ABSTRACT
The problem of gas leakage and fire is often encountered in our day-to-day life. LPG,
Liquified Petroleum Gas, is highly flammable gas used as fuel in heating appliances.
Leakage of this gas raises the risk of building fire, suffocation or an explosion. The
mentioned problem can be solved with the development of reliable techniques to detect
gas leakage. As soon as gas leakage will be detected, user will be notified via SMS and
call so that he/she can turn off gas valve from anywhere in his work place. The issue of
flame and fire at kitchen can be monitored with the help of fire sensor. The buzzer starts
beeping whenever fire is detected. In addition to these, it is often found that a person
forgets to book gas cylinder due to his/her busy schedule. The main aim of this paper is to
design an IOT based Smart Gas Management System that will be able to detect gas
leakage and fire. With the help of load sensor, automatic booking of a gas cylinder is also
facilitated. Notification is sent to the booking agency to book a gas cylinder whenever
load cell detects that the weight of gas cylinder has reached below a threshold value. At
the same time, user will be notified about gas cylinder going empty.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
The Internet of Things is an emerging topic of technical, social, and economic significance.
Consumer products, durable goods, cars and trucks, industrial and utility components,
sensors, and other everyday objects are being combined with Internet connectivity and
powerful data analytic capabilities that promise to transform the way we work, live, and play.
Projections for the impact of IoT on the Internet and economy are impressive, with some
anticipating as many as 100 billion connected IoT devices and a global economic impact of
more than $11 trillion by 2025.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an important topic in technology industry, policy, and
engineering circles. This technology is embodied in a wide spectrum of networked products,
systems, and sensors, which take advantage of advancements in computing power,
electronics miniaturization, and network interconnections to offer new capabilities.

The large-scale implementation of IoT devices promises to transform many aspects of

the way we live. For consumers, new IoT products like Internet-enabled appliances, home
automation components, and energy management devices are moving us toward a vision of
the “smart home’’, offering more security and energy efficiency.

IoT systems like networked vehicles, intelligent traffic systems, and sensors embedded
in roads and bridges move us closer to the idea of “smart cities’’, which help minimize
congestion and energy consumption. IoT technology offers the possibility to transform
agriculture, industry, and energy production and distribution by increasing the availability of
information along the value chain of production using networked sensors.

Condensed oil gas (LPG) is as of now the most utilized gas in our home for cooking
purposes. LPG gas is a combustible gas, whenever spilled it can make real harm life and
property. Hence it ought to be utilized in safe taking care of way and extra consideration
must be taken so as to keep any spillage conceivable. The primary highlights of LPG is that
being heavier than air, it don’t scatter effectively and may prompt suffocation when breathed
in. The spilled gases when touched off may prompt blast.
IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas), simply called as propane or butane, is highly flammable
gas that is often used as fuel for cooking purposes. Due to the flammable nature of LPG, its
leakage can cause damage to life and property. It is very important to be sure that gas leakage
has not occurred in our kitchen. LPG, being heavier than air, does not disperse easily and
leads to suffocation when inhaled. The ignition of leaked gas leads to explosion. It is also
important to be sure that kitchen has not been caught with fire. It is often found that a person
forgets to book gas cylinder due to his/her busy schedule.

The proposed topic "IOT (Internet of Things) based Smart Gas Management System"
deals with three major issues, gas leakage detection, fire detection and automatic booking of
gas cylinder. This system makes use of gas sensor, fire sensor and load cell to detect the gas
leakage, fire and continuously monitor the amount of gas in cylinder respectively. Buzzer
starts beeping on detection of gas leakage and fire. Automatic booking of gas cylinder is
facilitated by notifying booking agency to book a gas cylinder whenever load cell detects that
the weight of gas in cylinder has reached below a threshold value. User will also receive
message stating that gas in cylinder is about to get completed.

