READING PARAMETERS FOR ORAL/SILENT READING ASSESSMENT

Kindergarten
• Phonological awareness – connecting sounds to the letters of the alphabet
• Oral language/fluency - ability to recognize and produce sounds of the language (mother
tongue)

Grade 1 and Grade 2 (Filipino/Mother Tongue and English)


• Oral Language – the ability to produce sounds of the language
• Phonological Awareness – connecting sounds to the letters of the alphabet, (recognition of
three to five letter word combinations – phonological awareness and oral fluency) – 3 to 5
letter word combinations to sentential level (one to five-word sentences of different
kinds/types)
• Grammar – letter order in relation to sounds and the letters of the alphabet, awareness of
the due arrangement of words when listening and when speaking
• Vocabulary – basic word recognition and comprehension (appropriate to grade level)
• Comprehension – ability to connect or relate experiences to what is read
or listened to (1-2 questions).
• Attitude towards language, literacy, and literature

Grade 3 (Mother Tongue/Filipino and English)


• Oral Language Fluency – the ability to produce correct sounds of the language in the
lexical (word), phrasal and sentential level.
• Grammar – ability to recognize proper arrangement of words in a sentence (syntax)
• Vocabulary – ability to recognize meaning of words in context (appropriate to grade level).
• Comprehension – ability to connect or relate experiences to what is read
or listened to (2-3 questions).
• Attitude towards language, literacy, and literature – positive orientation and the
development of love for reading

Grade 4-6 (English and Filipino)


 All of the above items
 Text ranges from 50 to 100 words
 With comprehension
 Number of questions for comprehension check is 3 to 5.

Grade 7-12 (English and Filipino)


 All of the above items
 Text ranges from 100 to 200 words for G7-10; 150 to 300 words for G11-12
 With comprehension in English
 Number of questions for comprehension check is 5 to 10
