Computer Networks FinalTerm (Theory) 6D - Spring 2021

The document is a final exam for a Computer Networks course consisting of 5 questions testing students' knowledge of networking concepts and protocols based on the OSI model. It provides instructions for students to thoughtfully answer the questions in their own words, submit on time, and include their details. The questions cover: [1] layers of the OSI model and network communication protocols; [2] functions of routers, gateways, switches and transmission impairments; [3] drawing a protocol layer diagram for a small network; [4] identifying an ICMP message and network/broadcast addresses; [5] properties of ARP packets and drawing an autonomous system network diagram.

 Good Luck 😊

Answer the following questions.

Question # 01 (1+2+1= 4 )
a) Which layer(s) of OSI model provides the service of manipulation, presentation and
communication with the user?
b) In case of networked computers that do not share memory, peripheral devices, or a
clock, how the operating system manages communications between these computers?
c) What is the role of protocols in computer network, state examples in each?

Question # 02 (2 x 2 = 4)
a) Suppose you are going to transmit a packet over OSI Network Model. Explain the
working of Router, Gateway and Switch. Which device will be used if you face an
issue of weak signals during transmission? Also, Mention on which level of OSI
model these devices will work efficiently.
b) Attenuation, Distortion and Noise are the causes of Transmission impairment. What
would be the solution or how these causes can be improved.

Question # 03 (5)
a. Given Figure shows a small-scale network comprising one switch and one router. A
personal computer is connected to the switch and a server is connected to the router.
For this network, consider data being sent from the personal computer to the server
and draw a protocol layer diagram that clearly shows which layers of the OSI
Reference Model would be used within the personal computer, switch, router and
server.

Question # 04 (2 x 5 = 10)

a. A router receives an IPv4 packet with source IP address 130.45.3.3 and destination IP address
201.23.4.6. The router cannot find the destination IP address in its routing table. Which ICMPv4
message should be sent?
b. In a block of addresses, we know the IP address of one host is 25.34.12.56/18. What are
the first address (network address) and the last address (limited broadcast address) in this
block?

Question # 05 (2 + 5 = 7)

a. Is the size of the ARP packet fixed? Explain

b. Show the autonomous system with the following specifications:
a) There are eight networks (Nl to N8).
b) There are eight routers (Rl to R8).
c) Nl, N2, N3, N4, NS, and N6 are Ethernet LANs.
d) N7 and N8 are point-to-point WANs.
e) Rl connects Nl and N2.
f) R2 connects Nl and N7.
g) R3 connects N2 and N8.
h) R4 connects N7 and N6.
i) RS connects N6 and N3.
j) R6 connects N6 and N4.
k) R7 connects N6 and NS.
l) R8 connects N8 and N5.