Figure 1.1 Conceptual Diagram

Department of Computer Science and Engineering, AIET 2

IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

On detection of either gas leakage or fire, user will be alerted via an SMS or a phone
call. The alert message recorded will be played back as soon as he/she receives the call.

Arduino UNO is the microcontroller used for this purpose. All the input devices such as
Gas Sensor, Fire Sensor and Load Cell along with output devices like Buzzer and LCD
Display are interfaced into it. A SIM inserted into GSM Module makes phone call and SMS;
code for which is written as AT commands. Voice Module is used to record alert message in
the form of speech. Whenever any mishap takes place, call is sent to the registered mobile
number and recorded speech is played back as soon as call is received.

1.1 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is currently the most used gas in our home for cooking
purposes. LPG gas is a flammable gas, if leaked it can cause major damage to life and
property. Therefore it should be used in safe handling manner and additional care has to be
taken in order to prevent any leakage possible. The main features of LPG is that being
heavier than air, it do not disperse easily and may lead to suffocation when inhaled. The
leaked gases when ignited may lead to explosion. The number of deaths due to the explosion
of gas cylinders has been increasing in recent years. Now a days people are having very busy
schedule and hence sometimes they forget or don’t get enough time for booking the gas from
the gas agency. So it would be much easier and helpful if there was a provision to book the
gas automatically. A major amount of gas is being wasted due to the carelessness of
consumer’s .Sometimes they forget to turn off the burner which may also could lead to
damages.

1.2 OBJECTIVE

Our proposed topic aims at detection of gas leakage and automatic controlling of gas valve.
The smart gas system which provides home safety, detects the leakage of the LPG and alerts
the consumer about the leak by a notification through by using android app through Internet
Of Things (IOT) and consumer can turn off the gas valve , from anywhere in the world. The
additional advantage of the system is that it continuously monitors the level of the LPG
present in the cylinder using load sensor and if the gas level reaches below the threshold limit

IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

of gas so that the user can replace the old cylinder with new in time and books the cylinder
by automatically send a notification to the gas agency. An added feature is that if the users
accidently forget to turn off the gas burner, the system will inform by activating an alarm. so
the problem of wastage of the energy is solved.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering, AIET 4

CHAPTER 2

RELATED WORK
Various models have already been designed to meet our requirement. All of them have their
own advantages and disadvantages.

In the proposed system we have designed “IOT based Smart Gas Monitoring
System”. This proposed system aims to detect the economic fuels like petroleum, liquid
petroleum gas, alcohol etc. and allows a provision for controlling the gas leakage by closing
the valve automatically. The next feature of the topic is to ensure the booking of gas cylinder
from gas agency. For both the functioning the sensors detect the leaked gas from the sensor
and send it to the internet .by programming on the internet, the sensed signal is directed to
the android app by using the android app we give the signal for switching off gas valve from
distant place. So, it redirects again to the internet and close the gas cylinder valve through
IOT. The problem of gas wastage could also be avoided using this system. Sometimes if the
burner is left on by mistake, the consumer could be alerted about the problem. If the burner is
on and there is no vessel on top of it, an alarm goes off.

• ARM Processor
This system detects gas leakage by using gas sensor. On the detection of gas leakage,
alarm system is activated, power supply will be turned off and SMS will be sent to
the user to notify about leakage. Load cell will continuously monitor weight of gas in
cylinder and if its weights reach below threshold value of around 2kg, SMS will be
sent to user to refill the cylinder. The main advantage of this system is it detects gas
leakage by using Gas Leakage and Temperature Sensor . The paper has been
implemented by the help of ARM 7 processor and simulated by using Keil software.
Its disadvantage includes that the system makes use of processor instead of controller.

• WIFI Module
This system detects gas leakage and gas wastage by using MQ-2 Sensor and
GP2D120 Sensor. Load cell measures weight of gas in cylinder. User is notified
about leakage of gas and fire in kitchen along with action required to replace gas
cylinder through an SMS. In addition to this, buzzer will start beeping. It makes use
IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

of WIFI module to give microcontroller an access to WIFI network. This paper is

designed and implemented by using Arduino UNO ATMega328 and simulated by
using Proteus Design Suite.

