Chemistry Q4 - W1 - D1

The document outlines an activity to create a Cartesian Diver to explore the relationship between volume and pressure at constant temperature. It includes materials needed, step-by-step procedures for building the diver, and guide questions regarding the effects of pressure on the diver's behavior. The activity demonstrates how pressure changes affect the buoyancy of the diver in water.

ACTIVITY: A CARTESIAN DIVER

I. Objective: To design a Cartesian Diver in order to investigate the

relationship between volume and pressure at constant temperature.
II. Materials: 1.5 or 2 Liters of empty transparent plastic bottle with cap,
medicine dropper  (plastic straw and paper clip if dropper is not
available), water or any materials available at home.

III. Activity Proper:

1. Create a title of your activity: The Amazing Bottle Diver
2. Make a step by step procedures in building your Cartesian Diver.
 First cut down a straw. Next fold the straw. Then secure the end of
the straw with paper clip and put it into the water to see if it can float.
Lastly filled it with water and put the straw into the bottle.

3. Answer the guide questions.

3.1 What happens to the pressure inside the bottle as you squeeze the
bottle?
 The straw start to sink.

3.2 What happens to the dropper as you squeeze the bottle? Why?
 The dropper start sinking because the increased pressure forces
water up into the diver, compressing the air at the top of the eye
dropper. This increases the mass and density of the diver causing it
to sink.

3.3 What happens to the dropper as you release the pressure? Why?
 Releasing the squeeze decreases the pressure on the air and the
water is forced back out of the diver, lowering its density and allowing
it to float back to the top of the bottle.

4. Draw / illustrate your constructed model of Cartesian Diver below .
