Scope and Importance of Environmental Studies

Environmental studies is a multidisciplinary field that systematically examines human interaction with the environment. It aims to solve complex environmental problems. The environment consists of four main components: the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere. Environmental studies incorporates principles from various disciplines including science, social science, engineering, and more. Its goal is to promote sustainable development and address issues like pollution, resource use, and biodiversity loss.

Scope and importance of environment studies

The term environment has been derived from a

French word “Environia” means to surround.

The word environment means surroundings, in which organisms live.

All the components of the environment are divided into two categories

1.Abiotic ( non-living) and

2.Biotic (living) environment

Environment Consist four components/ segments-

1. Atmosphere - The air surrounding the earth is called the

atmosphere

2. Hydrosphere- all the waters on the earth's surface, such as lakes and
seas, and sometimes including water over the earth's surface, such as
clouds.

3. Lithosphere - Lithosphere is the solid crust or the hard top layer of

the earth. It is made up of rocks and minerals. It is covered by a thin
layer of soil.

4. The biosphere is that part of the Earth where living things thrive and
live.

Environmental Studies is a multidisciplinary academic field which

systematically studies human interaction with the environment in the
interests of solving complex problems.
Environmental Studies brings together the principles of Sciences,
Commerce/ Economics and Social Sciences so as to solve
contemporary environmental problems.

Environmental studies deals with every issue that affects an organism.

It is essentially a multidisciplinary applied science as it seeks practical

answers to making human civilization sustainable on the earth's finite
resources. Its components include

1. Biology 2. Geology 3. Chemistry 4. Physics 5. Engineering 3 6.

Sociology 7. Health 8. Anthropology 9. Economics 10. Statistics 11.

Scope of Environmental Studies

The disciplines included in environmental education are –

Environmental sciences. Environmental engineering Environmental
management.

a) Environmental Science: It deals with the scientific study of

environmental system (air, water, soil and land), the inherent or
induced changes on organisms and the environmental damages
incurred as a result of human interaction with the environment.

b. Environmental Engineering: It deals with the study of technical

processes involved in the protection of environment from the
potentially deleterious effects of human activity and improving
the environmental quality for the health and well beings of
humans. They work to improve recycling, waste disposal, public
health, and water and air pollution control.

(c) Environmental Management It promotes due regard for physical,

social and economic environment of the enterprise or projects. It
encourages planned investment at the start of the production chain
rather than forced investment in cleaning up at the end .
An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a framework that
helps an organization achieve its environmental goals through
consistent review, evaluation, and improvement of
its environmental performance.

Scope of environmental studies can be summarized as follows

1.The study creates awareness among the people to know about

various renewable and non-renewable resources of the region.

2. It provides the knowledge about ecological systems and cause

and effect relationships.

3. It provides necessary information about biodiversity richness and

the potential dangers to the species of plants, animals and
microorganisms in the environment.

4. The study enables one to understand the causes and consequences

due to natural and main induced disasters (flood, earthquake, landslide,
cyclones etc.,) and pollutions and measures to minimize the effects.

5. It enables one to evaluate alternative responses to environmental

issues before deciding an alternative course of action.
6. The study enables environmentally literate citizens (by knowing the
environmental acts, rights, rules, legislations, etc.) to make appropriate
judgments and decisions for the protection and improvement of the
earth.

7. The study exposes the problems of over population, health, hygiene,

etc. and the role of arts, science and technology in eliminating/
minimizing the evils from the society.

8. The study tries to identify and develop appropriate and indigenous

eco-friendly skills and technologies to various environmental issues.

9. It teaches the citizens the need for sustainable utilization of resources

as these resources are inherited from our ancestors to the younger
generating without deteriorating their quality.

10. The study enables theoretical knowledge into practice and the
multiple uses of environment.

The importance’s of environmental studies are as follows:

1. To clarify modern environmental concept like how to conserve

biodiversity.

2. To know the more sustainable way of living.

3. To use natural resources more efficiently

4. To know the behaviour of organism under natural conditions.

5. To know the interrelationship between organisms in populations and

communities.
6. To aware and educate people regarding environmental issues and
problems at local, national and international levels.

7.The study enables the people to understand the complexities of the

environment and need for the people to adapt appropriate activities and
pursue sustainable development, which are harmonious with the
environment.

8.The study motivates students to get involved in community action,

and to participate in various environmental and management projects

9.Environmental studies take a multidisciplinary approach to the study

of human interactions with the natural environment. It integrates
different approaches of the humanities , social sciences, biological
sciences and physical sciences and applies these approaches to
investigate environmental concerns.

10. Environmental study is a key instrument for bringing about the

changes in the knowledge, values, behaviors and lifestyles required to
achieve sustainability and stability within and among countries.