• AT89s52 MCU
This system detects gas leakage by using gas sensor and monitors temperature of
surrounding by using temperature sensor. Load Cell facilitates automatic booking of
gas cylinder. Siren is triggered when gas leakage and fire is detected. The result of
different sensors can be displayed in LCD Display. This paper is designed and
implemented by using AT89s52 MCU.

CHAPTER 3

Background on Environmental Gases

Some gases are the key to ensure the functionality of systems and entire industries, as well as
the presence of other gases being a problem in other fields, causing the loss of entire
production lines, as in the food industry, or even cause the loss of lives and explosions. In
this section, the most important gases in terms of pollution monitoring and control, health
issues, and accident prevention are listed with their main characteristics.

• Oxygen (O2)
It is the most important gas for life, and is crucial in numerous fields. Patients under
anesthesia, or recovering from surgery and from certain diseases need controlled O2
doses to keep them alive and fully recovered. The decrease of oxygen levels in
enclosed spaces can be related with other gases leakage, which would lead people
inside these spaces to asphyxiate, leading to an unconscious state, or even to death.
Numerous industrial processes rely on the correct concentration of this gas to achieve
the best results, mainly chemical and combustion, which without the correct
percentages will not grant the best performance of systems. Engine control systems
depend on the correct mixture to achieve the expected performances, whether it is
lower fuel consumption or power and speed.

• Carbon dioxide (CO2)

it is a colorless, odorless gas, generated by the oxidation and combustion of
hydrocarbon, as well as by living beings in the respiration process. It is a key gas for
the greenhouse effect, and the increase of its levels, in the presence of other gases, is
related with atmospheric pollution. It is also the key gas on the oxygen production by
the photosynthesis process. The accumulation of this gas in enclosed spaces can be
responsible to suffocation; it can be deathly when the concentration of CO2 reaches
levels above 3%.

• Carbon monoxide (CO)

It is a result of the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon fuels, due to the lack of
oxygen or insufficient temperature. It is an odorless, colorless gas, mainly originating
IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces, such as closed parking garages, home heaters

and fireplaces. It is well known that this gas has around 200 times more affinity to
hemoglobin than oxygen, making the protein unable to carry the second gas to the
body cells, leading to hypoxia, causing damage to body tissue. The poisoning
symptoms are easily mistaken with fatigue. Depending on the exposition time and
concentrations of this gas, it can be lethal or reduce lifetime, causing cardiovascular
diseases and brain damage.

• Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

This are carbon-based organic compounds, in a vapor state at room temperature,
generated by the combustion of fossil fuels, or natural emissions, where some
compounds are toxic, affecting human health by causing irritation of the respiratory
system and eyes, diseases as cardiovascular and respiratory malfunctions, or even
cancer.

• Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)

It is a fossil fuel composed of a mixture of hydrocarbon gases, used in domestic
situations and industry, to generate electricity, power heating systems, vehicular
combustible and cooking. It is a highly flammable gas, capable of severe damage if a
leakage is followed by an ignition; major explosions and fire incidents were reported
in the literature, due to its gas leakage, in numerous countries, such as the 2011
Karakopru incident, where an entity plant was destroyed due to an explosion. The
leakage of this gas can lead to great expense and the loss of many lives.

• Ozone (O3)
It is present at the atmosphere, in high altitudes, where it is fundamental to
maintaining life on Earth, acting as a natural filter to ultra violet (UV) light emitted
by the Sun, avoiding skin cancer on humans and allowing the agriculture, by filtering
the UVc light. The increase of this gas in lower atmospheric layers is an indicator of
air pollution and bad air quality, being one of the causes of lung dysfunctions,
worsen respiratory diseases.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering, AIET 8

IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

• Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)

is an odorless, colorless, chemically stable, non-flammable gas used as electrical
isolator in the electrical power industry, due to its capability of extinguishes electrical
arcs in high tension. It is a non-toxic greenhouse gas, and it is not a risk if inhaled in
proportions under 20%. The detection of this gas leakage is essential to prevent
damage to high-power electrical equipment, and with that, avoiding failures on
power distribution; the detection can be done by the SF6 itself or their sub-products,
generated by electrical discharges.

