FTTH Trend
Wired networks have entered the F5G era. Requirements for services such as online office,
online education, VR, and 4K/8K live broadcast increase sharply, posing higher requirements
on network bandwidth.
The average bandwidth of traditional copper line services is low and inversely proportional to
the transmission distance, which cannot meet the increasing service requirements. In this
context, global operators actively promote fiber to the home (FTTH) to upgrade the
bandwidth.
Cable networks using coaxial cables have been developing for many years. In live networks,
there are massive copper site resources, bringing new opportunities for FTTH construction
and bandwidth upgrade.
Based on in-depth insight into business trends, Huawei launches the CurbPON solution to
help operators fully utilize existing site resources and quickly increase network bandwidth.
What Is CurbPON
CurbPON is a solution that reuses existing sites, optical cables, and power supply resources
on the live network to quickly deploy new devices and increase the network bandwidth. It has
two application modes, including Original Site Upgrade and OLT@Outdoor Site. Using this
solution, the bandwidth can be increased to 1 Gbit/s or higher.
Original Site Upgrade: Deploy new multi-dwelling units (MDUs) at original copper sites
to improve the copper bandwidth, and use NCE for efficient network management to
increase the bandwidth to 300 Mbit/s.
OLT@Outdoor Site: Add OLTs to the original copper sites and use the OLT+MPO+DQ
ODN+NCE suite to quickly increase the bandwidth to 1 Gbit/s or higher.
The following table lists the bandwidth improvement in Original Site Upgrade and
OLT@Outdoor Site modes.
Table 2-1 Bandwidth improvement in Original Site Upgrade and OLT@Outdoor Site modes
Benefits
Short construction period: Sites are reused and no new site needs to be acquired,
shortening the construction period.
Low construction cost: Copper lines are reused, and no trenches need to be dug to bury
cables, reducing construction costs.
Easy planning and evaluation: Fast analysis and planning can be performed based on
the network usage of existing sites.
High O&M efficiency: NCE simplifies network O&M.
3 CurbPON Solution
Features
Fast deployment
− Sites are reused, and no sites needs to be acquired.
− Existing copper cables are reused in the downstream direction of cabinets, and there
is no need to dig trenches for burying cables.
− New MDUs are added, and no board needs to be replaced.
− The existing power supply resources are used, and no new mains supply needs to be
acquired.
Easy maintenance
− NCE can manage old and new devices at the same time.
Application Scenario
In actual applications, bandwidth requirements vary with areas and user groups. If the
bandwidth requirement is lower than 300 Mbit/s, Original Site Upgrade is an ideal choice.
3.1.2 Networking
The following figure shows the networking of the Original Site Upgrade mode.
Features
One-time reconstruction and long-term bandwidth evolution: OLTs support smooth
gigabit evolution.
Precise planning
− The uNetBuilder intelligent planning tool is used to help customers analyze
reusable copper site resources, identify high-value areas, compare the TCOs of
different solutions, and select optimal network construction areas.
− Based on the map, user, and infrastructure information collected by the eSurvey
automatic survey tool, the SmartODN tool can automatically generate the ODN
network design solution using a customizable core algorithm.
Fast network construction
− The M50 cabinet adopts one-stop site construction and requires no onsite assembly.
The MA5801 is small and light, and can be installed by only one person, enabling
fast site deployment.
− The DQ ODN solution supports network-wide pre-connection and uneven splitting
for fast network construction. Downstream fibers support plug-and-play without
splicing, and image scanning can be used for quick service provisioning.
− OLTs are automatically deployed in zero touch deployment (ZTD) mode, and
software commissioning engineers do not need to visit sites or perform remote
commissioning.
Intelligent O&M
− Supports OLT ZTD, automatic device discovery, management channel
configuration, and device management by NCE to realize fast service provisioning.
− Supports cloud-based ONT authentication and automatic registration without
software commissioning to implement zero-touch provisioning (ZTP).
− Supports accurate ODN topology, visualized O&M, and fast ODN deployment.
− Supports AI analysis of big data, realizing precise fault locating and proactive O&M
and reducing user complaints.
Application Scenario
For areas with high bandwidth requirements, the OLT@Outdoor Site mode can be used to
build an all-optical network and increase the bandwidth to over 1 Gbit/s.
