NOTES:
1) By-pass around steam block valve shall be provided if following conditions are
met:
either steam operating pressure lower than 6 barg and pipe diameter equal
to or larger than 10", or
steam operating pressure equal to or higher than 6 barg and pipe diameter
equal to or larger than 6".
2) The block valve, in the flare header, must be car seal open and the stem in
horizontal position or with minimum angle downwards.
4) External by-pass is not required if main isolating valve is provided with an internal
by-pass.

a) for all lines crossing plant battery limits (the valve on flare header shall be CSO
stem downward);
b) at spared equipment;
connections for overhead vapor lines, transfer lines, reboiler lines & side
streams draw-off
pump suction & reflux lines
vents open to atmosphere
lines from/to safety valves (see point 14.1)
j) at heat exchangers process side, only if they can be maintained during the
normal operation of the plant
I) at sampling devices
m) for preventing flow (e.g. at drains, vents, steam out points) or diverting flow
through an alternative route (e.g. by-passes)
22.4. Check valves shall be provided where necessary to prevent back flow:
a) at battery limits, for all the lines entering or leaving geographical unit (refer to fig.
21.1 ). Spectable blinds shall be installed towards plant side.
24.1. The plant shall be designed with steamout/purging connections adequate in number
and size, to enable inert flushing during startup, shutdown and maintenance operation.
24.2. Steam out connection 3" and larger shall be permanently connected to steam header
as per para 18.0.
24.3. Equipment and associated lines which will be steamed during start-up or shutdown
operations, shall be designed for thermal expansion for the higher of:
24.4. The extension of steam out in the plant will be general with the following exceptions:
Air Service
Nitrogen
Water

25.1. All the drains from equipment, lines or instruments, which for process reasons must be
piped into an open sewer or a closed system, shall be shown on PID with the indication
of the destination (oily sewer, chemical sewer, recovery system, etc... ).
26. WINTERIZING
26.2. Piping shall be designed to avoid tracing whenever possible by circulation of the fluid
within the piping.
Utility lines such as water, condensate, steam etc. where liquid may collect and freeze
during shut-down shall be designed for self-draining and provided with appropriate
drains and vents.
During non-operating periods these lines may be completely drained.
Underground piping and drains will be buried below the frost line.
Main header for the following services shall be underground:
fire water, drinking water, utility water and cooling water with the following limitations:
1. Where branch lines for single service rise from underground, block valves shall
be provided in the risers just above the ground. The following arrangement will
provide protection against freezing:
(a) A by-pass shall be provided just under the block valves, from the supply
back to the return for recirculation.
This by-pass shall be 3/4" for lines 3" and smaller, 1" for lines 4" to 8" and
1%" for lines larger than 8" to 20"; 2" for lines larger than 20".
(b) A valved drain shall be provided in the line at minimum distance above the
block valve.
(c) 1" of insulation shall be provided around the piping, from the ground up to
and including the block valves in the water risers. Dead legs longer than
500 mm shall be subject to specific analysis
(a) A by-pass shall be provided between the extreme ends of the supply and
return headers for recirculation.
(b) Block valves shall be provided at the highest points of the branch lines in a
horizontal position near to the headers. The line between the header and
the block valve shall be of minimum length.
Alternately branch lines may be treated as headers as in (a) above.
(c) Water lines for hose stations shall be insulated together with the steam line
to the hose station.
(d) Valved drains shall be provided at all low points and plugged vents at all
high points.

26.5. EQUIPMENT
1) A drum or vessel containing liquid hydrocarbon and water which may freeze shall
be protected by heat tracing and by insulating nozzles, block valves and drain
piping.
2) Exchangers and coolers containing liquids which may freeze shall have sufficient
valved drain points to insure complete drainage upon shutdown.
3) Each water cooling system associated with a pump or a compressor shall have
sufficient valved drain points to insure complete drainage upon shutdown.

NOTES:
2) 1" of insulation shall be provided around the piping, from the block valves up to
including, the by-pass, ensuring that dead legs are no longer than 500 mm
(measured from the line with flowing fluid).
27. INSTRUMENTATION
XXZZYYK
Where:
27.2. The valve installed in each instrument take-off connection shall be located as close to
vessel or line as possible.
Take-off connections, including the first block valve, shall be compatible with the line
service classification.
27.3. The take-off connection valves shall not be shown on PID, in general; for levels
instrument
corrosive fluids
extremely viscous fluids and where heat tracing will be unsatisfactory
slurries and fluidized solids.
27.5. The instrumentation located at units or Blocks B.L. will be provided as follow:
Utility Lines: as per here attached arrangements (for flare and slop headers, no
measurement).