• Radon (Rn)
It is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that can be emitted from soil and rocks like
granite and its long-term exposition is related to lung cancer. It can be generated
from the decay of radium (Ra) and uranium (U), and it has a half-life from
approximately 3.8 days. Radon can be transported through water, or carrier gases
such as CO2, methane (CH4), Helium (He), and other gases. As this gas represent
half of the radiation exposure to human beings, detection is crucial to avoid long term
exposition, being a key factor in lung cancer prevention, mainly in underground
miners, that suffer more contact with this radioactive gas.

• Ammonia (NH3)
It is an irritant, corrosive, colorless gas, with a strong odor, employed in the
production of fertilizers and explosives, as well as in the textile industry. It can be
found as a refrigerant gas and in hygienic products. Its leakage can cause
atmospheric, soil and water pollution, and severe damages to the eyes and respiratory
system, causing even the death of people directly affected by the gas escape.

• Nitric oxide (NO)

It is a colorless gas that can be lethal if its concentrations reach certain ambient
levels. In the atmosphere, it is one of the compounds responsible to the smog
pollution, causing irritation to exposed people. It is employed in the semiconductor
industry, as well as on medicine, as muscular relaxant and in the treatment of

IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

hypertension, due to its vasodilation property. This gas can be one of the sub-
products of fossil fuel combustion, and it is also produced naturally, by the human
body, being an important signal of inflammation if its concentration in human breath
reaches levels above 50 parts per billion (ppb); it is used to monitor the inflammation
conditions of asthma patients’ lungs. The oxidation of NO results in nitrogen dioxide
(NO2).

• Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)

It is a result of the combustion process of fossil fuels, as well as the oxidation of
nitrogen. It is one of the pollutants responsible for the formation of acid rain, and it is
toxic at low levels, 1 part per million (ppm) is the maximum recommended contact
volume; its exposure is related with respiratory diseases, pulmonary malfunction and
death. NO2 can be found in highway surroundings, as well as dense traffic areas; it
can also be found indoors, as a result of the combustion of generators and heaters.

• Hydrogen sulphide (H2S)

It is a colorless, flammable, corrosive and toxic gas, which is poisonous even in low
concentrations. Exposure to this gas can lead to damage to the human nervous
system. Its generation can be either natural, from volcanic activities or from the
decomposition of organic compounds, or due to the combustion of fossil fuels or
from sewage. This gas can be found in coal mines, petroleum exploration and in
diverse industrial processes.

• Chlorine (Cl2)
It is broadly used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, water treatment and
in domestic cleaning products. With a strong odor, in the gaseous state, it is
extremely toxic; the exposure limit in workplaces is around 30 ppb. The inhalation of
low concentration levels (50 ppm) of Cl2 can cause severe damage to the respiratory
system and levels of 1000 ppm are enough to be fatal to humans. Numerous
accidents involving transportation and industrial leakages have been reported over

Department of Computer Science and Engineering, AIET 10

IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

the years. Moreover, it has been used as chemical warfare agent from the First World
War, to the Syrian Civil War in the present days .

• Refrigerant gases:
Temperature control is vital in certain areas, like the food industry, hospitals and data
centers. Refrigerators and air conditioning systems rely on refrigerant gases to
accelerate the thermal exchange and keep the ambient on the adequate temperature .
Not only can the malfunctioning of entire systems be caused by the leakage of
refrigerant gases, but they can cause the increase of atmospheric pollution, the
greenhouse effect and the destruction of the ozone layer. The first generation of
refrigerant gases was composed of toxic and flammable gases, endangering workers
that could be exposed to leakages. After that, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs),
hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydro-fluorocarbons (HFCs) were
introduced; the last do not affect the ozone layer, by contrast with the first two.

