Mathematics: Quarter 4: Module 2 Quartile, Decile, Percentile of Grouped Data

The document provides information about calculating measures of position such as quartiles, deciles, and percentiles for grouped data. It gives the formulas to find the quartile, decile, and percentile of grouped data. It also provides steps for solving measures of position, which include constructing a cumulative frequency column, determining the kth class, identifying the values for the variables in the formula, substituting these values into the appropriate formula, and solving. An example is shown of calculating the first quartile, seventh decile, and 70th percentile from sample grouped data on the number of subscribers of YouTubers in Marikina City.

What’s New

Consider the given situation and answer the questions that follows.
There are 50 youtubers in Marikina who are making videos that feature the
beauty of the city. Their videos help the investors to see the opportunity that
city offers. The city mayor have known about it and decided to award the top
30% of the youtubers. The criteria for the award is the number of
subscribers.

What is It

The Measures of Position for Grouped Data

In order to get the measures of position for grouped data, you need to know
the formula to be used and the steps on how to calculate it.

The formula for quartile is:

𝑘𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑏 Where:
𝑄𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + [ 4 ] ×𝑖
𝑓𝑄𝑘
𝐿𝐵 = lower boundary of the kth class
𝑁 = total frequency
The formula for decile is:
𝑐𝑓𝑏 = cumulative frequency before
𝑘𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑏 the kth class
𝐷𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + [ 10 ] ×𝑖
𝑓𝐷𝑘 𝑓𝑘 = frequency of the kth class

𝑖 = size of the class interval

The formula for percentile is:
𝑘 = nth quartile, decile or
𝑘𝑁 percentile
− 𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝑃𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + [100 ] ×𝑖
𝑓𝑃𝑘

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Steps in solving the measures of position for grouped data:

1. Construct the cumulative frequency column.

(Note: Data in frequency table may arranged in ascending or
descending order. Always start from the lowest class interval.)
2. Determine the kth class
𝑘𝑁 𝑘𝑁 𝑘𝑁
(Use : for quartile, for decile , 100 for percentile )
4 10
3. Determine the values of each of the variables in the formula.
4. Substitute the values to the formula then solve.

Example:
Determine 𝑄1, 𝐷7 , 𝑃70 using the frequency distribution below:

No. of subscribers of 50
Youtubers in Marikina City
Subscribers Youtubers
1000 - 1999 7
2000 – 2999 6
3000 – 3999 5
4000 – 4999 11
5000 – 5999 8
6000 – 6999 8
7000 – 7999 5
For 𝑄1 ,

No. of subscribers of 50 Youtubers in Marikina City

Subscribers Youtubers Cumulative frequency (𝑐𝑓)
1000 - 1999 7 7
2000 – 2999 6 13
3000 – 3999 5 18
Step 1.
4000 – 4999 11 29
5000 – 5999 8 37
6000 – 6999 8 45
7000 – 7999 5 50

Step 2. 𝑘𝑁
𝑘𝑡ℎ 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = The class interval for 𝑄1 is
4
1(50) 2000 -2999.
𝑘𝑡ℎ 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 =
4
𝑘𝑡ℎ 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 12.5
5

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Step 3. Step 4.

𝐿𝐵 = 1999.5 𝑘𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑄𝑘
𝑄𝐾 = 𝐿𝐵 + [ 4 ] ×𝑖
𝑁 = 50 𝑓𝑄𝑘

𝑐𝑓 𝑏 = 7 1(50)
−7
𝑄1 = 1999.5 + [ 4 ] × 1000
𝑓𝑄1 = 6 6

𝑖 = 1000
𝑄1 = 2916.17
𝑘 =1

Therefore, 25% of the youtubers in Marikina City has less than or equal to
2916.17 ≈ 2916 subscribers.

For 𝐷7 ,

No. of subscribers of 50 Youtubers in Marikina City

Subscribers Youtubers Cumulative frequency (𝑐𝑓)
1000 - 1999 7 7
2000 – 2999 6 13
3000 – 3999 5 18
Step 1
4000 – 4999 11 29
5000 – 5999 8 37
6000 – 6999 8 45
7000 – 7999 5 50

Step 2. Step 3.

𝑘𝑁 𝐿𝐵 = 4999.5
𝑘𝑡ℎ 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 =
10 𝑁 = 50
7(50) 𝑐𝑓𝑏 = 29
𝑘𝑡ℎ 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 =
10 𝑓𝐷7 = 8
𝑘𝑡ℎ 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 35 𝑖 = 1000
𝑘 =7
The class interval for
𝐷7 is 5000 -5999.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Step 4.

𝑘𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝐷𝐾 = 𝐿𝐵 + [ 10 ] ×𝑖
𝑓𝐷𝑘

7(50)
− 29
𝐷7 = 4999.5 + [ 10 ] × 1000
8

𝐷7 = 5749.5

Therefore, 70% of the youtubers in Marikina City have less than or equal
For 𝐷70 ,
to 5794.5 ≈ 5750 subscribers.

For 𝑃70 ,

No. of subscribers of 50 Youtubers in Marikina City

Subscribers Youtubers Cumulative frequency (𝑐𝑓)
1000 - 1999 7 7
2000 – 2999 6 13
3000 – 3999 5 18 Step 1
4000 – 4999 11 29
5000 – 5999 8 37
6000 – 6999 8 45
7000 – 7999 5 50

Step 2. Step 3.

𝑘𝑁
𝑘𝑡ℎ 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 𝐿𝐵 = 4999.5
100
𝑁 = 50
70(50)
𝑘𝑡ℎ 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 𝑐𝑓𝑏 = 29
100 𝑓𝑃70 =8
𝑘𝑡ℎ 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 35 𝑖 = 1000
𝑘 = 70
The class interval for
𝑃70 is 5000 -5999.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Step 4.

𝑘𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑘
𝑃𝐾 = 𝐿𝐵 + [100 ] ×𝑖
𝑓𝑘
70(50)
− 29
𝑃70 = 4999.5 + [ 100 ] × 1000
8

𝑃70 = 5749.5

Therefore, 70% of the youtubers in Marikina City have less than or equal to
5749.5 ≈ 5750 subscribers.

Going back to the question about Blaster, will he be awarded? Since, he has
5825 subscribers, therefore the answer is yes.
