Fire Fighting System: Codes and Regulations

The fire protection system for the building will include wet sprinkler systems, fire hose reels, portable extinguishers, and automatic extinguishing systems. Two fire pumps will be provided - one electric and one diesel - to pressurize the sprinkler system and supply water to fire hose reels. Water storage will be sized to operate the fire pumps for 90 minutes. Hydraulic calculations will be performed to size the water storage tank and ensure adequate water pressure is supplied to the sprinkler systems and fire hose reels.

Fire fighting System

 Codes and Regulations

The design of the fire fighting systems shall be made in accordance with the recommendations
and guidelines of the following standards and associations:
A- NFPA National Fire Protection Association.
B- Local Codes and Standards.
 General Description
The fire protection system will mainly consider the following:
 Wet sprinkler system protection will be provided throughout building, mechanical
rooms and closed parking areas.
 First aid hose reel cabinet in each fire zone. Stations will be selected to cover all areas
using 30 meters length and 32 mm diameter hose
 Landing valves 63 mm (2 1/2'') to be located at escape stairs for fire brigade usage.
 Portable dry chemical and CO2 fire extinguishers located in all floors and car park
area.
 Automatic extinguishing system (FM200) will be provided for command center, main
and floor communication rooms.
 CO2 will be provided for generator and substation rooms.
 Siamese connection will be provide and coordinated with local fire brigade.
 Two Fire pump sets will be provided. One set will be electrically operated while the
other set will be diesel operated for emergency cases.
 One Jockey pump will be provided to pressurize the sprinkler system serving the
building. Main fire and Jockey pumps will be located in the main plant room close to
the storage water tank. To prevent water stagnation, the fire water will be stored in
the same domestic water tank.

 Estimated demand
 The water demand for fire protection in the building will be calculated hydraulically and
the storage tank will be sized for 90 minutes storage.
 Fire reserve will be stored in a separate concrete tank located at basement-2.
 Fire pumps will be sized to provide 4.5 bars at the farthest fire hose reel station.
 System will be designed to have a max of 12 bar pressure at any branch serving a
sprinkler system.

 Calculations
- Main data

Type of Hazard: light for residential areas, ordinary type 2 for public areas

K factor: 5.6

- Sprinklers

Maximum coverage area per sprinkler = 130ft2 = 12.077m2

Design Area Ad= 1560ft2 (area for 12 operating sprinklers)

Design density Dd= 0.19 (NFPA 13 FIGURE 11.2.3.1.5)

Discharge Q=Ad*Dd=1560*0.19= 296.4 gpm

Operating pressure at the furthest sprinkler

Presidual = 35m

4.52 * Q1.85
P
Pressure drop due to friction losses C 1.85 * d 4.87 = 0.054 bar = 0.55m

Pressure drop due to elevation = 78m

P total = 35+ 0.55 + 78 = 113.55m ≈ 160 psi

- Fire hose cabinets

Number of stand pipes = 1 (from design drawings)

Refer to NFPA 14 5-9.3.1

Q stand pipe = 500 gpm

Refer to NFPA 14 5-7

P = 4.5 bar

H = 45m

- Pumps selection and fire water reserve

Q total = Q sprinklers + Q stand pipe = 296.4 + 500 = 796.4 gpm≈1000 gpm

Total operating head = 160 psi

Water storage shall be sufficient to operate fire water pumps for 90 minutes

Fire water storage = 1000 gpm * 90 minute = 340.65 m3 ≈ 350 m3