Monitoring and controlling the level of these gases can grant better work
conditions, reduce pollution levels, enhance life quality, decrease health disorders
and death in the limit, and prevent equipment malfunction on industry. This section
presented a background on the most relevant gases that are considered in the study.

CHAPTER 4

PROPOSED METHODOLOGY
In the proposed system, Gas Sensor (MQ2 Sensor), Load Cell and Fire Sensor are
interfaced to the microcontroller ATMEGA328. These sensors act as input to the system.
The interfaced GSM module is capable of connecting to Internet through mobile data
network. Gas Sensor detects gas leakage. As soon as leakage of gas is detected, user is
notified about it so that he/she can turn off the gas valve. Load cell continuously monitors
the weight of gas in cylinder and on detection of its weight below some critical value, a
notification will be sent to booking agency and house owner to book a gas cylinder. Fire
sensor detects fire and on detection of fire, buzzer starts beeping to alert user about the
mishap going on in their home. The response of all these sensors can be viewed in LCD-
Display. APR33A3 voice module is used to record alert voice message and it is interfaced
with the GSM Module so that the recorded voice is played when a user attends the call.
GSM Module makes use of AT commands for sending phone calls and SMS.

Figure 4.1 Block Diagram for the system

IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The proposed method takes an automatic control action upon detection of gas. The
regulator valve (motor) would be switched off which completely stops the flow of gas
leakage. Initially if there is a gas leakage then the electronic sensor i.e., the gas sensor that
obeys the principle of LPG sensor senses any gas leakage from storage, if any leakage
sensed then the output of this sensor goes high. This high signal is monitored by the
microcontroller and it will identify the gas leakage. If there is a leakage, the consumer is
informed through internet in his device and a signal is sent back to the microcontroller to
turn off the valve. In this system, a sensor(load cell) is used to monitor the weight of the
gas cylinder ,if it goes below a critical value the sensor senses this condition and sends a
notification via internet to gas agency for booking a LPG. The object detection sensor is
used to detect the presence of any vessel over the burner. If a vessel is not detected over a
predetermined time, then an alarm goes off and the consumer is alerted.

CHAPTER 5

COMPONENTS DESCRIPTION

• MQ-2 Sensor
MQ-2 Gas Sensor is a gas sensor having high sensitivity to LPG, Propane and
hydrogen. That's why, it is most widely used for the purpose of gas leakage
detection. Potentiometer can be used to adjust its sensitivity. The main features of
MQ-2 Sensor are that having high sensitivity and fast response time, measurements
can be taken as soon as possible. It is capable of detecting natural gas concentrations
in the range of 300-1000ppm.

Figure 5.1 MQ2 Sensor

A gas detector is a device that detects the presence of gases in an area, often
as part of a safety system. Gas Sensor (MQ2) module is useful for gas leakage
detection (in home and industry). It is suitable for detecting H2, LPG, CH4, CO,
Alcohol, Smoke or Propane. Due to its high sensitivity and fast response time,
measurements can be taken as soon as possible. The sensitivity of the sensor can be
adjusted by using the potentiometer.

• Fire Sensor
Fire sensor is the device used to detect presence of flame or fire in the area where it
is placed. Immediately after an area has been caught with fire, there will be
significant increase in temperature of surrounding area and concentration of carbon-
IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

dioxide and carbon monoxide increases in the atmosphere. User can then cause
several actions to happen based on their requirement by interfacing it to several other
components. A buzzer can be made to beep on detection of fire. Similarly, a fuel
line can be made to deactivate and fire suppression system can also be activated.

