛta, and Sankalpa kalpa-druma. Gauḍiyā Vaiṣṇavas regularly study these līlā- granthas in order to remember and serve in the blissful daily
pastimes of Rādhā-Mādhava. Besides describing the eternal pastimes of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa, ācāryas have written books, bhajanas, and padāvalli kīrtans glorifying the aṣṭa-kālīya līlā of
Śrī Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu.
The most famous bhajanas which Gauḍiyā Vaiṣṇavas still relish today are those written by Lord Gaurahari’s intimate associates like Rāmānanda Rāya, Vasudeva, Govinda and Mādhava
Ghosh, Murāri Gupta, Narahari Sarakara Ṭhākura, Śivānanda Sena, Paramānanda, Yadunandana and Ᾱnanta Ᾱcārya. The songs of these eternally liberated mahājanas provide accurate
and authorized accounts of Lord Gaurāṅga’s daily activities in the spiritual world of Śrī Navadvīpa Dhāma. Later Vaiṣṇava mahājana poets, such as Śrīla Locana Dāsa, Narottama Dāsa
Ṭhākura, Śrīnivāsa Ᾱcārya Prabhu, Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartīpāda and His disciple Śrī Kṛṣṇa Dāsa, wrote abundantly about the eight-fold daily pastimes of Lord Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu.
Ṭhākura Bhaktivinoda also wrote many wonderful bhajanas glorifying Lord Gaurāṅga. ISKCON devotees regularly sing the Gaura-ārati by Ṭhākura Bhaktivinoda which depicts an eternal
evening pastime of Lord Gaurāṅga. During pradośa-līlā [8:24-10:48 P.M.] Lord Gaurāṅga and His intimate devotees meet in Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura’s home for ārati and kīrtana-vilāsa.
“All glories, all glories to the beautiful ārati ceremony of Lord Gauracandra in a grove on the banks of the Jāhnavī river! This Gaura-ārati is attracting the minds of all living entities in the
universe. Lord Nityānanda stands on Gaurāṅga’s right side and Gadādhara stands on His left. Śrī Advaita stands before Him and Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura holds an umbrella over Lord
Gaurasundara’s head.
“Gauracandra sits on a jeweled throne, while the demigods headed by Lord Brahmā perform the ārati ceremony. Narahari Sarakara and other associates fan Him with yak-tail whisks, as
Sañjaya Paṇḍita, Mukunda Daṭṭa and Vasu Ghosa sing sweet kīrtana along with the other devotees for Lord Gaurāṅga’s pleasure.
“Conch shells resound, bells clang, karatāls ring and the mṛdaṅgas play very sweetly in that kīrtana, so melodious and relishable to hear. The brilliance of Lord Gaura’s face conquers
millions upon millions of moons, and the garland of forest flowers around His neck shines. Lord Śiva, Śukadeva Gosvāmī and Nārada Muni are all there, and their voices are choked with
the ecstasy of transcendental love. Thus Bhaktivinoda envisions the glory of Lord Gauracandra.” (Gaura-ārati)
After briefly outlining Gaurāṅga’s daily pastimes in chapter twelve of Bhakti-ratnākara, Narahari Cakravartī advises that devotees should meditate upon the aṣṭa-kālīya līlā of Lord
Gaurasundara.
“My dear brothers! Give up your material plans and aspirations, and come to reside in Navadvīpa. Serve the Supreme Lord Gaurāṅga by remembering the most confidential
transcendental pastimes which He performs throughout the day and night. Then all your miseries and distresses will disappear.
“In Goloka Vṛndāvana, each one of Lord Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes within His aṣṭa-kālīya līlā inspire a particular mood. When these pastimes are relished in the mood set by Lord Gaurahari’s
nitya-līlā in Navadvīpa, one will experience the highest ecstatic prema. One who is determined to worship Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa should meditate on the aṣṭa-kālīya līlā of Lord Gaurāṅga in
Navadvīpa. If one wants to worship Lord Kṛṣṇa, but he is not submerged in the devotional mood of Lord Caitanya, he will never perceive the most confidential and esoteric truths about
Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.” (PV)
Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī, Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura, Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura and other Gauḍiyā ācāryas have written wonderful prayers describing Mahāprabhu’s aṣṭa-kālīya līlā.
