Title of Research Paper: Software Project Management: The
Manager’s View
Name of the Author(S): Jaak Jurison
University/College/Company: Fordham University
Name of the Journal: Communications of The Association for
Information Systems
Date of publication: September 1999
Discipline / Specialisation of Research Paper: Information Systems

Introduction and Scope of the Study:

What is software project management? In simple terms, Software
Project Management refers to the branch of management that is
dedicated to the planning, scheduling, allocation of resources,
execution, tracking, and delivery of the software as well as web
projects.
The scope of the study is based on the managerial aspects of the
development of software projects. generally, all software
development is taken in as projects which are complex in nature, the
study covers the variation of methods that are used in the
development of the projects as well as the use of this projects in
different sectors like nature, science and military.
Management Concepts defined:
The process of achieving organizational goals through planning,
organizing, leading, and controlling the human, financial, and
information resources in an effective and efficient manner is called
management. There are key dimensions for any project management
that are Time, Cost, and performance, and recently good client
relationship is also included. This process as a whole comes under
the process known as the project life cycle that provides us with a
timeline as of when the project was commenced to the allocations of
tasks, resources, and time to its production of the end product. The
management concept is defined as to what managers do and the
roles, they play in the process of achieving the organizational goals.
Research Methodology/Tools:
A project management methodology is a set of principles that guide
the process of managing a project. The first decision you make as a
project manager is choosing a project management methodology
(PMM). The most common and useful are:
 Waterfall Method: - The most common method that is used in
project management is the waterfall method that is Sequence
One task is to be completed so that the other can begin and the
connected items add up to the deliverable project.
 Agile Method: - In simple terms, The Agile methodology
prioritizes shorter interactive cycles and more flexibility. An
Agile method is an approach in the development of software
through the collaboration of self-organizing and cross-
functional teams and their customers and users as well.
 Kanban: - Kanban is another framework that uses that agile
method but based on the team’s capacity to do work. It was
started in the 1940s and was originally the visual system of
cards that were used as a signal for the work that has been
done and what next to do. Now team members use sticky notes
and whiteboards and then move the tasks through
premeditated stages until completed.
Results / Outcome of study:
The outcome of the study was that no matter the time passed there
are certain methods and practices that are followed even today in
the process of development of a project. The process of the
development of the project starts with an idea and then through the
applications of the methodology that are available we can
commence the project and see it to its application in the real world.
The manager's work is to regulate, arrange a team, set a budget,
create a timeline from its commencement to its end. So, the result of
the study shows us about the process and the methodologies that
are used to finish a project.
Critical Discussions:
The discussion for today is about Critical Success Factors (CSF).
Successful projects are been used as a benchmark in critical success
factors for project management. CFS are the things that must go
right for a project to be successful. Therefore, special and continual
attention must be given to the project by the management for it to
be a success. CFAs are applied in various situations ranging from
information systems planning to project management. Project
managers find CFS particularly useful as most of their time is spent
on dealing with multitudes of details and putting out proverbial fires
due to which they rarely have enough time to focus on issues that
are not as urgent but are critically important on which the success of
the project is dependent. There are certain aspects that are very
important for the success of CSF that is Clearly defined objectives,
Top management support, Adequate budget, Realistic schedule,
Client/User participation, Project leadership, Project reviews, Change
control/management, Communications, and Problem solving these
all component mixed together results in the success of the project
and the CSF.
Conclusions:
Nowadays we see more and more information systems project
managers play a very vital and critical role in their respective
organization's enterprise resource planning, system implementation,
adapting to the 20th century, or leading technological advancement
beyond the field of information systems. as we advance in the future
the project management skill has become more important than ever
for career advancement. There is a high demand in the market for
experienced project managers for companies ranging from financial,
government, as well as high technology companies. Even the
education department has taken a keen interest in the field of IS
project management as the business schools have been adding
special courses in project management in their curriculum as well
giving specialization in the field of information systems giving the
students the technological as well as the managerial skills required to
handle a project. So my conclusion to this paper will be that it shows
us the methodology, the art that goes into the process of making a
raw material a finished one, from an idea to the final technology that
we use in the form of an app or software, the roles that a manager
plays so that all the things are carried out effectively and efficiently
so that end result is in a finished and working project.