Figure 5.2 Fire Sensor

• Load Cell
Load cell is a type of transducer that converts mechanical force into a measurable
electrical output. Anything that needs to be weighted probably uses it for that
purpose. Among the various varieties of load cells, strain gauge-based load cells are
mostly used. It works on the principle that the strain gauge deforms when the
material of the load cells deforms appropriately.

Figure 5.3 Load Cell

Department of Computer Science and Engineering, AIET 15

IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

It is available in different shapes and sizes. Appropriate one among them can be
selected and added to different machinery and weighing equipment. The major
features of load cell include its stiffness, good resonance values and tending to have
long life cycles in application.
Strain gauge load cells are the most common in industry. These load cells
are particularly stiff, have very good resonance values, and tend to have long life
cycles in application. Strain gauge load cells work on the principle that the strain
gauge (a planar resistor) deforms/stretches/contracts when the material of the load
cells deforms appropriately. These values are extremely small and are relational to
the stress and/or strain that the material load cell is undergoing at the time. The
change in resistance of the strain gauge provides an electrical value change that is
calibrated to the load placed on the load cell.

• Arduino UNO
The Arduino UNO is a microcontroller board which is based on the Microchip
ATmega328P microprocessor. This board consists of 14 digital pins and 4 analog
pins. It can be programmed with the Arduino IDE by means of a type B USB cable.
It is operated at the voltage of 12V.

IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The Arduino Uno is an open-source microcontroller board based on

the Microchip ATmega328P microcontroller and developed by Arduino.cc. The
board is equipped with sets of digital and analog input/output (I/O) pins that may be
interfaced to various expansion boards (shields) and other circuits.[1] The board has
14 digital I/O pins (six capable of PWM output), 6 analog I/O pins, and is
programmable with the Arduino IDE (Integrated Development Environment), via a
type B USB cable. It can be powered by the USB cable or by an external 9-volt
battery, though it accepts voltages between 7 and 20 volts. It is similar to
the Arduino Nano and Leonardo. The hardware reference design is distributed
under a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 2.5 license and is available on
the Arduino website. Layout and production files for some versions of the hardware
are also available.

• SIM900A GSM Module

In this project, GSM module is interfaced with Arduino UNO which is capable of
connecting to Internet through mobile data network. It is able to communicate with
controllers by use of AT commands.

A SIM can be inserted into it allowing the features such as making phone
calls and sending SMS. The major features of GSM module include international
roaming, improved spectral efficiency, uses encryption to make phone calls more
secure, speech with high quality and compatibility with ISDN (Integrated Services
Digital Network).

• APR33A3 Voice Module

APR33A3 voice module allows us to record the voice and playback voice
recorded in it. It has 8 channels, named as M0 to M1, with 1.3 minutes of recording
time for each channel i.e., the total recording time offered is 11 min. It does not
require battery backup to operate. It makes use of non-volatile flash memory
technology. Voice can be recorded with the help of on-board microphone. In this
project, voice module is used to record alert messages and these messages are played
whenever user receives call that is made through GSM Module.

• Buzzer
Buzzer, often called as beeper, is an audio signaling device that may be either
mechanical, electromechanical, or piezoelectric. It makes use of transistor and
capacitor to convert electrical energy into sound energy. The most popular
applications of buzzer include alarm devices, timers, and confirmation of user input
(for e.g., mouse click or keystroke). It starts beeping when some action has been
performed. (Ex: In our proposed topic, the buzzer starts beeping when no vessel is
detected over gas burner even after specified time period).

Figure 5.7 Buzzer

• LCD Display
A liquid-crystal display (LCD) is a flat-panel display or other electronically
modulated optical device that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid
crystals combined with polarizers. Liquid crystals do not emit light directly, instead
using a backlight or reflector to produce images in color or monochrome. LCDs are
available to display arbitrary images (as in a general-purpose computer display) or
fixed images with low information content, which can be displayed or hidden, such
as preset words, digits, and seven-segment displays, as in a digital clock. They use
the same basic technology, except that arbitrary images are made from a matrix of
small pixels, while other displays have larger elements. LCDs can either be normally
on (positive) or off (negative), depending on the polarizer arrangement.

