COURSE DESCRIPTION:
“I found that I could say things with colors and shapes that I couldn’t say in any other way-
things I had no words for”. –Georgia O’Keeffe
This is a fun course that covers a wide range of art topics. It is an introductory course for both the general
interest and art major student. It will survey the nature and role of the visual arts in society through the study of art
theory, art practices, media and an overview of art history. Field trips are required. From the GWC course
description.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The Student Will:
A. Distinguish and define the role of the art elements and principles of design.
B. Identify the major art movements throughout history and the diverse cultural, economic, and scientific
forces that affected these movements.
C. Define the function of aesthetics in evaluating a work of art.
D. Define and compare the art forms and media of the visual arts.
E. Write a research paper investigating a work of art seen in person from a local museum.
The student will demonstrate through required writings, tests, and verbal communication the ability to analyze a work
of art, explain the history, influences and development of the visual arts, and apply the principles of art and design
elements in the making of a work of art. From the GWC course description.
Additionally, I want to help you foster your own, individual visual awareness and tastes. You should not only know a
little bit more about art history, like names, dates and context, but why you do or do not like a particular work of art
and how to properly articulate your thoughts. Think for yourself!
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Identify the major art movements throughout history and the diverse cultural, economic, and scientific forces that
affected these movements when comparing art forms and media of the visual arts
2. Identify a major artist and/or art movement and the function of aesthetics in evaluating a work of art.
3. Identify and choose appropriate vocabulary for Art History and Art Production.
NOTE: Some topics covered in this course are of a sensitive nature. There will be some images of nudity, discussions of
sexuality, violence, race and ethnicity. All topics will be discussed candidly and with respect.
