found in ControlNet and DeviceNet communication networks.
As a high performance, passive multi-master bus, ControlBus serves as a conduit for
passing packets of information among any or all modules in the chassis. This eliminates the need
for a controller or arbiter to act as a backplane master, and enables the following features:

• Bridging of networks without the need for a programmable controller.

• Placement of any combination, arrangement or quantity of controller, I/O, or communication

modules within the slots provided in the chassis.

• Removal and insertion of any module under power (RIUP) without disruption to other modules
in the system, making it possible to service a failed module while the rest of the system continues
to run.

system, the Logix5550 controller, is a
highly functional industrial processor that
provides an easy-to-use, modular, and
flexible solution across a wide range of
applications.
In one application after another,
the Logix5550 controller proves to be the
highest performing controller available.
The reason? This powerful controller takes
a distributed approach to control that
unburdens it from the overhead associated

processor to meet your needs.

Easy-to-Use Symbolic Addressing

• Names fit function. Symbolic, IEC 1131-3 compliant addressing allows you to name your
data based on its use in an application.

• Symbols integrated with code. The symbol names you create are loaded into the con-
troller's memory, making it easy for other controllers or operator interface units to read the con-
troller's data without having to know physical memory locations.

• Self-documenting system. The 40-character symbol name allows you to develop self-doc-
umenting code, making maintenance and training easier to accomplish and at a reduced cost.

• Instruction set. Based on IEC 1131-3, the Logix5550 controller's instruction set maintains the
common look-and-feel of existing Allen-Bradley products. This allows you to take full advantage of
your existing programming skills.

• Software independence . The symbolic

ControlLogix software architecture offers a programming
environment that is highly independent of system's hard-
ware. As a result, you can create software modules with-
out having to know the location of I/O points or memory
variables. This separation of software from hardware
enables you to create libraries of standard routines and
functions that can be re-used on multiple machines or
applications.

The Logix5550 controller offers highly integrated motion control.

Simply insert standard motion instructions within the controller's
ladder diagram program. As a result, you have only one software
tool to learn and one program to maintain for both motion and
sequential control. The controller provides all of the communica-
tion and path information needed to integrate multiple motion axes
into a single cohesive system.
1756-1.3 CLogix 2 test 11/19/99 11:56 AM Page 9

Modularity
• Operating system. The IEC-1131 compliant operating system provides a true preemptive
multi-tasking environment. This allows you to turn your application into software components
scheduled individually. This increases the efficiency of the controller and saves money by reducing
the number of controllers needed for your overall control system.

• Memory. The Logix5550 controller provides modular memory to allow you to tailor the proces-
sor to match your specific needs. In its base configuration, the Logix5550 controller's 160Kbyte
memory provides a low-cost solution for small distributed applications. By adding one of three high-
speed battery-backed static memory boards, you can increase memory size to fit larger applications.
User-installed memory boards range from 512Kbyte to 2Mbyte, making the Logix5550 controller a
scalable solution for today's data intensive needs.

• Networking. The ControlLogix architecture was designed with communications at its core.
The separate network modules allow you to match the Logix5550 controller with your network, or
networks, of choice. Additionally, multiple Logix5550 controllers can share network modules, help-
ing to reduce your system costs.

provides even more flexibility when adding future capabilities or further segmenting
your application.

Flexibility
• Without the need to write code, data within a Logix5550 controller is produced like I/O
and shared with other controllers in your system to provide real time data exchange for
reduced development and startup costs.

• The application development environment allows you to segment your code into isolated
programs with their own local data space. This allows you to create virtual machines oper-
ating independently within the same controller that you can easily add or subtract as your
system changes. Also, productivity is increased because programs can be reused without
renaming variables.

• An RS-232 port on the front of the Logix5550 controller both acts as a local programming
port and also provides full backplane communications bridging, thereby serving as your entry
into the entire control system. Through this serial port your computer passes messages onto
the backplane and to any system network.

The ControlLogix platform,

together with the RSLogix 5000
programming package, establishes
a programming environment that
enhances productivity, offers ease
of maintenance, provides common
system tools, and offers stability
across a range of applications.

Enhance Your Programming Productivity

RSLogix 5000 software for the ControlLogix platform:

• Provides convenient drag-and-drop editing and navigation.

• Enables you to develop programs using a relaxed editor for modifying multiple rungs
of logic simultaneously.

• Allows you to enter logic with either a point-and-click interface or via the keyboard.

• Makes possible the reuse of existing PLC-5 or SLC 500 applications by direct cut-and-
paste or by means of the built-in program translation utility.

Programming logic is also highly reusable because of full symbolic addressing

and local/global data scoping. And the same powerful instruction set you may already
use for your PLC and SLC controllers are found here to reduce the learning curve as you
begin to develop applications for the Logix5550 controller.

RSLogix 5000 now includes the RSWho browsing tool.

Search and replace reduces program development, debug

and run-time maintenance of systems by allowing you to
search for characters that are part of tag names, tag descrip-
tions, instructions, rung descriptions and ladder diagram
logic edit zones, and replace text strings with new strings.

Create Sophisticated
But Easy-to-Maintain Applications
The programming environment offers significant advancements
in the ease of maintaining sophisticated control applications:

• The Logix5550 environment is depicted in an easily understood

tree representation that allows an application to be broken down
into small, easily understood parts while the overall organization
is maintained.

• Tasks allow engineering to be approached in a structured manner, with

multiple engineers developing programs simultaneously. Within the con-
troller's memory, a single application can be segmented in up to 32 tasks
(continuous or periodic), with each task containing multiple programs.

• Tag aliases allow you to create reusable modules of programming.

Each time you insert the module you simply associate it with I/O and sys-
tem data using aliases. Because each program has its own data space,
there are no conflicts with variable names of other programs.

Apply Common Tools Across the System

The programming environment offers communication and integration
capabilities that widen the range of applications for the system:

The ControlLogix platform takes a new approach to integrating motion and sequential
control. ControlLogix performs these functions within a single controller, while other control
systems require multiple controllers and programming packages. The ControlLogix system achieves
this by embedding motion control functions in RSLogix 5000 programming software and the
Logix5550 controller. The ControlLogix approach results in faster application development and
integration, higher system performance, and greater ease of start-up and maintenance.

Distributed Processing Heightens System Performance and Integration

ControlLogix employs synchronized, distributed processing to provide a motion solution
offering heightened performance and integration. The Logix5550 controller executes ladder-based
motion commands and a motion trajectory planner while the 2-Axis Servo module executes a fine
planner and closes a position and velocity loop. Benefits of the approach include:

• Common execution of motion and sequential commands on the Logix5550 controller for complete
synchronization of sequential and motion control

• Fast 200 microsecond fine planner, position loop and velocity loop closure for all axes in a
ControlLogix chassis to provide precise motor position and velocity control

• Modular processing, including the ability to add Logix5550 controllers to the ControlLogix chassis,
for additional processing power as needed

• Support for Servo, Position only, Consumed, and Virtual axis types