For example, a character positive LCD with a backlight will have black lettering on
a background that is the color of the backlight, and a character negative LCD will
have a black background with the letters being of the same color as the backlight.
Optical filters are added to white on blue LCDs to give them their characteristic
appearance.

SYSTEM FLOW CHART

When we turn on the power supply, MQ2 Sensor reads gas concentration value. Fire Sensor
will detect if the surrounding area has been caught with fire. Load cell will continuously
monitor weight of gas in cylinder. Immediate actions such as sending SMS and phone call

CHAPTER 8

APPLICATIONS
1. Safe Detection

Power plants, pipelines, and factories contain elements that can cause short and long-term
health problems if workers are exposed to them improperly. With portable gas detectors,
you'll be able to find results quickly before any leaks can occur.

Most portable detectors operate through a wireless system, which allows them to check
for gases remotely. This means that you can figure out the level of gases in certain areas
from a safe distance.

This also means that workers can monitor confined areas that could be more sensitive to
issues and provide less freedom to move around and hit the wrong object. You can have
your team check on gas levels from outside, and even from several yards away without
having to sacrifice results.

2. Fast and Reliable Portable Gas Detection

Another thing you have to worry about when it comes to figuring out how many and what
kind of gases are in the area is reliability. When it comes to portable devices, that is not an
issue.

With a personal gas monitor, you can figure out what kind of gases are in the location of
interest, and whether they are toxic or inflammatory. You will be able to find answers
within minutes, which can save time on figuring out what equipment you need in the area.

Whether or not your working area is closer to urban or rural locations may affect what
kind of gases you'll interact with. We advise deciding which detectors can work in which
environments, and which ones can help in both.

3. Easy Use

The easier time you have with the equipment needed for power plants, mining fields, and
other harsh environments, the better use you'll make of them. Portable gas detection has
you covered in this area.
IOT BASED SMART GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

One reason why using detectors is a piece of cake is because of their size. They are light
enough to hold in one hand and put in your pocket, or even clip on to a belt that is holding
other tools you need to fix something.

Alarm levels are also included so that you know when right away when you're in a spot
with high levels. Most detectors can also be turned on and off with the click of a single
button.

4. Saving Money

While safety and efficiency should be your main priorities when working with gases, it's
important to find opportunities to avoid extra costs. Gas detection monitors provide this
opportunity, which can lead to a better future for your business.

Finding out when you need a wireless connection will help you determine when to hire
electricians and other professionals. You will also not need to use extra monitoring tools,
which will help you save money on equipment when working in certain locations.

With portable gas detection, you can also save time on installing power sources and
connections. This gives you more time to accomplish tasks for other projects, which can
lead to more money if they are successful.

5. Convenience For Whole Staff

Certain equipment is designed to reduce the number of eyes on each assignment so that
more tasks can get done in a shorter amount of time. Gas detectors are a prime example,
especially those that you can carry around with you to different locations.

CONCLUSION
As the use of LPG gas is increasing day-by-day, the risk of its leakage and damages
caused by this leakage is also increasing in same ratio. Smart Gas Management system
monitors leakage and fire. In either case, alert message and call will be sent to the house
owner so that he/she can turn off gas valve on time before much damages are caused by
leakage. It also sends notification to gas cylinder booking agency and user in case it is
found that the weight of gas in cylinder reaches below threshold value. The result of every
module can be viewed in LCD display. Buzzer starts beeping if leakage or wastage of gas
has been detected. Thus, the damages caused due to gas leakage can be minimized by use
of IOT based Smart Gas Management System.

I. INTRODUCTION
LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas), simply called as propane
or butane, is highly flammable gas that is often used as fuel for
cooking purposes. Due to the flammable nature of LPG, its
leakage can cause damage to life and property. It is very

B. WIFI MODULE
This system detects gas leakage and gas wastage by using
MQ-2 Sensor and GP2D120 Sensor. Load cell measures
weight of gas in cylinder. User is notified about leakage of gas
and fire in kitchen along with action required to replace gas
cylinder through an SMS. In addition to this, buzzer will start
beeping. It makes use of WIFI module to give microcontroller
an access to WIFI network [1]. This paper is designed and
implemented by using Arduino UNO ATMega328 and
simulated by using Proteus Design Suite.

C. AT89s52 MCU
This system detects gas leakage by using gas sensor and
monitors temperature of surrounding by using temperature
sensor. Load Cell facilitates automatic booking of gas
cylinder. Siren is triggered when gas leakage and fire is
detected [4]. The result of different sensors can be displayed in Fig. 2. Block Diagram for the system

III. PROPOSED METHODOLOGY
In the proposed system, Gas Sensor (MQ2 Sensor),
Load Cell and Fire Sensor are interfaced to the microcontroller
ATMEGA328. These sensors act as input to the system. The
interfaced GSM module is capable of connecting to Internet
through mobile data network. Gas Sensor detects gas leakage.

e) SIM900A GSM Module

Fire sensor is the device used to detect presence of
flame or fire in the area where it is placed. Immediately after
an area has been caught with fire, there will be significant
increase in temperature of surrounding area and concentration
of carbon-dioxide and carbon monoxide increases in the
atmosphere [7]. User can then cause several actions to happen
based on their requirement by interfacing it to several other
components. A buzzer can be made to beep on detection of
fire. Similarly, a fuel line can be made to deactivate and fire
suppression system can also be activated.

c) Load Cell
Fig. 7. SIM900A GSM Module

In this project, GSM module is interfaced with

Arduino UNO which is capable of connecting to Internet
through mobile data network. It is able to communicate with
controllers by use of AT commands. A SIM can be inserted
into it allowing the features such as making phone calls and
sending SMS [10]. The major features of GSM module
include international roaming, improved spectral efficiency,
uses encryption to make phone calls more secure, speech with
high quality and compatibility with ISDN (Integrated Services

Load cell is a type of transducer that converts f) APR33A3 Voice Module
mechanical force into a measurable electrical output. Anything
that needs to be weighted probably uses it for that purpose.
Among the various varieties of load cells, strain gauge-based
load cells are mostly used [8]. It works on the principle that
the strain gauge deforms when the material of the load cells
deforms appropriately. It is available in different shapes and
sizes. Appropriate one among them can be selected and added
to different machinery and weighing equipment. The major
features of load cell include its stiffness, good resonance
values and tending to have long life cycles in application.

d) Arduino UNO
Fig. 8. APR33A3 Voice Module

APR33A3 voice module allows us to record the voice

and playback voice recorded in it. It has 8 channels, named as
M0 to M1, with 1.3 minutes of recording time for each
channel i.e. the total recording time offered is 11 min [11]. It
does not require battery backup to operate. It makes use of
non-volatile flash memory technology. Voice can be recorded
with the help of on-board microphone. In this project, voice
module is used to record alert messages and these messages
are played whenever user receives call that is made through
Fig. 6. Arduino UNO GSM Module.

The Arduino UNO is a microcontroller board which

is based on the Microchip ATmega328P microprocessor. This
board consists of 14 digital pins and 4 analog pins. It can be
programmed with the Arduino IDE by means of a type B USB
cable [9]. It is operated at the voltage of 12V.

Fig. 9. Buzzer

Buzzer, often called as beeper, is an audio signaling

device that may be either mechanical, electromechanical, or
piezoelectric. It makes use of transistor and capacitor to
convert electrical energy into sound energy [12]. The most
popular applications of buzzer include alarm devices, timers,
and confirmation of user input (for e.g. mouse click or
keystroke). It starts beeping when some action has been
performed. (Ex: In our proposed topic, the buzzer starts
beeping when no vessel is detected over gas burner even after
specified time period).
